We reached Joshimath quite late in the night yesterday. And although we were finding it hard to contain our excitement after sighting the Himalayan Leopard on our way here, we eventually had our dinner and snuggled into the bed for a restful sleep. Due to being the peak of the winters, night was very cold and if it wasn't for the heater that was provided at the guest house, we would have found it hard to get any sleep at all.
When we woke up in the morning and came out, we were greeted by this huge wall of mountain right in-front of the guest house. There was a complete cloud cover and a forecast for more rain and snow in the afternoon.
Today we planned to visit Auli, which is at a slight higher elevation and around 12 Kms from Joshimath by road. One could also take the ropeway which takes about 30 mins to get you there.
We went to the local market to have some spicy samosa and tea for the breakfast before heading for Auli. While having the breakfast, we had a little chat with some locals and tourist and were told the road to Auli was closed yesterday due to heavy snowfall and we may not be able to go any further than a few Kms.
After considering it for a little while, we decided to try taking the road for as far as we can towards Auli and then take the ropeway, if unable to proceed any further. Having decided this, we wanted to be on our way as soon as possible as there was a forecast for a snowfall in the afternoon and we didn't want to get stuck in Auli for the next few days, if the roads closed.
In this video you will get to see this drive from Joshimath to Auli and the experiences we had.
