That bit about the shadow PM's grandfather reminds me of another world leader with a grandfather who was intimately involved in crimes against humanity: Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. His grandfather was a guy called Nobusuke Kishi, a big-dick official in the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo. Kishi did things like paying yakuza grunts to break strikes in Chinese factories, running a coal mine in Fushun with a greater than 50% death rate per year, and making incredibly extensive use of brothels.

I think a big reason so many Ukrainians supported the Nazis was because the Soviet Union genuinely oppressed them and thought the Nazis were a better alternative (which obviously doesn't justify war crimes, just pointing out their likely reasoning). We only know that wasn't true because of hindsight. Any look at the inter-war history of Eastern Europe shows it was dominated by what was essentially a red scare, and then along comes the anti-communist Nazis, so obviously they were going to join them. In the case of Ukraine they basically would have considered the Soviets to be an occupying power, which they essentially were. So these Ukrainians deluded themselves into believing that their best chance for an independent country was by helping the Nazis, even though the Nazis never would have allowed it. Kind of like the Southern Lost Cause Myth.
