Interesting suggestion, considering that John Hughes (the director) grew up in Grosse Pointe. I probably know a little too much about John Hughes since there aren't a lot of people who were born in Lansing, Michigan who are famous. It's a short list, but John Hughes is on it. I'm not famous, but I was also born in Lansing, Michigan. And so I can name them. Steven Seagal, Matthew Lillard, Burt Reynolds, Magic Johnson, Timothy Busfield, Ed Farhat (the Sheik, pro-wrestler), Ahney Her (actress, Gran Torino), Steve Huffman (co-founder and CEO of Reddit), Larry Page (co-founder of Google), Jim Sonefeld (drummer for Hootie and the Blowfish) and Gretchen Whitmer (governor of Michigan.) That's pretty much it. i can confirm that Grosse Pointe is bougie, I lived in Grosse Pointe Woods for a couple years. A friend of mine and I grabbed something left for trash pickup on the curb and put it on Ebay, and it sold for $600. Sorry for rambling. ☺

There are TWO movies that set the litmus test of 80's youth, FBDO and The Breakfast Club. Both provide a good taste of growing up in that decade.

One thing i loved about his movies is how realistic the teens are that is how teens then interacted with each other. There was a great video on KZbin where a teen in 1986 took his camera to high school one random day. It showed the teens swearing, smoking and just talking about whatever they wanted. They gave each other the bird (middle finger flip off) and where teasing each other like crazy. It was real and an incredible 1980s experience. Luckily he kept the tape to upload after all these years. A time capsule for the future

When they put their head against the window they were in Sears Tower which was the Sears Tower in Chicago world's tallest building. It held this title for 22 years from 1974 until 1998 (Sears will the department store that ultimately went bankrupt in 2018)

This is such a wonderful time capsule of a film! Great moments and amazing quotes. Some trivia: During the parade, several of the people seen dancing (including the construction worker and the window washer) originally had nothing to do with the film. They were simply dancing to the music being played, and John Hughes found it so humorous that he told the camera operators to record it. The shot of Ferris playing the clarinet was done on the spot. Someone spotted the instrument as part of the set, and Matthew Broderick said he could play it, which of course he couldn't. According to John Hughes, Cameron was based, in large part, on a friend of his in high school. "He was sort of a lost person. His family neglected him, so he took that as license to really pamper himself. When he was legitimately sick, he actually felt good, because it was difficult and tiring to have to invent diseases, but when he actually had something, he was relaxed."

The parade was a real German neighborhood parade going on. Hughes got permission to use the real parade as backdrop, so all but the close in people on the float and dancing nearby were real spectators. Like the construction guy and other nearby background crowd shots.

"Life moves pretty fast - if you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller. It used to be a lot of older cars had the speedo/odometer linked to the rear differential or axle. As a preventive to easy tampering it was later linked to a front wheel. It is even easier to 'rollback' the mileage on certain digital odometers with special electronic tools. When they filmed the parade scene, there was an actual Von Steuben Day Parade going on, and they had their own float inserted into it and just filmed spontaneously - the bewilderment in the reviewing stand was real. They made radio announcements for people to enjoy the parade and be in a John Hughes film and an extra 10,000 people showed up, providing good longshots. Additional footage was shot on a soundstage downtown. In this same genre, you might like RAISING ARIZONA (1987), UNCLE BUCK (1989), CAPTAIN RON (1992), MY COUSIN VINNY(1992), RAT RACE (2001) - Enjoy!

I saw this movie in the theater as a teen .. and yes it influenced me to take a few days off. In the school bus at the end of the movie ... Mr. Rooney saw all those kids, who were junior high students, who already looked up to Ferris. 😂 I think this was one the first movies with a post credits scene I ever saw. The guy in the police station talking to Jeanie was Charlie Sheen.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of my favorite "feel-good" movies of all time -- and has some personal connections for me (for years, people would meet me and remark, "You look like the kid from War Games!" Later, I had strangers shouting "FERRIS!" at me from across the quad. That surprised me.). Anyhoo, I think my *favorite* "feel-good" movie ever* is "Enchanted April" -- which is also one of the sweetest and most romantic movies I've ever seen. I recommend it highly, and I think you would enjoy it! *In competition with "Star Wars," "Delicatessen," "Everything Everywhere All At Once," and "Hedwig & the Angry Inch."

John Hughes, the Director, picked ALL the music out of his own personal library of music. If you don't know the Hughes' movies: Home Alone Sixteen Candles Pretty in Pink The Breakfast Club Planes, Trains, Automobiles Uncle Buck and writer for National Lampoons Vacation Mr. Mom Career Opportunities Almost all his movies were centered in Chicago, his hometown. In fact, if you watch all of them, they are centered not only in Chicago, but the houses are always large colonials in the near North Side upscale neighborhoods of Chicago suburbs like Winnetka, Lake Forest Highland Park, ie very nice areas. The school scenes were actually shot at Glenbrook North HS, Hughes ' Alma mater. During the shooting of Ferris, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey (not Mia Sara) started dating and tried to keep it quiet. Mia Sara was only really 17 at the time. Matthew B and Jennifer were actually mid 20s. Many of the secretary's wise azzz lines were improvised, and Hughes went with the improvised lines, like "they think he's a real righteous dude". I also think they improvised the pencil pulling out of her hair scene. Originally it was just the one, but she suggested to Hughes she could pull out a lot more. I love the exchange btw Ferris and the big schnoz parking attendant. There are so many immigrants who live in Chicago (my Mom grew up in Chicago, and we actually lived in the Northwest suburbs for 3 years in the early 70s, so I know Chicago), that you sometimes assume people might not speak English. Thus Ferris says, "watch, I'll slip this guy a finski ($5 bill). Do you speak English? And the parking guy says slowly, "uhh, what country do you think this is?" Lmfao 😂. You guys kind of short shrifted the TEACHER scenes. Yes, they purposely made the teachers ridiculously boring. The 1st one taking attendance was actually an Economics teacher before he got into acting. So the extended roll call is a classic scene. The "Bueller, ....Bueller,.... Bueller" scene is iconic. Decades later, that actor said that whenever people noticed who he was, they would yell out those 3 words, and he loved it. Wish you had reacted more to that. Also, you missed the SAVE FERRIS on the Wrigley Field marquee. Its probably the best comedy of the 80s, and imo Hughes' best movie. Home Alone and Breakfast Club are probably 2 and 3. I highly recommend you react to WAR GAMES, Matthew Broderick's first big hit movie before this, also kind of a teen comedy with a more serious story behind it, but a great movie. Also, much later in his career, Broderick plays a HS teacher himself in a dark comedy called ELECTION, which is very interesting movie. He was also very good in THE CABLE GUY. Another great Chicago centric film shot in Chicago which I think would make a great double feature with Ferris is HIGH FIDELITY, starring John Cusack, a record store owner trying to find the right girl. If you're a music nerd you'll love this, but its also a romantic comedy more from the male perspective. Tons of interesting guest stars, and just a great film.

I'm proud to say I have: 1. Been to the Chicago Art Museum (saw the Seurat Pointilism masterpiece) 2. Drove on Lake Shore Drive hundreds and hundreds of times. 3. Stood on those bars leaning against the window at the top of the Sears Tower when it was the tallest building in the world. 4. Ate a burger at the Billy Goat Tavern under the Wells Street bridge (also of SNL fame in Cheeburger Cheeburger skit). 5. Been to dozens of Cubs games and have sat very close to those Ferris seats down the 3rd base line. Have driven all over Chicago and the near north side suburbs like Glenbrook, Highland Park etc (just north of Northwestern Univ). Since my Mom grew up in Chicago on the north side, my Grandparents lived in Chicago then Skokie, my 1st cousins lived in Park Ridge and went to Maine South, and I lived in Palatine for 3 years, and 3 of my college roommates were from the Chicago area, this movie has a special place in my heart.

The nurse at the door was a singing telegram. Singing telegrams were very popular for many decades. Their popularity started waning in the early 80's and are now obsolete. They were normally used on special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries and you could order a theme like medical or military and even strippers. Singing telegram companies were normally found in the bigger cities.

Such a great movie and loved your reactions! Most of us were right there with Chandra the first time we watched it, laughing and just sitting with these surprised and happy expressions when the most illogical things and near-misses happened on screen. I imagine Jordan was like that his first watch thru too. 😀 The soundtrack was great, and I still listen to my Yello CDs (they did the Oh Yeah song here) as well as Sigue Sigue Sputnik (who did the song behind Ferris' first long chat with the camera). I was a high school senior the year this came out and I couldn't relate to anything in this movie. This is obviously a bald faced lie as I was counted absent 52 days my first senior year as the city I lived in had a great parks system and going to the park sounded more fun than staying in school. Plus, with elements of Ferris, I also took a Junior Achievement business class where we ran a small business and our records were kept on the school computer. As I was voted the person to handle the records it was easy for me to get into the school records, change my dad's work number to the home phone number and the home phone number to a pay phone at the supermarket near the house. That way when they called dad's office to ask about me being absent they'd get the answering machine at home, and I could erase those messages before dad ever found them. 😀I was worse my second senior year. 😛Eighty days absent when I dropped out at the start of May. 😀 Kids, don't be me in school. 😛 Seriously. Anyhow, the movie Some Kind of Wonderful is another great 80s feel good movie with another excellent soundtrack, and I identify more with Duncan in that movie than I do with anyone in Ferris Bueller. Also, another fun note, the man and woman who played Ferris' parents apparently developed a relationship during this movie and married in real life. 😀

You think that you could not bluff but it is MUCH easier than you think. I have had the police looking for me to question me when I was young and I walked up to their car, talked to them and helped them search for me. It is actually very easy to mess with people like that. (and kinda fun)

I saw this film in the theater when it was out (and direct address was a thrilling breaking of rules - hadn't been overplayed yet at that point). Most of the audience had filed out, but a few of us were still in the auditorium heading for the door, the lights were already up, and as a nice treat for staying all the way to the end (which as a movie nerd I always did), Ferris came out in his robe and scolded us for still being there. That got a laugh from those of us still there to see and hear it, and felt all the more special that it was "just for us," missed by the majority of folks who had already left. A truly magical movie, and Cameron's arc is super meaningful and powerful - how to stand up to an unloving parent - but the "sugar" of Ferris' fun adventure totally sneaks it in under our radar. (Fascinating that the real villain - Cameron's dad - is never seen, though I personally believe that when Cameron does that adult-male voice on the phone with Rooney, we're hearing him do an impression of his father.) Thanks for watching it, you guys, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I don't know if this was the first movie to have a post-credits scene, but this movie and Airplane! were the first movies I ever saw that included a post-credits scene. If you haven't seen it yet, Wargames is another classic 80s Matthew Broderick movie.

I was born in '71 & was blessed to see this & most other John Hughes movies when they hit the big screen. "Sixteen Candles" is my favorite. Coming up on 53 years now, if I were stranded on a deserted isle & given the choice of only 2 box-sets for rest of my days they'd be Stanley Kubrick & John Hughes. He wrote original "Vacation" & stand out comedy classic, Micheal Keaton led "Mr Mom" before he became a director. He was a voice for the 80's teen. See ya! ✌️🌎❤️

I do think Mel Brooks did it years ago in his films too, just not as much. You guys didn't recognize a young Charlie Sheen in the police station that Feris' sister is flirting with?😉 "Oh Yeah" is on my Pandora playlist at home. The bass is GREAT!
