Haha, the offsetting roughing calls plus extra 2 for Zinbanijad were "sort-of fighting" penalties. I guess it wasn't "fighting" enough for the refs to feel like giving them 5, but it was basically a penalty for fighting because Zinbanijad got the instigator. Kind of a weird ruling on that but seems reasonable.

@@pohateos9394 Very confusing comment. Who are you referring to? I am pretty sure that if the NHL had "favourites", both the Leafs and the Rangers would be pretty darn close to the top. And the Ranger player did, basically, get the instigator penalty. Sure, neither got 5 for fighting, but it was only a mini-fight anyway. If anything, it seems odd to give him the extra two minutes if you didn't call it a fight, and that is coming from a Lear fan.

The refs created an extra 2 for roughing that didn't exist to make up for the instigator that can't exist without the fight. They got it right.

The NHL really needs to clamp down on these retaliation scrums after a good hard clean hit. The instigator rule should also apply in instances like this and only one guy should be sent off. It's hockey, hitting is part of the game. If the hit is dirty, let the officials sort it out. No player should have to go to the box when all they are doing is defending themselves.
