In the UK most people take their test in a manual (passing in an automatic means your license only covers you to drive an automatic - restricting your choice of used cars). Generally people will only take their test in an automatic if they really can't cope with a manual. Because people have learnt to drive in a manual they then generally buy, drive and get used to a manual. I think you very quickly find that you don't even think about changing gear because, as you say, it just becomes an automatic activity. The problem comes when you get into an automatic after years of only driving manuals. The left foot won't keep still, and because automatics seem to have oversized brake pedals, the automatic reflex reaction of the clutch foot can result in some pretty harsh breaking when it accidently catches the brake pedal!

I will not deny that Automatic Transmission can sometimes make your life more convenient, especially when driving uphill through a massive traffic congestion. However, manual transmission really requires you to be more alert. To be more calculating of the gear and of driving. You have better connection to your engine also when driving manual. If your gear is wrong, the engine talks back to you. You have a better overall "feel" how your engine is doing. I always say that driving is both reflex and active thinking. I drive a manual car because not only do I have better control of the machine, It also keeps me mentally alert.

Now I drive a manual 2002 Saab 95 Aero (250hp turbocharged 2.3L I4). I also drive a manual truck, which is very rare in Sweden, where most trucks are automatic/semi-automatic. In the US, I got my first car in 1998 - I couldn't drive a manual, but I refused to even consider buying an automatic. & Yes; taking off from a stop doesn't come immediately for most people, but getting used to it doesn't take long. My second vehicle was a GSXR1 - a bike w a linear manual transmission. Bikes, imo, are the best way to learn a manual because the difficult parts happen with your hands (don't learn on a litre bike though...). For a few years I had two automatic vehicles, but I ditched them in 2006 for a manual & I've never gone back. I've driven plenty of automatics in my day, but by far & away, the vast majority of my driving has been via manual transmission. & In terms of multi-tasking, I would object that it cannot be done with a manual. As I recall on my way to University on several occasions, I would be driving a manual transmission, eating, studying material for an exam, & listening to an audio lecture via my ipod...all at the same time. It worked for me; generally, I'd call it a terrible idea though...(?) I think overall though, "knowing how to drive" requires knowing how to drive a manual transmission. If you can only drive an automatic, I'd say you are still on your journey toward learning how to drive.

Thanks for a balanced presentation of the options. An aspect which could be overlooked is that the automatic transmission (AT) shifts gear under some load, while with the manual transmission, gear changes are done with the load disconnected. This does burden the clutches of an AT more.

Since I was born in 1951 I have seen most of the history of both manual transmission and automatic transmissions during my lifetime. When I was young one of the most common manual transmissions was the three speed column shift or a four speed with a shift lever on the floor in compact cars. Also most automatics were 2 or 3 speed automatics. At the present time what few manual transmissions that still exist are mostly 6 speed manuals. Also automatics today can have 6, or 8, or even 10 speeds with lock up torque converters. Since I live in a big city with a lot of stop and go traffic I prefer automatic transmissions.

In europe automatic transmission are pretty rare and almost everyone knows how to drive manual
@HistoricalWonder7203 жыл бұрын
That's unfortunate. They should become more technologically advanced and drive automatics. I learned a manual and drove it for 7 years in the States but there's really no point when automatic is easier on the driver and much more efficient with modern transmission technology. The whole "Europe is superior because we drive standard" rhetoric is so backwards its laughable. Comparable to a person riding a horse laughing at someone riding in a steam engine. "Haha you have to do less work because your technology is more advanced, so stupid." I've driven both for a decade. They can both be fun, but acting as if a continent is superior to another on the basis of a vehicles less advances transmission is borderline moronic. Acting as if driving a manual transmission is some difficult skill is absurd. Its quite literally simple to operate a manual transmission. I learned at 13 years old. Comfort items in cars evolved differently in different markets. The Hydromatic developed in Detroit in the 40s and 50s quickly became common because US cars offered base models with individual options. You could buy the big ticket option of automatic for +$300 and forgo the clock, tach, better upholstery fabric, .... That would nickle and dime easily to $300 (about a thousand by 1980) Air conditioning was the same in the 50s and 60s. Typical European "people's cars" were pretty bare bones and rough in the 50s/60s. Sure a Rolls or Benz were super cars, but a Morris Minor/Mini, Renault, Fiat or VW were tinny, old 30s tech and rattly. If a hydromatic was even offered it was as much as the cost of the car. It made little sense, especially as over half the population on the continent and UK only "drove" a bus or train seat until the 70s. By then habits had settled. I live in the US and have owned manuals since I was 16 in 77. However my Mom learned to drive on a 3 on the tree manual Ford, but by my childhood would never again consider driving a stick shift.

I have a five speed manual transmission and with proper driving and down shifting I still have my original brake pads in good shape after over 160,000 miles on my Toyota Corolla. Manual transmission is a different way of driving from automatic transmission and I have driven with both types of transmissions, but I find that with less braking needed through down shifting that the brakes and the tires last longer. The fuel economy is very good especially on the open roads. With a four cylinder engine, a manual transmission gives the driver that extra power needed for hills by using the proper gear. Manual transmission requires the driver to pay more attention to his driving whereas driving is no effortless with automatic transmission that fatigue sets in on longer drives. I know that eventually within the next ten years or so cars will no longer be sold with manual transmissions as an option.

However, just a year ago my car was drenched in a flash flood, and I had to borrow a car temporarily, it was manual once again, thankfully I still remember how to drive a manual, so it is a benefit that I learned the manual transmission first, whenever my automatic is out I can easily rent a manual for much cheaper prices. Driving schools nowadays provide both manual and automatic options, unlike my time. I don't know if it is a good thing or not, but I do think sometimes it is better to start with something more traditional and then move on to whatever one prefers for daily and personal use.

You act like heavy traffic only exist in Manila... sure, given the longest I've been stuck in traffic was only 3 hours, I can imagine how it would feel if you stretched that out to your standards but driving my sister's automatic sedan is still annoying as F#@+ cause I can't pick and choose my gear ratios when I need it, I can't feather the friction zone when I need it, I don't have consistent engine braking which I feel gives me more control rather than relying on the brakes too much, I can't push start the engine if the battery dies, transmission problems cost a lot more money to repair, when I want to only use first gear to move a few meters it would suddenly switch to Second when I don't want/need it to, Manual Transmission last longer than Automatics, overtaking is annoying cause when I need torque and not horse power the damn thing would... Why!? Why can't I just trail brake, rev match and double clutch to get the torque I need at the time I need it... Sure... it's not a sports car (not like I have any experience driving one LOL) it's a Family Car, but for the love of God, the lack/delay in control/response isn't for me... not saying it's all bad it's just... I feel like the Cons outway the Pros on this one...

Agreed. After self driving cars prove themselves as “safe” then insurances will be cost prohibitive for most people that want to do the driving themselves. If a crash happens while the car is in “manual mode” then the lawyers will be all over it.

You won't even be able to own a car that isn't self-driving. These corporations will rush to ban traditional vehicles and politicians will back them. People will probably protest it for awhile, individuals on the other side will use inherently political and flawed "science" to make their argument on why it's safer to use a self-driving vehicle. The nanny state will eventually step in and ban vehicles that require a driver. It's okay though, after you've received covid vaccine #197624 for the new sigma variant at least you can ride in your self-driving car to your Amazon job and take a break in the Zen booth if you get too stressed out.

I think one point we missed here and i think its important. Manual transmission performance is highly dependent on the driver how good his driving his. If you do half clutch frequently while shifting gears etc you will wear out clutch and reduce performance anyways. Its very common thing to know but i see many ppl still do it. Automatic on itslef based on this situation shifts itslef so very less wear on parts. But I'll say just go electric ..

In your opinion, in mine is a primitive crap and very unenjoyable. So is for Americans, Candians and Norwegians, whose poor drive $15.000+ used hybrid automatic cars with amazing and smooth control. Not when you’re working in some crappy Balkan country on 600-700 bucks a month and buy a 400 buck graveyard on wheels that pollute the crap out of the environment. People drive automatic for comfort and enjoyable driving experiences. You’re probably the same individual who got stressed through school and life in general and got a stressful job always doing unenjoyable things, while I enjoy beautiful holidays in various countries, easy jobs, easy to drive cars. There is no point complicating my life for nothing. I have driven plenty of cars from crappy manual Citroen and Dacia to automatic Dodge, Wolfkswagen, Honda, Toyota etc.

@andreisuciu6778 ай бұрын
@@weird_perspective68 Haven’t said that. Look, in ten years time there would only be automatic cars on the road and most of them hybrid or full electric. Automatic is simply better because it is an evolved car, while manual is something primitive and harder to drive and thus it provides a less pleasant driving experience. It belongs to the past. To the 1950s. You’re supposed to have an easy and enjoyable driving experience, not constantly stress out in the traffic and constantly do multitasking. I wouldn’t do constant manual driving not even someone pays me 10k a week. Going to second, third, then second in round abouts, then third again. It’s a load of annoying crap. How can anyone sane enough enjoy this is beyond comprehension. Probably the same people who enjoy doing crappy jobs like coding and being doctors and learning these things for years and years. I make more money on simple jobs than involve no mental stress and complex tasks. I choose to enjoy a better life and avoid stress at all times.
