YES, RESULT!! Followed these directions, and now have the LCD back and working on my beloved 26 year old XP-50! BTW, I am one of the owners that has 2 black leads (pins 1 and 2) instead of a red lead in pin 1, but this fix still worked. So happy right now 😍😎😍.

It works !!! Thank you so much !!

This fixed my XP-50 LCD. Thanks very much for sharing!!! 🎉 🙏🏻 🎁 A Side Note: There is another fix for a dead LCD posted on the Web which I tried. It involves replacing five SMD capacitors on the Main Board. Some of the other SMD capacitors on my XP-50 were leaking so I replaced all 27 (Yipes!!!). After doing that capacitor repair, it did not fix my LCD screen issue... but I'm glad to say that your fix works great.
@seafarer79544 жыл бұрын
How do you know they were leaking? If they were not the culprit afterall? Did your keyboard completely crash when the screen went like that or you could play the default preset when booting? I experienced crass in the middle of a song and it stopped playing when the screen went blank. I wonder if it's the capacitors or the LCD thing. The LCD should not affect the sounds I suppose...? The keyboard had been unused for a long time and when I turned the power on it first give some noisy and cracky sounds from the headphones, but soon it went away. Until playing around with it like 10 minutes it broke and went mute with this blank screen.
@gliddenslivers9282 жыл бұрын
@@seafarer7954 - I could tell because of the dark gooey residue underneath the capacitors on the PCB. It was dissolving the epoxy trace layers on the PCB. No sounds would play and no text was shown on the LCD... the same as shown in manufacturedsoul's video 🦙

At first: Thanks, it works! Although I didnt expect it to mean operating on such a microscopical level XD Important: As you all see in the video - afterwards not only the display is finally displaying something, the lights on all the buttons do that as well! So this fix does not only "repair" the display but also restores the functionality of the instrument and menues. Now I only have to fix the damaged user memory and get a new battery. ;)

This is a great fix. Reviewing the schematic for the LCD contrast circuit, the root cause of this problem is likely bad capacitors. IC17 (chip) sends voltage to the LCD contrast pin 3. This chip is near the backup battery. Near IC17 should be two capacitors: C63 and C83. From a thread on this topic (search for roland clan 50CVR1) these capacitors leak and go bad. They are 1 uF (microfarad) 50 volt surface mount type, but can be replaced with an equivalent value. Once replaced, you may need to perform a factory reset.

Awesome fix. My XP50 is now useable again. However the left most column of pixels aren't working- not a huge problem as I can still read the display- just wondered if that might be something simple to sort too?

It worked, thanks ! Only strange problem that remains, is that it takes a lot of time to boot, sometimes 15 minutes or more, when it has been turned off for a while. It seems it needs to "warm up" before it can boot. Once "warmed up", it boots normally when I turn it off and on again. Any idea what that could be ?
@woodrow82510 жыл бұрын
hi - really clear explanation. I have not got no characters - instead I have got a row of black squares on the top line and then blank on the bottom line - cant get past this point. will this fix solve this problem too? any thoughts welcome.
@seafarer79544 жыл бұрын
Was the keyboard mute when the screen went blank like that? I mean could you still play the default preset that was first loaded although you could not see it on the screen? I experienced the device getting completely out of sound(crashing) when the screen went like that in the middle of playing a song and the song stopped playing. Ever since it won't boot normally, but gives that screen you demonstrated. Maybe it's the capacitors? I even tried to take out the battery and put it back but no help.
@Thefarunlitunknown10 жыл бұрын
Works perfectly! Thanks for posting this! I wonder - if one were to split the wire that goes into pin 3 and solder that to the ground cable, would this repair still work and not lock the contrast?
@manufacturedsoul12 жыл бұрын
Hey Lucbats, I'm not exactly sure why it would take 15 minutes for the synth too boot. That sounds like you could have more than just a screen problem with your synth. It's also possible maybe some of your caps need replaced which is also another common problem with the XP-50. You may want to look into doing a cap replacement as well as this fix.

Thank you for the tutorial, it is helpful and has saved many XP 50s from the dump. If I may ask for some advice. When turning on my XP 50 the screen lights up briefly displays a row of bars on the very top portion for just a second and then everything stays orange as you describe. After opening it up, the CN14 pin head does not have a red wire in pin 1. Instead there are black wires in pins 1 and 2 and the rest are white. Do you have an opinion regarding this. I hate to trash this keyboard as my daughters was just getting interested in using it to rehearse some of her piano and improvisation songs. Thanks!

@mjkirk129 жыл бұрын
Rob Gomez Most LCD have a pin for contrast adjustment, so it should be possible. So long as the backlight is good and bright. Typically the LCD contrast runs from 0 to 5 volts. For this repair he is setting to 0 volts (ground). But in your case, it may need a slightly higher voltage. Too much contrast will make all pixels dark and unreadable. A potentiometer wired between +5 volts and ground with the pot wiper wired to the contrast pin should allow manual adjustment.
