My husband spent 28 yrs in the fire service in the Bay Area. He also did SAR at the WTC, and Kobe Japan. He said the search dogs became really depressed from all the death. The team members would set up successful rescues for the dogs to discover, trying to minimize the trauma. Thank You to all the First Responders!

@@sandracooke7286 That's why they tell people to evacuate. And people never listen. They think the next storm will be like the last one and been thru it before. But people never learn. Anything over a Cat 2 you definitely want to get away, especially from the ocean. It's just one of my favorite places. I'm so very sad for the island and all of its inhabitants. I pray for everyone who lost their stuff but even more for those who lost their lives. Ppl who don't live in storm prone olaces have a hard time understanding but once you've lived through a few your level of fear goes down. This storm turned at the last minute too and that affected the way that things transpired. My gf is in Sarasota n she got lucky,of course. I just hope that the buildings get built back to withstand these storms and that the mobile and manufactured homes are not used to rebuild. They simply cannot withstand these hurricanes. They call this state Floridumb for a reason. People have destroyed more of this state than any storm ever has. Call them strong willed but it's more ego of too many thinking they should just build anywhere and everywhere. Too many people and it's only going to get worse as our population keeps growing. Only one way out of S FL and that is north. You can only evacuate so many so quickly. Places like Sanibel Island should not be so populated as barrier islands are natural buffers to storms. When we destroy them with development, cover them in houses and concrete, you see the result we all saw recently. Back in 2011 I believe, the restrictions for developers were loosened and they really started to build relentlessly across this state. Low lying areas that should not be built upon (flood zones). And the more we cover this state in concrete, the less area water has to seep into the ground. The state already is basically on water. Heck it used to all be under water at one point. And will be again one day. Amazing that people still do not use common sense when we already knowing living next to water can flood at some point. With hurricanes it's not IF it will come. It is WHEN.

This video does not show search & rescue dogs. Earthquake search and rescue canines, from near-by states, could be helping with this search and recovery effort. Use of search dogs would add to the chances for finding people still alive under all of that wreckage. This video shows wreckage, under which people might be found alive, but no use of cranes or fork lifts or bull dozers for removing fallen building materials. Shows people talking, and we do want to hear from people involved in this rescue operation, but not much other activity.

Itis EXTREMELY sad, What I cannot understandis why people build wooden houses in hurricane areas. Or do not take a very long bus in the opposite direction? Even with nowhere to go it is surely bette rthan death? I would take my home insurance and use it to buy a motor home. That would be a good charity to begin as parts of the US are no longer liveable and choices are slim to none.

What is sad that these people did not get the message a monster is on their doorstep . The way hurricanes blow up in strength so fast and over shallow areas and maintain strength is a different animal . It kind of acts like a tornado with fast development and no time to get out . It is so sad what has happened to the Ft Myers, North Port, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs and Pine and Sanibel Islands. Those poor people were told they had nothing to worry about because Tampa to Sarasota was the area going to be hit and it ended up not where the storm hit and by that time it was too late to do anything. They kept saying it was going somewhere else. People were looking at the center of the track. No thought for the edges. I could tell by Sunday it was going to turn (pull a Charley). Even on Monday the Weather Channel started projecting a hit in Venice. Monday was plenty of time to go but to where? You must understand older people with modest means are fearful of leaving their homes behind. The idea of nothing to come back to is terrifying when you are older. You know you don't have time to start over. Also I think there was that feeling of it will pass. Even if it had hit Tampa those little barrier islands would have had high water.

Hey, I have a brilliant idea.(sarc) how about having a site that residents can check in on??! All of the people that listened and evacuated are safe in another city or state or even country. We are not allowed to go back abs there is no way to “check in”. In my family there are 3 of us that are alive and well yet we are probably listed as missing. Now they have people “ forcibly” breaking into our homes to do “deep searches” for bodies. If we were lucky enough to still have a home that survived with a locked door, they are breaking it open. Then the have an app that links right to the Fed gov to tell them what they find. Now they leave and their home is open for looters. A simple check in site could have solved all this!
