MAPLE vs. BIRCH | Wood Bat Review

Today we're comparing my favorite wood bat turn model (Ronald Acuña Jr's "RA13") in two different types of wood: Louisville Slugger RA13 MAPLE vs. B45 RA13 BIRCH.

I still would like to see you go to Walmart, target, Dicks places like that get a bunch of cheap store bats and have an all out cheap bat madness tournament and see what hidden gems you may be able to find for the people that can't pay more than 100 dollars for a bat that would be a cool series

Totally agree with you on the best turn model being the RA13. I've tried a number of turn models, and last fall I picked up a maple RA13 from Old Hickory. Right from the start it just felt good in my hands. Sweet spot felt much bigger than my NA28, and I really like the flared knob. My only gripe is that the flared knob is so big that i can't fit my doughnut on there so i'll need to find another weight.

I would love for you to do a comparison/review and maybe a "science behind" episode on direction of grain. Supposedly,traditional ash is against the grain, like hitting on the edge of a deck of cards, and birch/maple is with the grain, like contacting the ball with the deck of cards face. I'd love to see velo comparisons of edge vs. face on the same bat, etc, etc. There's a lot of confusion out there about direction of grain and even highschool/juco coaches dont know or agree. Thanks for all you do!

For three years, I bought my son birch for his collegiate summer league because it's more durable. This summer, he broke his favorite 110-turn birch early in the season. I couldn't find a decent birch 110-turn for less than $180. So I bought him a couple of M*Powered maple 110's off of JustBats on clearance. Good choice. Those maples rock! He likes stiff bats. 110-turns are already stiff. A maple 110-turn is super-stiff. He just bangs with those maple 110's.

My experience has been Birch is more enjoyable to hit with, but goes flat/breaks internally faster than maple. I haven't noticed a big EV difference. I do see a lot more maple bats get split in half. I'm just an old man playing in wood bat leagues.

Thx for the vid. I'm 0/2 on ash Louisville bats, both broken in less than 15 hits, cracking at the handle. Saving up for something birch at this point. 😢

My cheapo 32” LS weighs 934g and my 33” B45 weighs 845g. Might have something to do with bat speed/velocity?

Quick question, Is the barrel size the same for both bats? On the B45 website it says 2.36 which seems a little small compared to the Louisville.
