Nice video. Like you I mount mine to the cement. I use 3/8 drop in anchors so I can remove it when not in use. For inflating the tire and setting the bead I remove the Scrader valve in the stem. I use a basic air chuck with quick connect and remove the center pin that normally pushes on the Schrader pin. I then plug it into the air hose and fill it till it pops on and let the air escape the valve. Replace the Schrader valve and inflate to proper pressure.

Man you made that look easy Mike!!! I'm impressed how well it broke the bead! I recall Manny times using an old arbor press to break them down and couple bars to wrestle off and on, use what you got and do the best you can right, this is step up for sure! You may have mentioned this but keeping the opposing side of the Bead that your prying off or spinning on inside the valley of the rim, makes a world of difference. Keep them coming mike! enjoyed as always

Thanks Mike, I got a harbor freight special too.after installing tyres I needed to take it to the tire shop to seal the bead, I tried using straps,belts and stuff but doesn’t work on 10 ply tyres back in the day bias sidewalls were easy. So to fill not recccomended but use minimal “starter fluid”, inside light spray and ignite make sure you have your soapy stuff on rims and bead and leave tyres out in the sun too soften them for a while before doing so....not safe but it’s easy once you do your first.
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
HAHA! yes I am very familiar with the starting fluid method but did not want to mention it in my video. I had a person do the starting fluid trick in my garage with a motorcycle tire /rim that he was putting one of those 25 MPH donut spare tires on. He almost killed me as the tire flew past me! ahh those were the days!
@JCcanU

I have done the starting fluid and it blowed the sidewall out a few times . used tires never new .
@henryxavier3751
@henryxavier3751 5 жыл бұрын
JCcanU yea it can be very dangerous using starting fluid however if it’s done right with a little practice should work out good. Using a light spray all around the inner center of tire is plenary enuff. Not too much, drop a spark it up with a match stay clear o cue it seals then add air to seal. It work for me that way many times add less not more it’s highly explosive once ignited.⚠️

Don’t forget to use windex on the beed(s) before igniting helps seal tire to rim securely.

I don't use starting fluid, I use carb cleaner. It takes very little inside the bead and works perfectly every time! I like to light the carb cleaner with a propane torch. A little scary the first time, but after doing dozens of tires with beads that won't seat, it's very easy to do.

Tried the HF manual tire changer and it’s too much work. Bought a air/electric tire machine from eBay and it’s hands down the best investment ever. Did a set of ATV tires in short time. Bought the bead blaster unit and it helped seal up the tires quickly.

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic They’ve come down in price quite a bit. Managed to squeeze it in a 1 car garage as they don’t take up much space. Another option is to find a good used machine locally.

I had a 1010 Super Powerman that I bought at an auction many year's ago. Like you, I didn't change enough tires to justify the room it took up ( and I have an 80X40 pole barn!) so I sold it. I bought a Pittsburgh (Harbor Freight) clone at another auction for 30 buck's work's OK on everything but 12 ply skidloader tires but luckily I seldom need to change them out. Made my own mini tire changer for lawn tractor and ATV tires.

Thanks for the tips I purchased one of them some time back, it’s better that nothing but I don’t like it and found a 40/40 old machine it save so much effort, I end up giving away the harbor freight basic tire tool, but I learned on you tube it can be easily modified to be less effort to operate and efficiently for a little money.

I just did 8-lt285/70R17Es (dually plus spare and goof I had to turn around) then again I made a duck mount for mine ($40 in metal plus $13 for the duck head) and used one of those instead of the bar. Took me 4 hours and plenty of ruglyde. The HF tool did fine with them all, it was mostly just learning curve time.... Eventhough the center hole was offset (pin didnt fit in lug hole with the rim centered on tool) the duck mount still worked good.
@busbqbill449

Hey mike. I think if you tried the other end of the bar you might be surprised how much easier and better it is one thing I recommend is a bead lock to hold the tire at drop center while you walk the tire around with the correct side of the bar. also I see you have the tire mount lube but used soap water to mount. try the lube that will help mounting too. forcing the tire on like that without the tire in drop dead center damages plies. you can hear the plies breaking in the video. crunching sound. the best thing I can say is find a used tire machine pneumatic or electric. I picked a pneumatic hunter tire mounted and coats balancer years ago and never looked back from the manual machine. always a thumbs up on your vids. when I used the manual changer I bought a no mar tire bar which is nice too.

here is a tip or two, keep a piece of pipe for a cheater bar, and I keep a tire iron on hand to help, me. I bent the soft harbor freight pole using a cheater bar, you do have to be careful, always! I like to run the bead with rubber cement, it is very slippery and it lubes the tire making it that much easier it install them.

At 5:40 , Good idea removing the valve core from the stem.. Also remove the "chuck" from the hose (if equipped with quick disconnect fitting ) and let the stem push open the hose fitting ... Also "rolling " the tire ,on the floor , about one turn both directions , while pushing down (if necessary ) will usually seal the tire enough to stop incoming air ... For tires on "extra" wide rims , I use a 16 inch bicycle tire (with air ) to seal the gap ,until I get one side wedged tight ...

Great video... did it right? Did it wrong? Tire is on the rim and you have all your fingers..hehe. A set of tire bars goes a long way as well. I have a couple of air chucks one that is a straight chuck that snaps on and the inflated like yours. When I can’t find the straight chuck I use the inflated and have a zip tie that is the right diameter to hold the trigger down and I’m move it on and off when I’m trying to seat the bead. Keep posting!!

I just mounted four 6 ply tires using three 18" tire spoons and was able to do it faster than this without a tire changer. I used wd40 on the rim and tire as lube. I enlisted the help of my wife. The process that makes it easier is you put the initial bead mid rim and then use a spoon on each side. Once you have them flipped up just have your helper grab one spoon so that it doesn't lose the bead and take the third one and grab another bite about 6 inches away from one of the spoons. Then just alternate side to side pulling your farthest spoon and inserting six inch ahead. Slips right on without over stretching the tire. Can mount them on the floor without a tool. However, I don't currently have a way to break the bead to dismount. Three of them I used a 2" car rachet strap and they filled and popped the bead on their own. The first one I forgot about the strap trick and used good old starting fluid. Got to be careful with that one. :^)

Fella you may as well get two off the HF tire levers they sell like the ones used to lever beads over the duck heads on rim clamp machines. That would be an advantage for you using tire irons method to install the tire. Your clip on chuck is known as an open chuck. It doesn't seal so it will fill without the valve core in place. Be well and God Bless Lube is King!
@ludditeneaderthal
@ludditeneaderthal 5 жыл бұрын
You actually make it harder to do than it has to be... Look at the shape of the rim flanges. You have the lip the bead seats against that your levering is rubbing, a flat section at 90 degrees to the lip, then a smaller diameter center section. If you work the tire bead into that center section you minimize how much you have to wrestle in working the remaining bead over the lip (the tire "tucks in", and more tire can move to the lever/lip interface). Go watch how a tech does it at a tire shop, the side opposite the unseating or seating tool is ALWAYS tucked into that smaller diameter center of the flange. You can actually damage the sidewall if you don't.

I worked at a service station in my misspent youth and was taught by the owner to repair/replace split rim tires( I was 15 at the time. OSHA would have hung the boss by his thumbs these day's!) I was told to drop the lift on the wheel before airing it up ( he had a single post ramp type lift) that should work for using the flammable substance of your choice also. Your frame lift might need a vehicle on it before lighting up the juice! Tire cages work well too but take up room in a shop. Luckily I live on a old farm so I could keep one outside but I haven't really needed one yet. I did buy a tank type tire inflator. Work's pretty good and can be used as a portable air tank also.

I've noticed that all of these tire changers say for tires up to 16 inches. I have 18 inch tires (245/60-18) on my ford explorer. Is there a reason why I can't change my 18 inch tires on this machine?
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 4 жыл бұрын
It may be because of the diameter of the table the tire sets on. Not sure. If I get an 18" tire I will try it!

1st off I piss red,white and blue and would never disrespect an actual American flag. That being said,I didn't know a decorative flag with a motorcycle was considered an actual flag!!! I am glad that you at least got something out of this video, even if it was my unintentional desecration of the decorative flag! Love you too bro!

Why don't you use the other end of the bar. It's the remount end of the bar.
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
Because I can do it faster, safer and without tire damage this way. I say what works best for you, with no damage to self or equipment is the way to do it, which is what I do. If you like using the remount end by all means feel free to! Thanks for the comment!

Thanks Mike. Great video. I have another one to do. I have a flat on my other john Deere. I was pushing ice and snow at this time of year and bent a valve stem. Can you believe it, that much snow now!!! I am going to try the 3/4 inch rod in my vice as the hole in the wheel is 3/4. Oh sorry but this is the right link to my video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJDbeKeelpWVq5o

You’re not using that bar correctly. You’re supposed to use it to “persuade” somebody else to change your tire. See how this works? 🤪

If you use the correct end of the bar to get the tire back on it's EASIER! I was with you all the way and then you do that. Not many things more discouraging than someone showing other people how to do something very fundamentally wrong, then saying that's how I do it, not interested in learning the right way. You can pound a nail in with a rock or you can use a hammer. If you use a hammer, hold the handle and hit the nail with the head of the hammer not vise versa. The correct tool only helps if you use it right. Terrible.
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
Well I disagree and feel the way I did works just fine and does not ruin or hurt anything. I guess you think because a tool is for a certain purpose it can not work for any other purpose. I am going to your channel now to see how to do all thingd the CORRECT way!

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic It's a wonder how America survives when otherwise fairly intelligent people would prefer to do something incorrectly and with more effort than learn the right way to use a simple tool. It is of course your right to do it wrong and if you prefer to work harder, the knowledgeable can always use comic relief. Keep pounding those nails with the hammer handle genius.

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic You guess wrong. The way you do it takes way more effort and CAN damage the tire bead easily. I used a manual tire changer everyday when I was still to young to drive, working in a Mobil station back when they had mechanics and sold tires, batteries, did brakes etc. The correct end of the bar slides those tires on with relative ease. That funny looking curly end of the bar wasn't made that way by accident.
