The Confederate States Of America ceased to exist at the conclusion of the U.S. Civil War in 1865. It did not purchase ships from Britain in 1871.

Yes you are right. I checked it up and noted "Britain paid the U.S. $15 million in 1871" for the damage they had done (Jones, 2002; p. 225). Sorry for the mistake.

And the British remained neutral during the war, sent arms to The United States and made it possible to transport in to the south. Since the south supported slavery the U.K. never recognized it. Ships built for the south were built under the table.

@smooth_sundaes5172

@@danceswithcritters Actually they did, the South used British ports for their commerce raiders and blockade runners. I have Confederate money aquired from visiting ships and passed down through the family. What ever Britains "official" position was, no doubt a lot of money was being made supplying arms. Indeed, many (if not most) Bowie knives were made in Sheffield England. It has to be said that my mother country has often had its feet several camps and at the height of the Victorian Empire was as Machiavellian as any other.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland remained officially neutral throughout the American Civil War (1861-1865). It legally recognised the belligerent status of the Confederate States of America (CSA) but never recognised it as a nation and neither signed a treaty with it nor ever exchanged ambassadors

There was never an “invasion of Fort Sumter”. The Fort was bombarded by the Confederates as they first action of the war and the Union General surrendered. The Union made a weak and completely unsuccessful attempt to attack the fort with a small band of men much later in the war, with most of the attackers captured. The fort was abandoned by the Confederates when Charleston was evacuated as Sherman approached. Nothing even remotely resembling an “invasion” ever occurred.

I'd like to take a little exception to the one about "which side did Great Britain side with in the American Civil War?" It's true that the British government (or at least their Prime Minister and Foreign Minister) and its aristocratic classes were enthusiastically pro-Confederate. But the poor and working classes, which made up the overwhelming majority of the population hated slavery and were just as strongly pro-Union. They didn't have much influence on the government because they didn't have the ballot. But they had the brick.

Although the British wanted cotton from the Confederacy, they never outright supported them or recognized them. This question's answer should be neither. The Confederacy was attempting to score a big victory by attacking Pennsylvania in 1863, which led to their ultimate defeat after losing at Gettysburg. The Confederacy hoped by winning on that campaign that it would lead to Britain recognizing them as an independent nation.

One additional comment. After the American Civil War, the Union used Englad and got reparations for England’s sale of ships to the Confederacy. The C.S.A. Alabama was one such ship. So, it seems that England leaned heavily enough on the Confederat side to warrant a suit against their government.
@roberthughes9856
@roberthughes9856 5 жыл бұрын
United Kingdom not England. Americans sue everybody for everything, the reparations were for damage caused by the warships although built by private companies. As the US traded with UK throughout the war, including buying. weapons, one can only assume if the CSA had won they would have sued, as well, for damage done by those weapons. The US was neutral for over two years in WWII but still sold arms to the British perhaps Berlin might sue for damages.

@Brian1949

I'd like to point out that Fort Sumter was not invaded, only blockaded by preventing supplies from reaching the garrison. The ship bringing food & ammunition was fired upon by shore batteries and forced to withdraw. A few days later the Union garrison had to evacuate. As far as the British support for the Confederacy, as already pointed out below, the year of conversion of the famous "Laird hulls" was 1862 and 1863, by 1871 the war was long over. Regards, Brian

The Mason-Dixon Line separated slave states from free states before the Civil War but was not the border between the Confederacy and the Union. Maryland, just south of the line, was a slave state but did not secede. Napoleon was also defeated in Russia. The question should have asked what was the final defeat.
