Dubas has repeatedly said that Wes Clark was his guy to keep him in check. The guy who challenges you on things, which people need. Clark was his devils advocate, and he likely needs that still but also that may not have been as good with Tre

I would imagine Dubas was willing to pay him more, and he is fun to work with. Dubas clearly picks his guys and rides or dies with them. I imagine it's an alluring prospect when you're one of the guys in Dubas' "inner circle". IMO it's a stretch to think this has anything to do with the Leafs' future outlook as an organization.

To be fair, his decisions and contracts have lead to most of the Leafs issues and pretty much every single cap issue they deal with. You want a comparison? Stamkos and Marchessault sign in Nashville. Instead of 4x8 and 5x5.5, they sign for 6x10 and 7x7. Which means two aging players eat away over 18% of your entire cap. And he did that TWICE. On the SAME TEAM. Now there's blame to be placed on Shanahan, absolutely. Blame on the coach and players by not performing well, definitely. He guaranteed them a playoff spot with that level of talent and that they wouldn't have the depth (both in defense and the net) to actually win a Cup. And Dubas' actions and decisions will continue to affect Toronto's effectiveness until Tavares' deal is done. But even then, those contracts overvalued both Nylander and Marner, and arguably Matthews as well. There's undoubtedly 4-6 million in dead cap where the Leafs could have gone after BOTH Matt Roy and Tanev, but they settle for one.

He trades for Karlsson to bolster the pens and that same year when they’re a little out of a playoff spot they trade away one of their best players (who’s not even 30) and now this offseason he signs older guys again to try and make playoffs?
