In this episode, Manny Charlton reminisces about his hometown, how he learned to play guitar and how he ended up with the Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty guitar which he became synonymous with in the Nazareth heyday. Award-winning blues rock band THE FLUFFY JACKETS are back with a new album ‘Something from Nothing‘ and a 2 hours documentary film featuring Manny Charlton (Nazareth) and as special guest Neil Murray (Whitesnake).
The nine new tracks on ‘Something from Nothing‘ are “all killer, no filler”, as the saying goes. Five originals and four covers make up this album, showcasing a tribute to Glen Campbell’s “Better Place” (featuring Alison Cooper) and a new single/music video for “Everything must change”:
The documentary was filmed over a three-year period in Spain, Scotland, England and Norway and shows the band making ‘Something from Nothing‘ with producer Manny Charlton. The two-hour documentary film also highlights THE FLUFFY JACKETS history along with exclusive interviews, live performances and four new music videos. Bonus material include retrospective interviews with special guests Neil Murray (Whitesnake), Manny Charlton (Nazareth) and up-close inspection of guitars and amplifiers including a Gibson Flying V guitar previously used to record the Nazareth albums Play’N the Game (1976) and Expect No Mercy (1977).

Manny told me a story on how the start of that song came about. He said the guys were in a studio recording and they took a break. He put his guitar on a stand..... it was at a slight angle toward an amp. When they came back in, Manny said he kept hearing a very faint waa waa waa. He put headphones on at the mixer and he could still hear it. Then figured it out that it was feedback between the guitar and amp. So he ended up recording that sound. Manny said after all those years, he had never been able to duplicate that sound again

Manny finished his last album with Nazareth “Snakes and Ladders” and left the band in 1990. It was never clear to me what happened and the reason or reasons why he left. It maybe could’ve been creative differences or personal tensions that were building up for years. I do remember an interview from 2006 he said something about he was using the name “Nazareth” with new band members and the management of Nazareth told him to not use that name because he was no longer a member the original lineup. I never heard Pete Agnew, Darrell Sweet and Dan McCafferty say anything about this ever. But about a month ago when Manny died Pete Agnew did release a statement praising and respecting Manny for his work as producer for Nazareth and other projects he worked on. If there was bitterness and animosity after Manny left Nazareth Pete Agnew didn’t hint of it in his statement when he found out Manny had died. And as of now the details of Manny’s death hasn’t been disclosed yet. Manny to me seemed to be a very smart producer and was humble. He was a sweet man. If anyone from the Fluffy Jackets have any unreleased interviews or concert videos of Manny will you make them available for us to enjoy. Much respect…David Page.
