marantz 1072 potmeter cleaning, review, soundtest

Marantz 1072 is often see on ebay and the price is about the same as they ask for the 1060 and 1090.... Is this a good sounding amp? Watch the video and find out...

I’ve owned this model amplifier since new. I think I purchased it in 1977. Until recently it’s been in daily use and has been a reliable ‘work horse’. I’ve never had an issue with the sound - so am perplexed about the critical review. Perhaps it comes down to what you’re used to? I’m now using a new ( expensive) Denon amplifier with upgraded speakers. Sounds great but the Marantz 1072 still sounds pretty good by comparison. My thoughts to anyone considering this vintage amp is to draw your own conclusion and not write this amp off as junk. It’s not.

In 1979 I purchased a Hitachi SR-804 receiver from tech hifi in NYC. When it was obvious that they wouldn't get it in for at least two weeks the store gave me a "loner". THAT will never happen today! I picked out a Marantz 1090 integrated amp. Think it was 45wpc but it sounded way more powerful. Loved that "industrial" look and smooth feel to the controls. Only used it for three weeks but I was quite impressed with Marantz quality.

This is a very simple basic amplifier, however I've noticed that author of this film had LOUDNESS activated, so maybe it was the main reason why bass and treble were so ugly for user. The 1090 amp has +/-5V higher power supply than 1072 (so slightly more power) and one transistor in each channel added (2 "current mirrors" instead of 2 resistors) and also third MID tone regulator plus rotary switch that allows to disable this sophisticated and often unnecessary tone regulator, so it can have clearer sound than 1072. BTW: 1072 model has 36W of output power per channel, but only according to some weird FTC american standard. According to DIN (German/European standard) it has 50W on 8ohms and 77W on 4 ohms per channel (data from Service Manual) with THD and IMD =< 0,05%.

Testing the sound of an amplifier with a smartphone is not a good sound test. And more, these aged amps need a total refurbishing to sound at their best: changing all electrolytic capacitors, correct idle current regulation with a scope , etc.

Ben helemaal akkoord met jou ! Een goede 1060 speelt dit speelgoed zo van de kaart ,. Maar als je deze versterker op de kop kunt tikken voor een tientje dan kan je het chassis gebruiken voor een leuke zelfbouw .

Your father’s amp is not junk. Don’t believe the negative review. I’ve owned a Marantz 1072 from new since 1977. It’s a solid, reliable and good performer. It will give you years of musical enjoyment. Best wishes.

Hi! I like all your stuff.Why not use compressed air before spraying?And you have experience with pure alcohol to clean?I use a Nokia n97 phone as player.Sounds the best on my shure se-535 earbuds.I use those as reference of quality speakers. Can you once pick up a Philips 900 series amp & *50 cd player to review?I'm waiting to hear your opinion vs the Sony es series. You have some experience with B&O from the early 70's?I own a Beomaster 300 receiver what is a ugly looking but dreaming quiet receiver you should review to make your channel more complete. completely agree with your conclusion: this is not worthy of the name Marantz. It has zero dynamic range, bass and treble both completely bland and untrue to the brand history. No midtones either it's all out of balance. I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

If you play a cd on a quality cd player it will sound much better than that little player you are trying to get sound from these things are made as a bad joke for audio players cheap is garbage in audio , It is like going to a toy store and buying a plastic gun instead of a real gun made from metal seriously , go to audio store listen to a $10.000 dollar stereo system you will hear good audio . Buy Yourself an Air Compressor for cleaning Audio equiptment its much easier than brushing those capasitors and diodes you can damage them if you move them .
