thank u so much! exactly what i needed for my orchid mantis nymph this morning. i was holding her shed with tweezers in one hand and using the other to search for this video lol. have her pinned on the side of her cup (on the inside with proper humidity), hopefully she will continue to slip out! only the smallest bit of her abdomen had been shed so it was a bit difficult. i know she will pull through!

You are very welcome! Molting is one of the most exciting times to watch pet mantises for sure; I'm always excited to be able to capture a time-lapse for people as well, hoping to have more in the future! Thanks

Mine has a really bad molt and I think he cut off some of its new legs and his arm is twisted . U think he will make it ? I hand fed him a cricket and he ate it all but he still doesn’t have the full strength of his new body
@ArthropodAmbassadors4 жыл бұрын
If he can hang upside down for his next molt there is a chance. Keep him fed and hydrated and see if he becomes mobile after a week or so. I have one spiny that lost parts of four limbs when she molted during shipping, and was barely able to get thru the next molt, but after that did fine

I have an adult mantis I have hand raised since he emerged from the ootheca. He is huge, and now lives in my large front window. He hides in the drapes when he molts. He has emerged a few minutes ago. His wings look puckered and strange. I'm not sure if it is four wings, or two, with stuff that still needs to come off. The two puffs highest on his back are a fawn color like the rest of him. The other two puffs just back of that are almost black. Is this a molt gone bad, or is he just not finished? If the blackish parts need to come off, do I help, or wait? Please help me do the right thing. He has gotten so big, he might be able to snatch a small sparrow from midair. I can't bear to let him down. He seems to be feeling a bit impatient.
@ArthropodAmbassadors4 жыл бұрын
Hello, sounds like his wings didn't unfold properly for his final molt, which can happen. Usually they will be that way but not affect his ability to move or eat; if they seem to be a bulky burden I have heard other keepers suggest clipping most of the deformed section of the wing off once they have dried fully, but find that is usually unnecessary and mostly done for aesthetics or breeding purposes. past that they shouldn't affect his life, especially since he has a lovely home helping assure he is well fed. Thanks and good luck! Erin

@@ArthropodAmbassadors thanks! I hope he will breed. My females are from another hatching though, and behind him in development. I'm hoping the size difference will discourage them from decapitating him, at least too soon. 😱

Hi, my L3 mantis molted last night and he’s just laying down on the bottom of his enclosure. He’s moving some, so still alive... is he going to be ok?
@ArthropodAmbassadors4 жыл бұрын
Hello, sorry to hear you are having issues! The first thing I check is if the limbs seem to be straight and correct. If so that is a good sign, if not it depends on their mobility with the issues whether they can make it to the next molt. past that if it is clear of the molt just be sure he isn't pinned by something on the groung, you could also carefully move him to a container with a damp paper towel to maintain its humidity as it hardens and make sure it is in a natural position. If not up after a day or two you could offer the little one some honey water or the inners of a mealworm. Good luck!

I just found out my orchid mantis fell down when it was molting, i used tape to make it upside down again, is it good ? or better not ?
@ArthropodAmbassadors4 жыл бұрын
As long as the tape isn't sticking to the newer skin and it has room to drop downward that could work

is my mantis suppose to be slow and do I need to water him extra??
@ArthropodAmbassadors4 жыл бұрын
Is it adult (does it have wings?) Mantises will get slow before molting, but if adult it may be aging. A mist of water and even a toothpick tip with a drop of honey are always a welcome treat for older mantises.

Today I found my mantis on the bottom of the jar and stuck. It's leg was deformed and one arm seems kinda not working. How to fix it? He walks clumsily now too. Any ideas what to do ?
@ArthropodAmbassadors4 жыл бұрын
Was he mid-shed? If you keep him well fed and safe he may be able to reform those legs during the next molt.

I lost a female last year to a mismolt. I’ve raised mantises when i was a kid but hadn’t done it in a long time. My kids and I found an egg case in the garden, watched it hatch then kept one baby to raise. It was not an exotic mantis but you really get attached. I tried all the tips on the internet but she died. In all the years of raising them that’s the only mismolt i ever had.

@Arthropod Ambassadors Hi My mantis mismolted. His very back legs are not out...He is currently lying down drinking water... Is it okay for him to be lying down?...I don't think there's a way for me to pin him
@ArthropodAmbassadors3 жыл бұрын
They usually hang as they harden for an hour or two after, the larger the mantis the longer the time it takes. Are all 4 back legs still in the old molt? As long as there are enough legs free for it to cling upsidedown for the next molt they do ok.

Hello! I actually have a new video out detailing this issue; I work harvest crew on a farm and spend my days digging potatoes and trimming tomatoes, harvesting kales and strawberry until my hands are stained and callused. Sorry it is a distraction, but they are manual labor stains that don't come out no matter how hard I scrape and scrub, trust me i try very hard before each video because it is such a distraction to viewers that have never seen working hands. each comment like this is slightly painful given my efforts :(
