The thing is that Adams, unline the majority of heavy metal singers, knows how to sing. That's the difference.

The thing is, the lack of Autotune, Melodyne, Variaudio etc. made it a neccessity. I know that it sounds like it is bad thing that they had to be good, but it is just the sad reality. These tools made it so much easier to achieve good vocals. I can tune every single note of a bad vocal take if i want to. Literally. I can tune one single fucking note, even it is the wrong note . You wouldn't even notice it, i've had people be like "oh he is such a good singer" but no, i just tuned the living shit out of it without them noticing. I feel like that is the major difference between back then and now. A good voice = good vocals, simply because staying in tune doesn't matter anymore. I can extend your voice by quite a bunch of semitones without it sounding too unnatural. It's crazy
