I don’t know the full history of the Mere and Patu, but I do know a traditional mere could sometimes take years to shape so it was held often passed down from generation to generation. So it’s likely the Patu was made from materials that were faster to shape?

What do you think is the most deadly Polynesian weapon
@KoaStudio2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think there is one… just like in any region or era, each weapon style and combat was tailored to the warriors that used them. So each one is deadly in the right hands for the right job.

Traditionally, the patu was used as a finishing weapon to complement the taiaha. During battle, the patu was holstered within the wielder’s tatua (belt). After a taiaha battle reached the end, the downed opponent would be dispatched with a blow to the head with a patu or one of the other hand clubs (mere, kotiate, wahaika). Whale bone or stone (pounamu or onewa) were the preferred materials used as they would ensure a quick kill and the head of the opponent could be removed with little effort.

So for deadliness, this weapon was preferred by the Maori, l’m not sure about the rest of Polynesia
