I understand why Julie says one might not think of orchids. Most people are only familiar with the exotic varieties that are imported from far away. They don't know that there are local species. This is just as true here in Canada as I expect it is in the UK. Bringing in beaver! Brilliant! There are few animals that have such a large impact on the environment. We have seen it happen just down the road from us. Beaver moved in and are "rewilding" a local ball field, much to the dismay of the city. I love to see the increased diversity of wildlife the area now attracts.

Please just keep saying whatever you're thinking and don't worry about 'getting something wrong' - there's a reason your unplanned video went viral and is the only one thus far to do so 🙂 KZbin is all about being real and informal, aka 'relatable'! Oh dear, if you do attract a family of beavers, please make sure they can’t get at ANY of the trees you care about. We have plenty of beavers here and they are VERY busy animals as far as going at trees, and unfurtunately won’t think twice about ruining an old fruit tree very close to a house in a garden or damage a three hundred yearold oak in parkland, so take careful precautions! Seen much sadness when people are too slow to take action. They are lovely creatures though, and we have areas where the municipal services make felled trees into lovely log benches to sit on around the shore or in the woods. Beautiful project you are embarking on with rewilding! ❤️

It's wonderful to see more & more people becoming involved in restoring & preserving wilderness instead of hewing to the idea that a piece of land is worthless if it's neither paved over nor growing a cash crop...! I got a bit curious & did some quick online research, and discovered that there are also "twayblade" orchids here on my side of The Pond, although many are endangered species. As something of a language geek, I also enjoyed that name's link to older forms of English and related languages -- for example, in modern Dutch the word for "two" (twee) is pronounced very much the same way.

Why are beaver being considered for repopulating Mapperton? Beaver were reintroduced to the American West and it was found to benefit thwarting erosion especially where the spring thaw would override the riverbanks and plantlife roots would have nothing to hold when the dryer weather came round? The beaver dams created would enable higher land away from the riverbanks provide for water that would keep deep root plants survive year round.

So do pigs or boar what we call them here. Had both naturally on some acreage I had and I'd be curious why starting with two most destructive species especially when will also be a touristy area. Maybe their "pigs"won't be aggressive as here they will block a vehicle on a rural road and not move plus charge at people. Both would be my last choice as wire mesh won't stop them but best of luck and will be interesting.
