That bit about dividing a piece by extending the tape to an easily-divisible length and using it diagonally... genius. WHY have I never thought of that?????? How much we noobs could learn if we had the chance to work alongside someone like Robin for a day or two!!

You can measure insides by holding the back of your tape to it take measurement you can see and add the measurement written on the side of the tape 👍👍
@evictioncarpentry2628
@evictioncarpentry2628 4 жыл бұрын
The tape measure says 2 3/4 or 3 inch on the side of it. That's meant for inside measurements. You put the hook in the corner and butt the tape up to the other inside Corner. You take your tape measurement and add the thickness of the tape body.

I'm happy to say I was familiar with all your tips. I wish I had another to add to the list but that's all I got, except for times when we use two tapes to get something square or when we use a tape measure to lay out multiple measurements rather than doing the math. Of course there's the times when a worker tosses a defective tape off a roof just to watch it explode when it hits the ground. That's a neat trick.

Robin this is not a wind up OK but on Tip 2 where you are marking with the pen, if you aren't pulling on the black holder at the end of the tape won't you be 2mm out??? Or do you just add the 2mm the other side???
@JACKATTACKED
@JACKATTACKED 5 жыл бұрын
Pulling works externals (hooking over). Internal, butt against (inbetween) measure. End of the tape has the adjustment built in. So internal, just butt towards (slight push against end of tape) and measure. Just what Robin done here. ( butt 😂 against his finger) Don't butt up, hold the very end of the tape then pull what you think is slack and measure. You'll be off. External uses inside edge of tape hook, internal uses outside of the tape hook. If you get what i mean.

The 3-4-5 method is great to make sure one angle is square. But if one is building a box structure (as in the video), that does not mean the other three angles are. Any trapezoid can have one 90° angle, and all the other angles need not be. The really old school way to check square on a "box" that I learned was to measure the diagonals (corner to corner). If they are the same, then the box is square. And you don't even need a tap measure. You can use string or a stick with a mark on it.
