Thank you! The big thing was that back in 2007, it was years before OS support for multitouch, or availability of screens that could do this natively and affordably. I had a lot of fun....

The LEDs shine infrared (invisible) light my fingertips when I touch the plexi glass. The computer / camera sees those "dots", and turns them into touch points in the OS / user interface. Thanks for watching!

This is an awesome project, think it's still expensive to make a large touch monitor using the same materials or even better ones? This could be made to fit a custome workbench or desk!

They are infrared LEDs. Basically, they shine light you don't see, and when your fingers get lit by them, the camera inside the table "sees" them as dots, and a software converts them into mouse / pointers in real time, telling the OS that there's a finger / mouse there. It was all custom stuff but today you can just get Windows 8 and an affordable 27" touch screen such as an ACER, and you get the same but more reliable :)

It was all custom and open source software, back when no OS supported multitouch. Today, Windows 8 supports multitouch natively, and there's tons of games / apps for it. You just plug one of the affordable multitouch screens available today, and you get the same thing :)

5 years ago, I designed and built a functional Multi-Touch computer with a 52" horizontal display area. It was really fun... The best part was building the many prototypes that led to it, playing with lasers, writing a custom UI. This touch screen was (even by today's standard) truly HUGE and immersive. Short video overview below... :-)

Hi there! Well so this was a few years ago, back when there were no multi touch screens available (beyond smart phones), and it cost quite a lot because there is a Short Throw projector, a lot of materials, and many hours. On top of that, no Operating System supported touch, so it was all custom stuff. GOOD NEWS is that today, Windows 8 is touch-first, and that you can buy awesome touch screens for cheap - ACER has nice ones

Oskar Ray-Frayssinet well it was quite strong for a prototype, all poplar wood, strong lap joints, thick lexan screen, etc. Did you mean stronger as in better?

I am looking to do a diy using an iPad lying flat on table and reflect it to two sides opposite each other using two mirrors for playing educational app games for children sitting across from each other but how to flip vertically one mirror to right side up instead of upside? Can you please give me some tips.

Have you seen other people do this? I'm not sure how you will detect people's touch interactions. Would they still touch the iPad, and see pictures reflected elsewhere? I built Energy 10 years ago, not sure. You need to the image to be projected onto a surface as well

Cosmin Barbu hey! This was 10 years ago :) how did you find my video? There was a forum called NUI Group I think, and many of us were sharing our projects while making them. Maybe you will find plans there. Check instructables as well. Today this is pretty much obsolete, because you can buy all-made multitouch PC monitors... I built this touch table before everyone had an iPhone and touch was common. We live in a very different world!

YES! That was a looooong time ago! In 2008, there were no massive, multitouch screens available for PC. The iPhone was in its infancy. It felt quite magical. Oh and so much fun to build and figure it all out! Thanks for the message -mano

okram ovic actually you touch the top layer which is rubbery. It is a back-projection sheet. The panel underneath is Lexan (plastic). This is almost 10 years old!! These days you can just buy a massive multi-touch monitor... Different times! No idea why my video is getting traffic now :) thanks for posting!

+Antoine Ttrmblay tremblay Run a google search on FTIR multitouch display plans. FTIR stands for Frustrated Total Internal Reflection. The basic idea is this: You have IRLEDs running through the glass. When you touch the glass, it makes an IR blob. This IR blob is picked up by a digital camera that has a filter over it preventing anything but IR from being viewed, much like the camera inside of the Wii Remote. In fact, using a Wii Remote as your camera is a great idea because that camera is specifically designed to track IR blobs. Then, you have some kind of a rear projection material on the back of the glass. Something that lets light through properly but isn't transparent. The first such FTIR display actually used tracing paper, actually, but that was for a first prototype. Then you have a projector set up to rear project the image from the computer. Since this is a DIY thing, you will actually need to have some kind of custom made drivers in place to drive the touch screen. NUIgroup likely has the drivers you'll need. They also have plans you can use. However, I don't know if they still exist because it's been years since I built mine.
