It's true that Imai animated pretty much all of the most memorable scenes of classic Attack On Titan that would come to your mind. But the old show wasn't carried by just him, they had a dream team working on this. Legendary director Tetsuro Araki, legendary composer Hiroyuki Sawano, they outsourced the amazing background art to a studio (I forgot the name). Regardless of who did it and how much time they had, the animation was great before and it's worse now.

Like how Araki made seasons 1-3 feel like high school of the dead with an apocalyptic feeling(especially in season 1) while Hayashi wanted a more deep tone to the story since it was more about war. I also think that the art like cgi titans was first done to save time but when it came to parts 2 and 3, the team thought that it would be better to improve it and keep it consistent like how they did dorohedoro

I get your point. CGI is evil right? But if it's done right, it can save your workers from hand drawing til their death but cannot deliver on time. Small reminder: the manga was finished like a year or so. Without MAPPA it may take another year or 2 to deliver if they stuck with WIT. The amount of leaked content that anime watchers would be exposed to will be a lot. Production wise, WIT did the right thing to quit and MAPPA did the good thing to pick it up and finish it. The hate they get is underserved.

Of course they had extra time to spend on animating this couple of minutes lmao meanwhile season 4 has a war in the Middle East, attack on a city, and Levi vs Zeke, then they take a break and we have a huge battle in shiganshina for like half the season, then a large battle at the port and then of course the specials have one of the largest scale massacres and battles in anime history lmao. Yet they still delivered high quality for the most part to us, especially the two specials they took a half normal amount of time to work on.
