Hi Tony. Thank you for fun vid to watch. I remembered my friends who had this boasted how smooth the flywheel was at tuning the radio stations and the luxurious feel the Marantz had. Another buddy who enjoyed taking apart old TV sets (before digital) used to tell me, before he unbuttoned anything would placed unit in a large garbage bag and fill with roach spray tied a knot and leave alone for a month !!! Once you get those critters running around your house, gosh !!! All those face plates you redo with the LED have a warm blue glow that looks beautiful in a dark living room. I can attest to that and never enjoyed the tuner more !! Many many thanks again.

Four years ago I restored a 'doomed' amplifier, a large Technics SU-8099. A thick coat of sticky cigarette tar & dust covered each and every component. It was like a blanket and it smelled bad. I tried several cleaning products, like alcohol and spirits, which did not work. One could not even see the type of component nor read their values. Finally I applied a product to clean BBQ and oven gear. Its commercial name in Belgium is "BREF". I guess it is available in the US by the name of 'Easy Off'. It's a white foamy spray. I removed the PCB's and sprayed them with the foam while gently scrubbing with a paint brush to get the foam in every little corner. I saw how the foam was bubbling, releasing the tar and gunk until it turned into a brown slurry. I let it do it's job for about five minutes. Then I rinsed the boards with lukewarm water and dried them with paper towels and a hair dryer. The boards looked brand new. The oven cleaner did not attack the silk screen, nor the component's color codes. After I took care about all the PCB's and the chassis that nasty smell was gone. I should warn though not to apply this product on mechanical components like trim pots, switches and relays.

Same here, BREF works perfectly to remove nicotine, dirt and grime while leaving sensitive stuff (that i would not dare to touch with thinner) alone and its fumes aren't nearly as bad (smelly) as thinner.

@@TimHaunFishing You have to be careful around tuning coils and anything that could hold water for a while. Water alone does not destroy electronics. Powering them on wet is problematic. So using water from a clean source, drying the PCBs off gently but thoroughly, maybe leaving them on the heater to dry for a few hours/days does not generally pose a problem.

I found a 2238 in the trash a couple of days ago and finally got the chance to test it today, it works. Display fuses are burnt, selector knob is slightly bent and the (R) phono input is half smushed.

Hey, great work, specially the input selector repair. I own a 2230B. As far as I remember, the stereo indicator light turns off in aux mode when the mono button is pressed. So, it's working normally. I enjoyed your explanation on how to test the different parts of the receiver. Thanks for sharing!

Actually not too surprised that it performed in its crusty form. These Marantz units from the 70’s hold up almost as well as McIntosh gear. I have a recapped 2226 that I got for $330. These things sound great!

My mom ended up with this model after my parents divorced. She didn't use it much and it became mine, at the age of 14. Later on I grew up and moved out and yada-yada-yada, I just located it yesterday, after about 25 years. I'm stoked to get it cleaned up and see if it still works.

Very interesting video, Thanks for showing these procedures. I have 1530 Wich FM/AM output is very low. Meaning that you have to turn all the volume up to hear a station. Do you have any recommendations on how to troubleshoot that? I do have some experience with electronics but no oscilloscope or signal generator.

The STEREO indicator light is supposed to be on when in Aux or Tape. It will turn off if you select Mono and when the FM is not receiving a stereo signal.

@Marcos Sakaguti - Indeed. I was going to mention this about the STEREO light, and then I found your comment. It's now been almost 4 years since this video was put up. I don't know how the YT algorithms work but I enjoy what they pick for me. Love the video Tony. I had a 1973 2245 and the balance control was a knob and not a slider ( sliders seemed to show up in the B models and the higher wattage (2275, 2325) models. This 2238 of yours seems to be unique).

The Japanese built Marantz receivers typically have the stereo indicator ON with high level sources unless mono is selected. Only in FM mode obviously it turns OFF in mono reception. This based on 35 years servicing them, 20 years as a warranty service center for Marantz. I have less experience on the American ones so can't say for sure about those.

It would be more helpful if you would show how you cleaned up the inside of the receiver and show you recapping each of the components. Your video is good but for us that are trying to learn how to do the restoration, we need a little more guidance. Keep up the good work. I'm only making a suggestion.

I'm watching this video to kind of find out how much is involved in rebuilding this same unit. I was gifted this same unit by my mother and it is near and dear to her heart. It has a host of issues, the left channel is out, all of the back lights are out except the stereo light which does exactly what yours does, while the FM tuner does not function at all. And the receiver was next to heavy smoking for more about a decade. I may decide to have it professionally done. I have extensive electronics and computer repair experiences as well as micro soldering, but I am in a totally different realm when it comes to caps, pots, resistors and other components actually on the PCB. How hard is the learning curve for this?

Hey there Tony , I just found your channel and bought a Marantz MR255 , I would like to Restore my self with very little Electronic knowledge, However I have noticed the FM side runs alot cooler than the AUX. side using my C.D player The transistors between heat sink i suspect are the problem, also trying to find the common caps,ect to replace and cross over part numbers with out removing and waiting for correct parts to be replaced is somewhat difficult. Do you have a running list of all caps,ect for this project?Any info at this point would be great

Hello Tony. I have a Marantz 2238, but when I turn on the amplifier, I get a humming sound from the speakers. Why can it do this? It does this even when the turntable is not connected.

Maybe you or one of your commenters could lead me in the right direction in repairing my 2235b. I can turn the volume up about 1/3 and it sounds good from both speakers but if I turn the volume up past 1/3 the relay trips off. The DC voltage on the speaker terminals are good (less than 4 mv). Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can check? Thanks..

I would take that thing outside, and take an air hose an blast the heck out of it..being careful of what you clean..unreal. Is it true you can hose down(water) that entire board, and it will not hurt it, like computer boards?

I just picked up a 2230 a couple days ago for $20, its not as crusty as this 2238... but it's close. the guy said he tried everything but he just couldn't get it to work- “the lights come on, but no one is home.” well clearly he didn't try EVERYTHING, like connecting the main in/pre-out jacks.

I suppose Tony removed the PCB's from the chassis prior to attacking it with the Dremel.

I use a very small conical wire brush for the problem areas of the chassis. They usually don't lose many, if any, of the wires. When working close to a board that isn't easily removed, I cover it with paper and blue painters tape (it peels off easily and doesn't leave goo all over the board). Then a quick (but careful) vacuum and all is well!

There are many techniques to spraying a cat in heat. 1. Randomly run up to the "cat in heat" at different points in the day and just hose the little bastard down. That way the cat never knows when it's coming. 2. Just spray whenever the "cat in heat" starts acting up. This way it learns its lesson (boring). 3. Hide like Ramboo, all camouflage'd up n shit in the same place every time and spray every time it comes around the corner. This keeps the "cat in heat" away from a certain location. 4. Well the list just keeps going on. I wonder what method of "spraying the cat in heat" that you used on this project.

I sprayed the transformer end bells "like a cat in heat". Anyone that has had the unfortunate experience of having stray cats in the neighborhood will understand the analogy. When they are in heat, they will "spray" to mark their territory. It ain't pretty!! Just having some fun!! Thanks for watching :)

Looks like a nice job. Don't know if you know or anybody can tell me this company can't find out the name? I think they're American but they might be Canadian, they do I think only amplifiers, preamps and power amps, solid state and valve. You can buy them pre assembled or as a kit? I member at the time they got very good reviews they seem very good quality at a really affordable price! Anybody got any ideas!! I think their motto was that you can have a high end amplifier at an affordable price.

Another one that was very popular for a while was Velleman. They made both stereo and monoblock versions of their amps that used EL34 and KT88 tubes. You could get them in kit form or pre-built. Never heard one, but a lot of electronics stores sold them. I don't know if Velleman still makes them, but they still make small electronic kits. I have this same receiver in mint condition with original wood and I’m trying to decide if I should get it fully recapped or hold out for a higher end model marantz. What do you think? is this model a keeper or should I look for something else? How does this model sound quality compared to the others? And is the phono pre amp on the 2238 a good one?

MY 2220B - THE STEREO LIGHT STAYS ON IN ALL OTHER MODES. had TROUBLE W FM multiplex. ADJUSTED R304 - and it's touchy - but that worked - i think it's supposed to stay on in all other discreet modes. Still more to do but - I wouldn't worry about it on the other modes. it's a little "glitz" I'm a noob tho' ;-)
