The show “Girlfriends” was so ahead of its time. One of the best written, produced and acted show ever. It was bougie, yet real and playful. I was a young woman in my mid 20s when the show came out and it was beautiful seeing professional black women with everyday struggles that we could all relate to. I saw a piece of myself in each of the characters. Last but not least the fashion was second to known. Those ladies wardrobes are still very much fashionable to this day! Joan was the first person that I ever saw rock a red bottom. She was rocking them when know one knew what a Christian louboutin was. The show was just phenomenal....hands down the GOAT!

I also love how all 4 ladies we’re different complexions and they touched on Toni colorism issues. You couldn’t help but see yourself in each character. They were all so diverse for black women from complexion, social class, and relationships. With all the differences their friendship was what they had in common. Too many people today only what friends like them. I like they even if Lynn or Maya was not on their level financially she was still there friend. ❤️

Girlfriends was the first show to let black ppl just 'be'. They were layered, flawed, imperfect, and didn't figure everything out in half an hour. Black people finally got to be real people on this show. Sooo ahead of it's time.

Yes! I think that's why so many people enjoyed it. Black people are not one-dimensional, and Mara's shows always display that. Even with The Game which wasn't as serious, you saw that in multiple characters, and it was evident in Being Mary Jane as well.

Everybody's forgetting about Half n Half staring Essence Atkins and Rachel True. Hopefully Kelsey can also bring it back. It was the original spinoff BEFORE the Game that also got canceled abruptly without proper closure.

@@stacieraexoxo4562 I remember that show. Idk it was a spinoff, but at the end of the day, it didn't resonate the same way as girlfriends or the game. These shows were like real dramedies. We saw characters have really high highs and really low lows, like real life. Salute to Mara!
@stacieraexoxo45624 жыл бұрын
@@brandonbrown1916 with all due respect, you're not a woman. The show focused on how Black families can be higher educated who are able to live well and function in elite circles. It also focused on how children from divorced parents end up with financial struggles being raised by a female single parent. Both Mona and her mother had college degrees but it was a huge struggle to continue to make ends meet whilst living without a father in the home or supporting husband and competing with your step mother/ex wife and half sibling for attention.

Everybody's forgetting about Half n Half staring Essence Atkins and Rachel True. Hopefully Kelsey can also bring it back. It was the original spinoff BEFORE the Game that also got canceled abruptly without proper closure.

Its crazy how some of the people in these comments can bring up her husband who was accused of something that was unfounded. Can we just learn how to celebrate individuals. That was not her and she is a casualty in all that. She was the one who brought him along. Let's celebrate what they created and we know people accuse people of stuff everyday when they mad. Sorry. Their work has represented us well. The Game was a good one too.. Celebrate Success.

I honestly dont think alot of blacks, the women in particular, do not know how nor want to "celebrate individuals." Those women in a hurry to post such comments are and just like the thousands of women that ask daily before even saying "hello" or introducing themselves "is that all your hair" and when you answer "yes, all of it" they shoot you a piercing look of disappointment🥴 and jealousy 🤢.
