For those who would like a free alternative to MATLAB, I would check out GNU Octave. It is widely used and can generally run MATLAB files without the need for changing any code. Given the role it appears OSC plays in data transfer, I assume this OSC is the OSC known as Open Sound Control. If true, this means the ability to make music using Muse via your brainwaves is doable. I just checked the Muse SDK Docs and it is Open Sound Control. This excites the holy bejeebus out of me. Alvin Lucier did a performance in the 60s using his brainwaves to excite percussion instruments. The piece is called Music for Solo Performer and the performance is available on KZbin. Highly worth checking out. There is work like this being done by diy/hacker artists, but Muse could be a simpler entry point. I'm going to have to look more into this. Thanks for the info, Cody ✌

No, multiple people can use the same device at different times. Good question! I would recommend looking into the Muse 2 :)

Cody, you are a great teacher & a super geek! I saw your vid as a suggestion under a Muse video done by PotatoStrong. I'd never heard of these devices. I appreciate your detail & science. I have read that there is some indication that cell phones affect cells negatively. Do you think the electronics in these devices vould have a negative impact, if used regularly for meditation?
@CodyRallMD7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I glad you enjoyed the vids. That is a really interesting question about the electronics and brain health. I have read about new studies are suggesting a negative effect on brain cells from radiofrequency waves. I was actually thinking about doing a video on it soon. That being said, the evidence is not conclusive enough to cause wide spread panic or to change medical textbooks just yet. Also, I don't know the amount of radiation emitted by Muse, but I think it is much lower than cell phones. For example, a bluetooth wireless earpiece has a SAR value of around 0.001 watts/kg (less than one thousandth the SAR limit for cell phones as set by the FDA). I would imagine the wireless EEG headsets would have similar values but I would need to look into it more.

Thank you for both tutorials and it's actually because of your personal EEG device review that I'm getting my Muse headband today. I've ordered it because I want to be able to know when I'm more in Theta or Alpha states, with the hope that this headband makes it easier to do that. I'm just a personal user interested in improving meditation and visualisation, so MATLAB is way beyond my needs. I wasn't sure from your video whether the Muse Developer tools would enable me to understand when I'm in one state or another. It seems to be showing that you're in all states at the same time, so can you clarify this for me?
@CodyRallMD8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Rachel! I think you are asking for quantitative EEG abilities. As far as I know, the Muse visualizer is only qualitative at this point. By visualizing the brainwaves in Muse Developer, you should be able to see an increase in Alpha or Theta brainwave amplitudes in the recording. However, this will only be a qualitative measure (just seeing the increase on the visualizer). As far as I know, the Muse Developer tools do not allow you to do quantitative EEG yet without using a program like EEG lab with MATLAB. It is a great thought though, maybe we should recommend to the company to add a qEEG function so people can start making histogram graphs of brainwave ratios. Sorry for all the technical jargon. I just filmed a series of new videos with a lot more information on understanding these devices, how they work, and how to read the brainwave data. Stay tuned for much more!

OUTDATED: this doesn't work with the last version of Muse (2016) and muse 2016 cannot connect to your mac(well done muse! Did your headband fried your brain ? ) . Nice for buying something that should help you to relax...F***!

Hello Dr. Cody, I can not conect my Muse device with the Muse-IO, it only give me this: No Paired devices exist with name or MAC!, coul you bring me any advice about this?

Did you set for the correct data port as instructed on the Muse website? I'm not sure if people are still using Muse-IO as much, now that Muse Monitor and Muse Direct are available
