I have felt so much sympathy for Manuel out of all the characters in the movie, he tries his best and works hardest to make a name for himself only for his efforts to be destroyed in vain, Nellie’s dynamic with her family was super creepy.

Nellie nevere loved Manny. Not even for one second. That woman was bad news. She couldn´t even love herself. A tragic figure. A poor sick person, albeit charming, gorgeus, incredibly exciting and fascinating. A sight to behold. But she lacked the depth and the emotional health to be able to love anybody. She almost destroyed Manny. Now, this guy was excellent. Capable, able to work with others and take care of them, with empathy, a very well rounded human being. It is good and deserved for that character to be able to remake his life and get his share of happiness and success.

@@jacksoncrou2050 no, she did not love him. Actually, she was so broken that she didn't even love herself. She eventually destroyed and/or neglected everything and everyone, herself included. As a said, tragic character. There are people like that. And don't think for a moment "well, she loved Manny in her own way". Love is of one essence, albeit the particulars may vary. She used the guy when she needed him. That's all. One (you) may want to feel or think that she loved him because that is the natural expectation that comes with two close main boy-girl characters in a movie. Man, get this: the main lesson of Babylon: Movie Magic was (is?) made possible mostly by sick, broken people. Manny was a good, honest man, and found himself back once he escaped out of that shiny hellhole that is Hollywood/ Babylon.

She wasn't lazily written. Yes, Nellie never loved Manny. It didn't mean she used him the whole time, she treated him as a friend and left him in the end because Nellie knew she wasn't good enough for Manny, that she would just drag him down. She was the sort of person who gave Manny an irreplaceable spark (the way love can for some people) which resulted in the tragic one-sided love. To me, Nellie was a beautiful mess, a wild star with a tragic end who ultimately could not be saved (Gambling, doing drugs was just the way she was) which may have been what the movie was trying to illustrate. She left and died with a sudden, crazy spark which is what some people do, and ultimately became forgotten.
