Not being able to convince many of my artist friends/clients that if they just put in some work at the front end (preproduction), the end result will always be better. The tech these days is great, but it cannot make something mediocre (especially performance and arrangement) as great as they can make it with the work. Trust your passion! The soapbox is now free for the nex ranter. ;)

Great vid, Manny’s great, highly adaptable! Thx for asking, Huart. When I was working a inet/ Indy radio variety show, L.A., ‘06-‘08. I’ve been resistant of using the term ‘Producer’ until it’s actually being done for income. What was really cringey for me, was people with barely a idea, introducing themselves & a biz card, as ‘Producer’. Once the show claimed nearly ~200k listeners all over the world, & I was doing post prod edit audio of the show, I relented on our new biz cards, to be titled a ‘CO-Producer’. I’d as soon preferred a biz card with me cited as ‘CO-Conspirator’, lol! It was the best times I ever had in L.A. 👍

It's so nice to hear what is important from a blue collar guy that knows the difference between practical and fluff. Times are tough right now in music and I feel for everyone. This guy is making it work by staying lean with the overhead. The end product is all that matters. Love the video!

Inspi-fuckin-rational, honest, real and brimming with integrity. I decided a few years back to push into recording bands. I built a mobile rig and bought into a co-op space, I get to use a few days a month, but I can't afford to go it alone without holding down a job, and I'm nowhere close to where I wanted to be, but I love the fact you've been driven by your profound love of your craft, you don't play to the gallery, and you've found realistic ways round your problems. You may have just re-ignited a fire in me. Thank you

I'm 38 years old, been recording music for 25 years now. Went to school for audio production back in the day, worked in a few commercial studios, spent most of my life making DIY punk/hardcore records in basements and garages. Just this month I decided (early midlife crisis?) to go all in on trying to make my home studio my main source of income and survival. I needed this video right now, thanks Manny!

Manny, you are an absolute _gem_ and I'm _SO_ thankful to Warren for putting you on this platform. I have such tremendous respect for you, your work and your process. What you shared today only deepened that already solid base of reverence I have for you. Thank you so much. This was such an inspiration for me and the long, difficult process I'm going through to put together a studio for myself and my passion. In such a short time you've turned me onto mics and outboard gear that is both accessible and exciting. It's been easy to get discouraged and also for my plans to start simple and then somehow I let myself get tricked into them becoming more complicated, which means more expensive, which means more time and difficulty and me being further from getting to what I envisioned in the first place. These videos really help me temper those impulses and make it easier for me to accept what is and not chase some carefully curated facade and make my journey longer and harder with things that, although nice, are not necessary. I have my garage (a large 2 car garage with an open triangle/barn ceiling) available to me if I want to go through with making that my studio but I've been concerned over what it might cost me to get it soundproofed to the point that I can run sessions from say noon to 10PM withput disturbing my family and neighbors (I live in a middle/lower middle class suburb in S.E. Massachusetts). My family and I are a team and thus my overhead is low, so although I don't make crazy money, I'm able to spend a considerable percentage of it on chasing this dream. When you said "I _could_ have hired someone to design and build out this room but it would have cost me $30k..." I couldn't help but wonder if you really think that might be an accurate figure. That's _a lot_ dont get me wrong but its something I could put together with a year, 16 months max of hard work, sacrifice and saving. If I could turn my garage into a studio where I could have thumping drummers and Hiwatt, Orange and Ampeg amps roaring and recording into the night in the comfort of my own home, it would certainly be something worth saving and spending on. I guess I'll really have to look into it further. I.kind of assumed it'd be _waaay_ further out of reach to turn the garage into a studio. Even one that wasn't "pretty" but *WORKS.* Thanks again to you, Warren and everyone else who is apart of both this series and P.L.A.P. as a whole. Its _the_ best recording related channel on KZbin and my favorite overall. Cheers!

Cool Tour Manny! Some really good ideas for someone with a smaller garage studio such as myself. I have the Peavy Amp, need to get the Gorilla those things are sick. Do you have any info on Frontier records in Los Angeles? Some of the best vinyl I have was made at Frontier Records: Circle Jerks, Adolescents, TSOL, Christian Death and Suicidal Tendencies. Thom Wilson seemed to be a great producer and engineer, the vinyl clarity is amazing. If you could do a tour or find out what Frontier records was using in the 80's it should help studios, especially punk studios.

This is an inspiring treatise on the reality of the world we live in today with regards to music production…and this reality check could also be in a subtle way, a preview in what could be even more lean times in the near future. But I’m a believer that if you love something…You will NOT stop but instead find a way. But THANK YOU Manny, Warren... for putting out this episode…as it is needed counseling for those studio owners who need to know there are others out there fighting to do what they love to do. Godbless all of the fighters out there…and may the peace of the Lord guide that journey.

Really nice Manny, thank you for the guided tour. You have some great mics, I’ve seen the other video. And I always wanted MA5’s since 2006 when I started. Great instruments, everything. Killer intro too, of course that jammed. Looking forward to more of your videos. Condolences, I know how you feel when it comes to Dad. ❤

During the pandemic I had to sell my lifetime investment, my studio. Did 200.cds there. Was away for 2 years spending time with my kids working as a teacher. Now im back at it with a mixing room at home with Pro Tools Carbon and my old hardware and I got the bands comming back finally. Every single day I feel gratitude I am able to do this again. Bless your backlash, you will be a better producer and mixer afterwards just by enjoying it more than ever!

Manny, this was a wonderful vid, really hit home for me. Your love of music first and workingman's ethic on gear, plus having what you need to do the job and building what you can and holding on to the "cool toys" of the past is perfect. And you are a human being, which seems to be one of the biggest challenges of our time. And then the trick is to develop skills, build strengths and work on non-strengths. It isn't easy (never has been) to make a living making music, and being practical and well set up is the key to it, in my opinion. At the heart of it is love and respect for the music and the people who make it. The music you record is miles from what I do (Americana & Roots), but everything you said applies perfectly. When I run across people just starting out, my advice is going to be, always remember the love and respect, get what you need rather than what you think you want, and watch Manny's video. Thanks!
