The Maramures Village Museum was inaugurated in 1981 as outdoor part of the Maramures Museum in Sighetu Marmatiei. The project of this village-museum, in development, has been realized since 1972 and until the inauguration in 1981, more than 30 traditional houses have been dismantled, restored and reassembled, as well as other representative buildings in Maramures, often with the furniture, original items and accessories. The houses and the annexes are grouped by ethnographic sub-areas, along with the houses of the Romanians being brought also three representative houses for other ethnic groups (Hungarian, Ukrainian, Jewish). All the village houses are made exclusively of wood (the civilization of wood) and reconstruct the architectural evolution throughout the 17-19 centuries. The former owners of these houses are known, many of whom are nobility families descending (documented) in the history of Maramures until the 14th century.
