Regarding Ocean acidification, it can be understood better in this way- Step 1- Atmospheric & dissolved CO2 from emissions reacts with water to form carbonic acid CO2 + H2O -> H2CO3 Step 2- Since carbonic acid is weak, it dissociates to form bicarbonate anion and release hydrogen cation H2CO3 -> HCO3(-) + H(+) Step 3- Hydrogen cation reacts with carbonate anion to again form bicarbonate anion and release hydrogen cation 2H(+) + CO3(2-) -> HCO3(-) + H(+) Thus carbonate concentration decreases while hydrogen ion concentration goes up, leading to acidification.and softening of shells of marine animals.
