@@Crazycoyote-we7ey No, the one who brushed that flower off the windowsill in episode 1 is someone else, who hasn’t appeared since. Sayaka Kinoshita is credited as 杏 (“Xìng” in pinyin, or “Shin” in romaji) for that episode only. As for why she has a name when her only appearance to date has consisted of a walk down a hallway, a sweep of the hand, and a nonverbal vocalization? That would be telling.

This episode had a guest director/storyboard animator, which is why it looks so different. They put a lot of emphasis on body language and scene composition. It really is a one of a kind episode even within its own show. One of my all time favorites.

I think there’s commentary on SakugaBlog about it. But yeah, this is the kind of ep sakuga nerds adore, and IIRC, the director’s said it would only have been possible this early in the show’s run, before deadlines started closing in on them.

It looks to me like a lot of the fluid scenes are rotoscoped. Especially the poison testing scene at the start seems particularly fluid like a live-action shot traced over.

Main reason why she was desperate to get her better but had no real authority to make her voice heard nor could she flaunt her order being from the Emperor himself because it would cause unnecessary gossip that would end up hurting her later on.

You have to understand that Lihua and Gyokyuo are in competition for the Emperor's favor and to become the next Empress. Becoming the Empress can mean great things for a girl's family and home, and her Ladies in Waiting can benefit greatly from it too. As it is known that the Emperor favors Lady Gyokyuo with the death of the prince and Lady Lihua sick her ladies in waiting are at risk of losing quite a bit. They also are all from noble families, and have no idea how to take care of a sick person. Their focus is to keep Lihua looking pretty to draw the eye of the Emperor back, so they put priority on her appearance over her health, hence the makeup and burning incense rather than bathing her. Then here comes Maomao, who is a lady in waiting for not only another concubine, but the primary rival of their own concubine. The way they see it, Maomao is here to sabotage things and keep Lihua from getting better, or catching the Emperor's eye again, so they just look to sabotage her. They didn't understand her being sick and the powder were connected, even if they were told it was poisonous and banned, they just saw it as a way to give Lihua an edge in the competition. Also, just because the Emperor ordered Maomao there to take care of her had no bearing on the other Ladies in Waiting. No matter how much they sabotaged her, Maomao can't just go back and say the ladies won't let her examine her, it is Maomao's responsibility to find a way to get the job done, the Emperor won't interfere. Had she failed and Lihua died Maomao likely would have been beheaded for failing to obey the Emperor's command. It's why JInshi stepped in, to give Maomao a fighting chance.

Don't forget. Both Gyogoku and Lihua are barely in their 20ies. Both must offer their bodies their bodies to the mightiest man in the empire or they and their families might suffer the consequences. Lihua had her child slowly die while suffering from the same illness. The only people she could rely on were her retainers who were too busy on optics. Lihua is a precious cinnamon bun who could have done so much more if the Emperor didn't find her appealing.

7:18 The issue was that, while the Face Powder was banned, the people who were collecting them from everyone in the inner palace didn't explain it properly to the ladies-in-waiting on why they were doing it. They only explained it to the Head Lady-in-waiting and just collected it because of it being a Emperor's order, aka., follow the order no question asked and with no explanation. So, majority of the ladies-in-waiting didn't know why the Face Powder was banned and confiscated, so many hid them away in order to keep it safe.

Lol hearing Jami swearing so much is such a rarity that I absolutely love it. I felt so bad for Lady Lihua this episode when I was kinda hating on her a bit before it. I really do like her acknowledging Maomao and accepting her even though her ladies in waiting might not lol. Lady Gyokuyou is still the best with her ladies.

6:50 Maomao realized she might have just cost herself her head, she's a commoner and the ladies-in-waiting are from prestigious families, hitting one of them could get her beheaded. The fact that they were killing Lady Lihua in their ignorance puts them so far in the Emperors displeasure keeps Maomao's head on her neck. Actually it was one of the ladies-in-waiting who tossed the note away, Lady Lihua never saw the note.

It's somewhat understandable that the lady in waiting would still be applying the makeup, it was a product widely used for perhaps decades so to be told it's poisonous and not understanding why it's poisonous especially in that era would be expected if anything the story is probably an example of how despite the dangers the powder was still being manufactured and used I mean look at lead and how much it was affecting practically everything in our lives not just for decades but hundreds of years even after finding out the dangers of it to our health it's not entirely gone.

Most people didn't realized the only reason why Maomao can smack the soul out of that lady-in-waiting is because Jinshi is there. If Jinshi isn't there Maomao can't do anything and if she did, chances are she will be apprehend and punish for attacking nobles. Jinshi who is the highest ranking there prevent other lady-in-waiting to retaliate as the assumption is Maomao act according to Jinshi's will.

To clarify(not sure if someone pointed this out already) When Maomao tried to warn both concubines about the face powder, only lady Gyokuyo’s either saw and read the note or one of her attendants saw it and passed the message, it could be that only a few of them or possibly none of them could read but passed it on to someone that could read and thus saved her child. In the case of Lady Lihua however we saw one of her attendants notice the flower with the note but either because the flower had a rag attached to it or because she didn’t think much of it decided to just dispose of it, it was not Lady Lihua who found the note but one of the attendants. Lady Gyokuyo attempted to inform her of the issue directly but her paranoia and pride blinded her to the facts which is what we can only assume is why she started to go downhill from there. The poison was slowly killing her and she was letting it happen as a form of punishment for not helping her child.
