Paul I really do think this is the practical answer, keep making these. Good to see initiated jointly from customer as well. This kind of exposure educates buyers, puts scrutiny on sub par manufacturing (ie: balanced name annd shame) and gives the opportunity to highlight improvements. Until such time proper QC is adopted in large batch manufacturing in carbon it’s wise for customers to protect their investment in any new bike. Great stuff 👍

The rear brake mounts on my 2021 TCR were out of alignment top to bottom, when I went to pick up the new bike the shop spent 45 mins trying to set the rear brake up, but it wasn't good enough, the brake pads could not contact the disc evenly. I took it back and gave them the ultimatum to repair, replace or refund (an easy job with the right tool). Neither the shop nor Giant NZ had the tools to face the mount, they ended up replacing the frame. But one funny thing was when they transferred all my parts over to the new frame (and totally messing up the fit I had done on the bike) they actually fitted one of the bottle cages upside down!

£1900 for a carbon frame that likely has a “should cost” in manufacturing of £400 and I am being generous. It should be 100% perfect. With deep respect to your considerable skill, the role of QCing it as an independent mechanic should not be needed. The frame should be perfect and not require any “minor tweaks”. The one you showed should be sent straight back. Paying that sort of money and then needing to pay a mechanic to “correct” it would be unacceptable in any serious professional industry. Chinese brands have a great opportunity if they can get their quality and price point right on a par with what they are doing to the car industry. The western cycle brands charge top dollar for bottom dollar quality.

I would love to hear how this turns out. I have a 2020 revolt that has issues. My BB is oversized and the old frames have aluminum dropouts bonded to the frame. I now have paint bubbles all around the joints from galvanic corrosion. I haven’t talked to a giant dealer about it because I don’t have a reliable shop anywhere near me. And because giants warranty clearly states it doesn’t cover corrosion and if anyone other then a giant dealer works on the bike it voids the warranty. I stripped all the 105 stuff off my bike and rebuilt it with AXS.

My local repairer in Thames Ditton alerted me. I had not really noticed….Giant replaced the frame after I went back to the dealer. No issue. But, I wasted a lot of my own time dealing with them, no one ever apologised and it took a long time to receive the replacement. I can see why some customers would just pay you to do the remedial work if they want to get on with having their bike built. I probably would too. The cycle industry does need to wake up. Giant are probably one of the better (or least bad) mass market brands too. Fascinating too that there is seemingly no comment from Giant. They must have seen this…..

Can't say I am surprised by this. I ordered a Revolt frame around 18 months ago, and the quality was very shoddy. As well as an obvious blemish in the paint on the down tube that you spotted immediately (don't know how QC missed it), the internals if the frame were very poor. Looking into the head tube there were sharp ridges and loos carbon fibres. Inside the BB was terrible. As well as sharp ridges, tenting, and loose fibres, there was a whole layer of carbon that had completely separated as there was no resin to bond it. There were also sharp ridges, tenting and loose fibres inside the chain stays. The brake mounts were also pretty shoddily finished. I sent it back for a refund and ordered the Vitus Venom Evo frame set, which was immaculate in comparison. Such a shame Wiggle went bust as it is a great bike and rides superbly (sold my Cervelo R3 as I stopped riding it in preference for the Vitus).

How should i expect a solid creak free bike with these current standards, that rely on accuracy? It only takes 1 second to see the vast difference in quality, precision, engineering and development in a Superbike compared to the toy like products the bike industry sell us.

Have you received a 2021 alloy frame on the revolt? I've got no issues it's just got a stupid internal routing system that i'd actually like to convert into external purely on the basis that it's such a pain to fix stuff while working with it.

Bought a Giant Revolt Advanced Pro in 2020. After 1.5 years the seat tube broke. Clean Horizontale line break in the middle of the tube. Quite sure that it was a production fault. Took them 7 months to replace. Which made me even more angry.

There is no doubt that frame has appalling finish work on both the carbon and the paint. You have a very high standard in your mind of what is the right level of quality control that every bike maker should achieve. You're getting worked up about pretty standard crap quality control, the fixing of which has been a part of what sets good shops appart from the hacks, and what justifies paying good money for a pro build on a new high-end bike for people that value that quality. Back in the late 70's and 80's, any pro level or custom bike we built got the BB chased and faced, the HS reamed and faced, and frame and dropout alignment checked and corrected. Some of the most highly esteemed handbuilt frames with the best finish work still needed the shop to finish those "loose ends." Some of the small local builders expected us to do the milling for them. It'll cost your poor customer more time and grief to warranty that frame and get another one back that is only slightly better than to fix this one and be done with it. That being said, if the local Giant dealer could do this stuff, the customer could probably get Giant to pay for it. They are pretty easy and generous when asked.

For sure. We weighed all that up in consultation. In fact we always do that and often the answer is for us to just fix it. This one was different. I felt it was so bad that it had to go back.

I got a giant revolt frameset this past winter…..started with flaking carbon off the headset bearing race….then my mechanical rep brakes would not fit inside the dropped seat stays (not really there fault)….but then at the veeeery end I went to install the front derailleur and when you fastened it down the tail would kick out about 7-8mm. The front mount was riveted to the frame crooked! Nightmare…the giant rep ended up buying it back from the shop I got it from….oy😂

I do pay attention to details after your videos 👌🏻 Also I saw other frames and made an unboxing. There must be a reason for the frame to be so bad. Never seen Giant this poorly made. I bought a Giant bike last year to replace my 10 year old Giant. There was nothing much wrong with it but I fancied a change. As soon as I received the new bike I knew the quality wasn't even close to the old one. I also bought my 7 year old son a Giant at the same time and the quality on that was no good either. We still have the bikes but I'll replace them next year for something that's not Giant.

I was warned against buying one of these by a friend who works in a bike shop. They had endless warranty issues with the framesets including cracking seat tubes, and Giant never had stock to replace them. They’ve ended up stripping numerous complete bikes to get customers back on the road. Bought a Specialized crux instead, and whilst not perfect, the frameset was finished very well.

Public shaming is probably the best course of action. If it were mine I'd have Mapdec do the build along with youtube shorts for every little fix. On the root causes, I'd say all the problems came from one work station and poor final QC processes. Additionally, I'd take the designers to task for designing a bike that is difficult to fabricate correctly.

Just a random comment here: i recently built a BXT direct from China gravel frame, £390 delivered including post and taxes. All the engineering is astonishingly good and the build was faultless. Why did i go direct? Because the so called customer back up provided by local bike shops and Western brands is just a myth. This thread is full of comments that demonstrate this. Sad really.....

Good work! How old do you have to be to remember getting a steel frame from the builder, taking out the Campagnolo kit - chasing and facing, cleaning out threads, making sure the fork/crown/steerer tube was ready for the crown race, etc. all AFTER checking frame alignment and maybe correcting dropout and rear mech hanger alignment? With carbon is all that supposed to be done by the builder instead? Are ANY of these things perfect right outta the box? How do you determine whether to correct the minor flaws or reject the frame/fork? Finally WTF does someone spend all this time/money/effort on something baked-up by GIANT? A made-to-measure frame from an established and trusted artisan is one thing..but this...?

Well. It is the job of the dealer to do the final QC before it meets the rider. We are not a Giant dealer. So someone failed. Also much of this is beyond minor corrections.
