And why would a dealer stand up for you if you went around them to buy direct?

Seems like everything is made with such a slim margin that there isn't customer support and repair. They just junk them. I made my amp from a MojoTone kit. If something goes then I can fix it myself.

I would draw a somewhat parallel in that having a dispute with someone is much different when you personally file a grievance for a problem, but a whole lot more attention is given when the grievance is filed by a lawyer on your behalf. I have had to do this with retailers on a couple of occasions. It sucks, but sometimes its the only way to get something done.

Fender has been refusing to fix their solid state products for years. They even discontinued software support for some of the models that the feature for buying the amp was editing software online. I can understand lack of after warranty support of a $17.99 clock radio but a $400 Brand name amp should not be a throw away.

One reason why I will NEVER buy any kind of modeling amp or any kind of amp that requires some kind of software or firmware support, a USB connection for something (other than just power) or any solid state amp that is based on integrated op-amp chips instead of discrete transistors that are easily replaceable! Seriously, there are millions of 50+ year old vintage tubes amps that are still perfectly serviceable… Can you imagine the Boss Katana, the Line 6 Catalyst, the Positive Grid Spark, or the Yamaha THR-II series amps being vintage collectables that still work and can be serviced 50+ years from now?!?!?

Another related point. Dealers talk to one another. The company rep. can be destroyed by this. I saw it happen with an amp brand (long gone now!) launching at the London Guitar show. I had a stand next door and as soon as the lack of QC, expertise and support became known to the industry workers they effectively killed the launch by spreading reality liberally all over the marketing.

Interesting debate. Dealers do customer service for many manufacturers and they do it local market (and market segment) specific. Replicating great customer service with direct sales is possible, but it’s not easy. Outsourcing might sound like a way to get scale but outsourcing service and values is tough too. If you get to higher value stuff then I think smaller dealers will still rule. Anderson’s and Sweetwater are probably better than Fender or Gibson could ever be at fulfilment and service.

I hear this very concern from Psionic. Hard to beat old school for long term reliability and especially repairability.

There are not millions of 50yo tube amps out there still serviceable. Most of the repairs I had done on my tube amps cost more than a thr, spark, or catalyst and will likely need a service again long before my thr stops working.... Which excluding the battery could easily last 50 years seeing as I have a dozen pieces of Yamaha gear from the 80's that all work perfectly. This is just a bunch of rambling nonsense trying to justify overpaying for nostalgia and trying to portray yourself as a virtuous preserver of old gear that's only better actually better in your rose tinted memory.

Never. Buy a quality tube amp. Always in style, always serviceable, an heirloom item. Most importantly, they sound better

No need to repair, technology marches on and all those products will replaced. Future generations of musicians will leverage tech that will provide better sound, better reliability and more flexibility, at a fraction of the cost of maintaining antique tube amp technology. Modelers and plugins are just the beginning. The idea that amplifier sound is somehow magically tied to 75+ year old vacuum tube tech, that can be never replicated, is nonsense. I'm with you, love my tube amps, own multiple Mesas, including 2 Mark IIC+ and also some Fender tube amps. They haven't left my house in years, I gig with Fractal gear now. My kids could care less about tube amps, they just make music. I just hope that guitar based music will still be around, and appreciated, by my grandkids.
