When you're more attached to the characters who always die in the first 20 minutes than you are to the main cast you can actually keep alive... Legit the only one I cared about was the dog.

Quite annoying to not have been able to play these two a little more. And annoying that, even though they took the risk of going in a room marked 'Private', they then didn't bother to check what was in that room. She is very charming and cute. They greatly personify the late 1800s as an exciting era, and the spirit of it even continued in to / resumed in the 1920s after the First World War, the age of rollercoasters and flapper girls.

But he appears at the start of every chapter. Like the equivalent in The Quarry, he's more like a unemotional version of a fortune teller to me. Which, in gaming terms, means it's as if he's telling the player 'Whether they live or die, it's all entertainment but you can better direct how you want it to go by paying attention to finding clues'. I like the angle Supermassive have gone with with their games where sometimes deliberately failing, or deliberately ignoring, a prompt, is what you're expected to do if you want a 'better' (or, sometimes, more interestingly gruesome) outcome. (for instance, in The Quarry, if you follow the QTE to press up, you die by becoming strung up on a rope trap, where a werewolf kills you). The player is allowed to be more of a director than a mere player., because any death doesn't end the story. There is no fail state, unless you wanted to see a particular character live until the end. And since no characters can be as likeable as these two at the start of The Devil in Me, who can't be saved anyway, the great freedom to the player is 'Don't worry about death too much (unless you really want to)'

That's what was meant to play out there. The viewers have this prologue to feel like they want to side with protagonists and learn about the killer being outright sadistic when he chooses innocent targets on a daily basis. If they anyhow deserved to die in players' eyes this would decrease the impact. "Devil in me" portraits the maniacs as being evil - they're not vengeful in justified way, it's just their nature that remains insensitive towards love, loyalty or human values in general.

It's meant to feel very unfair and horrifying. It's partly based on a real life serial killer, although with great artistic licence/based on some myths of him rather than what was actually proven of him. Prologue characters, alas, are not meant to be ones we have any meaningful control of their fates. They are the solid, set, narrative on which the rest of the game opens up from.

It’s a death situation I don’t buy short of it being a real life situation where the person has the “brains” of a paramecium… Most would do MORE after getting the upper hand like accepting what has happened and immediately run for a phone to call the cops and/ or make sure the assailant was disarmed and bound somehow or maybe even dead for safety precautions. I mean, just hitting them then running off AND with your back to them WITH them armed?? Who with any kind of brain is that dumb? And if they are- perhaps death is a gift given they are too STUPID to be able to survive in life anyhow…
