So good to have someone with such distinctive, strong, clear sound. A great pleasure to listen to. Now listen to Segovia playing this piece and enjoy the difference.

Muchas gracias.

Ok, I stumbled onto this. I’ve known about and have many of his pieces in my library. I have not seen this video until now, November 24 2020. This video is a recording from many years ago, so the recording technically has flaws. However Manuels performance is stellar. Sor somehow really nailed it with this variation, and Mr Barrueco nailed it also with his deliverance of the masterpiece.

Fascinating and beautiful. Not utterly flawless, but pretty damned close. What I find interesting is seeing different guitarists fingers in sections of the variations. Manuel Barrueco has his own fingerings and chord-shapes, which different from those of John Williams (for example). Nice to see that there's more than one way to play those parts. xx

I like both this and the Segovia performance. I like this especially because he plays the intro. This is the way I've heard Celedonio Romero play this piece. Thanks for posting this on YT.

Lovely playing. Alirio Diaz and Julian Bream were the blokes who blew me away with this piece when I had to learn this piece back in 1970. I'd rate Barrueco pretty close to them; great player.

I use to take master classes with him in the 80s technically great with Villa Logos and Scarlett pieces. But his Classical performance lacks the musicality that is required, such as phrasing blowing through passage that don't connect with the harmonic pace. Also classical music variations in color and tone, like Julian Bream and John Williams. I felt there was no improvement here of this piece. Plus people who have played this piece know there were countless amount of errors, notes and rhythm. I was taught if you make a mistake don't go back and repeat the notes over again like he did in the theme. The string squeaks have to go. It maybe the characteristics of the guitar but it does not enhance the music for the listener to excuse. I do respect this guy's technical ability but needs to refine some of this issues, some people technical fast that's ok as long as it has musical quality to go a long with it. I don't like to give negative reviews but as a professional guitarist I also think music comes first before technique. I do enjoy some of his early recordings a lot, but this doesn't appeal to me at all. And think the audience that are or aren't guitarist feel the same way from what hear from others. The big question can guitarist entertain for people who are not guitarists, if so than you created music. To Manuel, if you record some slow music your musicianship could possibly improve I would hope. For all the guitarist out there listen to all instruments and music out there and tell me how this performance compares. I think I'll listen to something else . David Umberger
@TSgitaar6 жыл бұрын
As you are professional guitarist (you state that yourself) I would expect that you can understand that mistakes can be made when performing a piece for a crowd. Criticizing a performance you also have to take into account what the performer is striving for, what is his interpretation of the piece? Obviously you don't like it, but that doesn't mean it is wrong. Also you can't possibly answer the question if Barrueco can entertain people who aren't guitarists. You simply don't know that. I would make a case that he is a professional guitarist who had plenty of succes, so he must be quite a good entertainer.

Who do you think you are picking apart this GIANT of classical guitar? Guy's got one video of Greensleeves and all the sudden he fancies himself an international concert artist? You think Manuel Barreuco is going to take notes about his 'string sqeaks'?, Master David Umberger? One thing you might notice with truly capable musicians and artists is that they have the humility and self-confidence (not to mention intelligence) not to pick apart others. Keep your bullshit comments to yourself. PS- Where by chance can I hear your better version? Nowhere? That's what I thought.
