What are you talking about - I have a 2004 4Runner with this engine, one of the first, and never had any issues other than 02 sensors and a couple of ignition coils. It has 302,000 miles! This morning, I finished head gasket replacement, and there is no wear to any internal components, even crosshatch is still present on cylinder walls, cams show no signs of wear at all! Yes, it took me two days to do the head gaskets but at this mileage, it's inevitable. In fact, it had original water pump! Other than two days, it cost me $250 in OEM parts (not from US, of course). I do not consider eventual gasket failure @300K+ "bad design".

My 2004, v6 is 300k strong with no issues…. The smoothness of the engine and electronic 5 speed auto is unsurpassed. Only had to replaced valve cover gasket. Even dropped the oil pan and confirmed the pickup is clear. Replaced oil every 10k. Running on gas as well so no doubt cheaper than diesel. Owner since new. I maintain my headlights by using Suntek wrap.

I have an 03 grande petrol, 313,000ks my parents had it from new. Has never missed a beat, rear main seal done at around 250,000ks. They kept it original, I have since lifted it, 33s, comp bar, winch, lights blah blah. But when I got it I did notice it was down on power & usual a lot of fuel. 2 of the mufflers were collapsed, resonators 40% blocked, was causing a lot of back pressure. I have kept the original headers/cats but done a custom twin 2.5" - 3" exhaust, k&n filter, plugs, n gave all the plugs/sensors a good clean, serviced both diffs, transmission and it's like a new car again, the power is back fuel economy is better than factory n that's with all the extra weight & larger wheels! It's such an awesome 4x4, looks good, got power n comfortable to drive. I service it every 5k with Penrite oil.

sounds like when it lost oil pressure because of the pick-up blocked it's spun the main bearings and then the crankshaft chews into the alloy block, that motor is now stuffed because of the pick-up not getting looked at . great video Anthony 👌👍

my v6 has now done 308,000 ks and since i purchased it in 2014 wigh 188,000 on the clock and its now 2023 it is still running strong. The key is atleast regular oil changes as you said. I do mine every 6 months as it never really gets to 10,000. But now i am travelling OZ it will be done every 5 thou without fail. Ive packed the oil pan and empty 6ltr PENRITE (as that is my oil of choice always has been) oil container.

Yup, mine got to 365k, I owned it for three years but the previous owner didnt service it regularly as he said. Even though I did 5k oil changes, the pick up was nearly blocked already most probably. Wish you posted this 3 years ago. Would’ve possibly saved me 11k for a rebuilt engine. The plus side is a new engine and keep the car for another lifetime I guess

I’m from the US, where this engine was widely used in the 4Runner and Tacoma (maybe the Tundra too), and I’ve never heard of or seen this happening. What are you guys using as oil down there lol?

@@mikhael5205 I’ve heard of the headgasket issue on the 03-06 engines, but I’ve never heard of the oil pickup becoming blocked. What oil change interval are you using over there?
@joeblack1052 Жыл бұрын
I doubt anyone in the US would think of looking at the oil pickup ,they would just think of general lubrication issues due to lack of maintenance. The " car care nut" tore down a camry engine that he blamed its oil burning on the 10k mile maintenance intervals I don't recall him looking at the oil pickup. He is going to replace the oil pan on his 600K mile lexus so it will be interesting to see the state of the oil pickup on that car. Aussie are rough mofos but they do think outside the square.

@@Fraserfirrrits an issue with ANY car that isnt getting regular oil changes and the oil starts sludging up. So US it happens too. Sounds to me like you have never checked your oil pick up. Personally i never have either but have a 2003 prado petrol grfe 4.0 and am thinking to drop the oil sump just to take a look at the oil pick up.

Great video but a sad result for the owner. We had the (crankshaft)front main seal fail at around 120k on our V6 Prado. Nasty black gunk you showed down the oil filler neck. I only see the same varnish that's on our headlights down there every 6 months. Not sure If it's appropriate to mention the lack of white creamy buildup on the underside of the filler cap which is common for 1 grfe engines I think. This one looks like it has burnt crap even on the underside of the plastic cap. Thanks for another interesting post.

That’s why I change mine every 2k miles. Oil is cheap. Engines are not. Currently have 225,000 miles on mine and runs perfect.

i have heard these engines can lose oil pressure if radiator starts leaking and the engine can blow. Is it true?
@nofyfb123 Жыл бұрын
You are confused - if radiator is leaking and you allow it to run out of coolant AND do not watch temperature, the engine will blow up but not because of lack of lubrication but because of overheat - first, blown head gasket(s), second - warped head(s) and finally broken piston rings/scored/ceased pistons. In either case, new engine on the horizon.

This is one of the most reliable engines ever built. Inline with legendary 22R/22RE and their 2.7 reincarnation. If you don't change oil, any engine will eventually let go.
