Julie, this is the first time I've seen you sneaking around your own home/estate and whispering while hidden in a baseball cap to remain incognito while visitors are touring just feet away😂...you're so focused on keeping up your mission to share the history! So funny. ❤ I loved everything about this video. Regarding military uniforms (across most countries, and over time) and as a currently serving senior leader - soldiers, sailors, airmen & marines have a battlefied "field" uniform, a "garrison" uniform (you could say office, but we never do), a "dress" uniform, and for many - a "cermonial" uniform (and some have more, depending on their role and rank.) You pulled varios pieces from that array, worn in that era. Its constantly changing. Based on how well your family has archived and saved the Montagu history, I'm sure there's a box somewhere in your house that has awards/medals that go on each uniform. (Maybe in those upstairs rooms that you store vintage Mapperton items, or overflow, that you showed a couple of years ago..the one room had all the old phones in it on so on.) I prize my medals above all, it would be highly unusual for a military person to throw away their commendations and other such regalia ...maybe you can offer a reward for anyone that can find the box/boxes. (Each uniforn has its own medals, which are more formal depending on the uniform type - the composition varies, they are not the same on each uniform).

@mappertonlive, I know what the “military clothing” is found inside the box. I consider myself to be learned and an expert on this. As I have 2 full sets myself, the most recent one I just received a couple weeks ago once belonged to Norman Dugdale of Dutton Manor. What you have is a full set of court dress. Made in a deep midnight blue velvet, you would order these from a bespoke suit maker such as Ede and Ravenscroft, Henry Poole etc. This dress was for gentlemen who were invited to attend court and meet the sovereign of the day, if it’s dated 1936 likely for court with George V. The buttons are cut steel a reminder of the Georgian period and the sword is cut steel as well it seems as though yours is in need of a little repair gluing the chape and throat to the top and bottom of the leather scabbard. I use dubbin for feeding leather and it will become supple again even if it’s stiff, good for the patent leather court shoes as well. For cleaning the uniform it is important that water not be used directly onto the uniform as it will felt the fabric. It just needs a good brushing with a suit or clothing brush. If you hang it up properly the wrinkles will go away naturally and I’ve been told by Keith Levett of Henry Poole that you can steam these over a boiling kettle if need be to get out the wrinkles. But be careful not to get it wet. From what I see that is in that case is in order of appearance on camera: a walking stick, a walking stick perhaps military, a military swagger stick, a cut steel court sword to go with the court uniform, velvet court coat in the new style, court shoes, Indian military knife scabbard frog and belt, velvet cut steel sword frog and belt, silk court stockings, possible black silk garters, not sure, those are the metal scabbard mounts for the cut steel sword, bow tie or garter, part of a scabbard for a naval saber, rabbit fur court cocked hat, evening white silk waistcoat for court dress with cut steel buttons, velvet court waistcoat, cloth breeches I’m not sure what these are doing here but possibly legal breeches, velvet court breeches. All contained in the original Japanned tin case. I’m currently working on court dress content for my KZbin channel and I will dive in depth about court dress. A great source of info is “dress and insignia worn at his majesty’s court” a pdf version is available online at internet archive, physical copies are available as well. You have a beautiful set of court dress and an even more beautiful house and story, take care of them. -Jake

Rather than rubbing the fabric with the dry sponges, I'd use a small hand vacuum with the nozzle at least a couple inches away from the items at all times, with a piece of nylon stocking or similar fabric stretched over it and secured with a rubber band. That only sucks up very tiny particles into the machine, without rubbing anything loose that is not already unattached. If you happen to suck up anything (larger than dust) that you want, it is easily saved when you turn off the vacuum.

Oh my, the hinges on that wardrobe are stunning. Thank you so much Countess for allowing us to see the furniture and talk about Alice Nutter. When my granddaughter and I were doing ancestry, we found out that one of our ancestors was hung as a witch in Salem Massachusetts. Luke the piece on the land was fascinating. What a Grand episode! So much History to be found without leaving home. To find the Eighth Earl’s Uniform and waistcoats, the sheaths for the weapons as well as the ‘form’ for his hat! The Countess sharing her family history and furnishings of her natal forebears is fascinating and the Old Rectory, wow! My former husband used to say I was “a sucker for an old house!” We lived in extreme North Florida, in what was an Agrigrarian, sparsely populated County. There were some old(for us) homes scattered about that I would ask to be driven past, frequently. Having Tom explain the History of the land is interesting to me, as well. Had I continued my Education after High School, I’d have studied History, I’ve always been ‘drawn’ to it. I can’t wait to see all that is happening at Mapperton.

So many wonderful family treasures to see and discover. Love the dragon chair!! My youngest daughter has been in love with dragons since she was tiny 😊. We have just begun getting family furniture and treasures from my husband's family, because his cousin is downsizing. Nothing as old and beautiful as what the Countess has, but very meaningful to us.I also have the brass bell from my grandparents barge, circa the early 20th century. Knowing where you come from and being able to pass it down, is a beautiful gift. I love the stories that Luke's mother has with those furniture pieces.
