The Maple Leaf Rag is undoubtedly the most famous ragtime of all time. Prior to its publication, the composer, Scott Joplin, expected the piece to be a great success. He told Arthur Marshall that "The Maple Leaf will make me the king of ragtime composers". And he was right. Today, Scott Joplin is considered to be the greatest and most well-known ragtime composer of all time.

This is how you swing a rag, lightly and subtly! Otherwise it sounds stupid as heck, like that one piano roll that I have.

I also heard your no-swing version, and I agree that version was very straight, too straight, and this version is swung, but almost too swung. I've heard it played halfway between your 'swing' and 'no swing' versions, and that sounded right to me. But overall, I think that your swing version sounds a bit better than the non-swinger. I also liked the embellishments in this one, which added a lot of 'rag' to the piece.

While this isn't as terrible as most. This is not correct. Ragtime is played straight. The "swing" feel is provided by the syncopation. I do not deny this was well played, but Ragtime and swing are mutually exclusive.

Yeah, I agree with you. Since I uploaded this video, many people have said something similar. I am starting to like the straight version more. The reason why I played it with swing is because the first ever rendition of Maple Leaf Rag I heard was from a video by Cory Hall, and he played it with a lot of swing. So I played it too in a similar way and I liked it a lot. I still like it, however I do agree that Ragtime should be played straight. I found the Maple Leaf Rag to be the only Joplin piece that sounds fun too when swung.

@@theragtimevirtuoso8534 I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been so negative. I am somewhat of a snob and purist when it comes to Ragtime. This is well played, and I shouldn't have put you down as I did.

Not a lot of actual swing here, just a few extra twiddles mostly, I was expecting more acentuation on the syncopation. Great though isn't it :-)

Seems like the semiquavers are swung but not the quavers. Ok, that seems natural for this piece, but I think I still prefer it played straight.

I've also uploaded a version without swing, if you prefer. I can understand, sometimes I like the no-swing version more than the swing version. It depends mostly on my mood at the moment.

@@simongross3122 Haha, are you going to learn to play Maple Leaf at some point? It's a very fun piece to play, I can definitely recommend it. Listening is fine too though because the audience is also important. Why would you play something anyway if nobody listens to it xD

@@theragtimevirtuoso8534 My main instrument is a baritone saxophone, but I have been trying to learn piano. I do have it on my list of pieces to learn, but I am a long way off it at the moment. So far I am more successful writing music than playing :)

@@simongross3122 You write music? That's very cool! For piano? If yes, then I find it amazing that you can write music for an instrument you are still learning! And also cool you play the saxophone. I really don't know anything about a saxophone, nor how it works, but it seems to me a very hard instrument to play - so hats off to you! I also play the accordion by the way. I've been playing it since I was 5, so for a very long time. I think most people also have no idea how it works xD But I can tell, the accordion is a very difficult instrument. It's very hard to play pieces perfectly, as you can't see your left hand. Every button you press with your left hand has to be through muscle memory. Luckily for me, I have built up a sort of muscle memory because I started playing so early, but it is still hard. I wish you the best of luck on your piano journey :)
