Julie! Your fellow American - me- was invited there, and I took my mother! ( I am an alum of what was then The Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture). It is now, of course, a part of the King's Trust. Our reunion was there. Mama and I sailed from NYC on the QE2. I introduced my mother to him after bobbing properly. I also said, "I brought my mum over on your Mum's ship!" he laughed immediately! And mentioned it several times the rest of the day! I am indebted to him forever for gathering architectural artisans I could have spent my whole life seeking access to one! I am beyond grateful! I wish I was there with you!!!

I agree. Truly wonderful and thanks J for the recipe! Of course HighGrove now belongs to Prince William since his father became King, the King inherited HLMTQ Duchy of Lancaster and Prince William, the new Prince of Wales, inherited the Duchy of Cornwall, of which HighGrove belongs: "As the property is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, control of the House was transferred to Prince William, The Prince of Wales, when his father acceded to the throne and PW became the new Duke of Cornwall on 8 September 2022. The King rents the house from the Duchy when he wishes to stay to use as a country residence" This is very rare though because of course he has Balmoral and Sandringham, Windsor (though does not use it currently) and of course lives in Clarence House.

I’m American and I make my mac ‘n cheese from scratch! Use Cabot Extra Sharp Vermont Cheddar. Get whole milk, eggs, salt & pepper, elbow macaroni. In a casserole dish (I use my mom’s old Corning Ware white dish with the blue flower) put layers of cheese between the boiled macaroni, with a layer of cheese on top. Pour in the milk, eggs, salt & pepper mixture until it reaches the top of the dish. Bake. It’s delicious.

Here’s a lesson for those of you thinking of buying old houses, especially in areas that have serious winters….don’t strip varnish in January. When stripping varnish you need ventilation, aka open windows. The house I grew up in was built in 1907 (I know, young by European standards), but it had period varnish in it that gets sticky when it’s hot and humid in the summer. For some unknown reason, my parents decided to strip the varnish in January, and of course it was a bitterly cold Minnesota winter. Good times.

I like the traditional Mac n cheese that Ina Garten or Martha Stewart make. Their recipes are very similar. Both use freshly grated extra sharp cheddar, Gruyère cheese and Nutmeg. Ina puts sliced tomatoes under the bread crumbs(I omit the tomatoes) For a Southern twist on the dish I’ll use either Paula Deen’s or Dolly Parton’s recipe. Yummy🤤 Thank you for the adventure to Highgrove! The house is amazing and the gifts and goodies are beautiful👍🏻🙂

Josie's mac & cheese sounds brilliant. I want to try mixing 2 parts good quality old cheddar, 1 part gruyere, and 1 part feta. The problem, of course, is the gruyere, because the flavour varies with age, but I think the feta would balance it out, and you could skip adding salt, depending on your gruyere. My problem is I can't decide what fat content I want for my dairy. It's a work in progress, and I'm so glad to hear it is for other people!

Loved this video! As far as scones go, I'm a jam first gal (I like the sweetness of the jam better). As far as Highgrove goes, it was lovely. Its a shame that you couldn't spend more time in the gardens, it was certainly a day for it! So fortuitous for you to meet Charlie & Josie! I've been following her since her early London days. You definitely need to try her mac n cheese, it's Epic!! You'll not regret making her recipe, and the seasonal twists to the ingredients she does is inspired! They also have a very lovely older home. I'd love to see videos of a group of old home homeowners get together & discussing the pros & cons of it like someone suggested in the video (don't know who said it first). That would be both fun & informative. Maybe even do a series & have each successive video at a different home? Well, my favorite cheese in mac n cheese is Cabot Extra Sharp cheddar (from Vermont). I never made it with more than one cheese until I found Josie's recipe. WOW, what an upgrade! Julie, thanks again for the lovely video. Love from Virginia!

Yup! Cabot Extra Sharp Vermont Cheddar. Whole milk, eggs, salt & pepper, elbow macaroni. In a casserole dish, layer the macaroni and cheese, with a layer of cheese on top. Pour the milk & egg mixture into the dish to the top. Bake and eat. It’s delicious!

You've got me interested in merchandise now. What a beautiful display. The store reminds me of a much bigger version of the old Christmas store in back of the Pancake House in McCall Idaho.

I love my Mac and Cheese that I make. I use 5 cheeses. I use Asiago, parmesan, mild cheddar, mozzarella, and ghouda. Once my noodles are done(make sure to save some pasta water for the sauce), I add the harder cheeses first then the softer cheeses. I blend them all with the noodles and butter. If it is too thick I add a little pasta water to even it out a bit. I top it with a mixture of Panko bread crumbs, butter, garlic, pepper. No need for salt as the cheeses have plenty. Then just back until golden and bubbly.

I add broccoli, onion, garlic and breadcrumbs on top. Also a dash of Mustard and a sliced tomato on top for garnish. If you ever find Norwegian goat cheese..called SKI QUEEN.. use it with the sharpest cheddar you can find. 😊
