I just started playing wow this season and I am now up to tanking 20's. The biggest issue for tanks is that the beginning stages are so toxic. The 14-15 range, or KSM range, is the worst. DPS players think they are way better than they are and never take accountability at this level. They butt pull multiple times, pull extra things intentionally because they think the pull is too small or you take a second to figure out the route, and never interrupt. They blame the tank for not getting aggro quick enough on the extra pull and blame healers for not getting healed for their decisions/errors. God forbid the tank actually makes a mistake. You will get blasted, called trash, and people will shut down and quit. It is weird, when I tank a 20 and die, even when it was 100% my fault, no one blames me or complains or tells me I am bad. They just keep pushing on like nothing happened.

As a healer main of 18 years, whenever someone tries to trash talk my tanks, i always post my macro saying.. "look, im am the healer here, your life is in MY hands, you can either stop dogging on me and the tank, or you will learn what happens when i magically ignore you exist." Now in 20s its very different, had dps actually own up to mistakes, but on my baby healers (+2-15) i have to basically send off that macro once or twice a day

Most dungeons are linear with a few exceptions but I started playing WoW for the first time 2 months ago and I chose tank. I just cleared my first 20 yesterday and I’ve been farming 18s. It really doesn’t take that long if you just put in the time doing 8-9s until you’re comfortable to move up.

​@@The0nlyyit doesn't matter how linear a dungeon is what matters is the route through the mobs. Heaven forbid you pull a mob pack that didn't need pulled. This is especially true in m+. If you pull too many mobs(even if you can handle them just fine) people will through hate at you. Sometimes you even get someone so unhinged that they make the rest of the run miserable or even disband group.

I was a DK Tank when I used to play and was a big fan of it. When I came back to the game I tried picking up tanking again but no longer enjoyed it. It had nothing to do with the actual tanking itself, but more so with the mindset change in the community. Even outside of M+ the pace everyone wants to go at feels accelerated (I imagine because of M+) so now the role of tank feels less about tanking and more about pace setting to me.

you are the pace setter, a good quick tank makes EVERYTHING better. DK is not the best to try and do that with, because they have the best chance of being one shot in higher keys do to bone shield maybe not being up and not enough runic power for Deathstrike. Paladin or DH are the strongest tanks in the game right now with the least amount of getting one shot potential. DH is straight God mode

@@DK-pj4wt See you're stuck in M+ mindset... I'm talking about how that M+ mindset has infested all group content. Before there was a timer people weren't rushing through everything, groups would take a few seconds to talk before a boss or there would be a discussion about pulling half a room versus the whole room. Now even in modes with no timers the mindset seems to have shifted to "Ready? Go! Clear, leave group, back to LFG" My issue isn't with the mechanics of tanking themselves, its with the community mindset change in the pacing of content. Going quick only makes everything better when there's a timer at play. Rushing through group content takes away the social aspect of the group.

I tanked to 3.2k rio. But man, this game is hell for tanks and healers without a dedicated group. Pugs are really pain in the ass and even for me, who play this game since 2005, the reason to switch to dps. Dungeons are getting more and more complicated, mobs one shot people, absurd affixes, ppl who are boosted and dont know how to play, ruining your route by pulling random mobs, etc.. tanking anxiety is real and will be worse with this setup.

Fantastic video like always. I play all Tanks and have to say for me the main issue i got flammed is not playing the tank right, is mostly the way of pulling trash or finding a way. For a Tank it is very important to know the dungeon. Wich way ! Wich Trashgroups ! For me in new dungeons this is my struggle. I got a lot problems for pulling too much groups instead of skipping them. It doesn't matter here, if i survive or the group. For me the Tank is hard work to learning the dungeons AND your class. DDs just run in and run after the leader, wich is the Tank. Healer on the other hand have there own problems with keeping us alive, making damage and decurse. I am always grateful for having a good healer with me. So my personal tip. Watch videos from other Tanks and learn the best ways through the dungeons. Have fun and don't give up.

Tanking is the only class i feel comfortable playing. Having a 3.5k VDH/Prot paly i would say the best way to learn is to go into a mythic with your own key alone. Yes you will brick it but practice pulling and seeing how long you can survive with certain defensives. Like learn to layer them for big incoming dmg instead of running in and just popping multiples at the say time, it isn't always necessary. Be creative in pulling don't just run in face first and get 1 shot, like with a my VDH if i want to pull 3-4 or even more mobs I may chain/flame sigil first 2 so they're not beating on me while I leap to go gather more just things like that. Or i may drop misery on a set go around grab others and chain the aggroed mobs to the mobs with misery just different things you can play around with. Also communicate your pulls to your group, I know people don't listen but if they get one shot for not listening that's on them. Also strafe towards your next mob so they're not hitting you in the back. Happy Tanking !!

I also do have my fair share of tanking anxiety. At least in keys I haven't timed yet. I always doubt if I'll be good enough to handle it. The thing is, if you're gonna tank you need to have the right mind set. It's okay to be frightened, but you gotta realise tanking is not only a spec, but also a role. And with that role comes knowing how to pull, knowing what to pull and knowing when to pull. It is a lot and that can make it scary. But as a tank you can't expect someone to hold your hand. Sometimes you gotta bluff yourself through it, take some risks but most of all, come prepared. Be the tank that you want to have in your party. And always realise it's a team game. As much as people need you as a tank, you need the rest of the group to play. Respect eachothers time and don't slack around. (nor jump into a pack without a defensive cooldown, unless you wanna see flame drink battery acid 😂)

i love your comment i agree with you %100, only thing i have to add was when i was starting out tanking i kinda had a mind set like that not knowing if im good enough to run a high key or something etc until a friend pushed me showing me i had what it takes to tank imo as a tank you wana push yourself to the limits see what you can handle. imo its the most rewarding feeling in the game a friend of mine has a motto i like "keys are keys, there will always be another key" as long as you learn something out of each run you do your going to advance your capabilities of tanking unfortunately ppl are toxic tho and tanking now a days requires a big back bone

When my guild got into Heroic in week 1 of amirdrassil as a warrior I got banged around, and as I had ~450 ilvl it was hard for me, especially that I didn't had a group to do +16's and up for gear. I got a message from raid leader that if I will keep dying (to 1 shots ofc) they will find a new tank. I hate that aproach, now I have almost all 95+ parses in Heroic and decent parses in our 2 week excursion into Mythic, but he it made me kinda not want to tank anymore.

Tanking is by far the easiest role in the game for me. Almost all of the higher performing players in my guild started tanking this season. Learning tanking routes is amazing for me, because it means I don't have to worry about being in some funky route some random tank might take.

I remember the first time I tried tanking. It was in TBC and I wanted to try a paladin Blood Elf 😅 back then I was a priest healer. My friend suggested to try tanking and I completely fell in love with my paladin and , after almost 17 years, I’m still playing it. Am I the best prot paladin in the world? Heck no, I’m not even in the middle lol, but I love it a lot. ANd when im not playing it, I only play tanks in WoW. 🗡️🛡️

This is why I am looking forward to S4 and the change to mythic, I can do the difficulty level that has enough of a challenge to learn tanking without the pressure of a timer. The timer is what kills it for me. Then you have the DPS who say "hurr durr, learn to tank" when it is THEM who fail at basic things like interrupts, etc.

As a tank main myself, It's definitely a leadership role and you control the pacing of the group. I like to learn and expirement with runs so it's my favorite role. Plus the fast queue times are nice.

How to avoid being scared when tanking especially in a random group: It all starts with Blizzard and what they do or don't do. You need survivability and sustainability and you also need huge aoe (more than single target) dps. Tanks currently have this formula and they have it right. You won't be a burden on the healer nor will you die and wipe the group causing a negative focus on you. You need a healer but you don't need to rely only on them. If you time your cooldowns correctly and don't pull like a 16 year old who's home alone, you'll do just fine. If you understand YOU (class/spec) and Blizzard does balancing right, everybody will have a fun experience. Now for healers this is an entirely different story. For the most part Blizzard has let them down and has been letting them down for some time. The proof is in the lack of healers in anything you do group wise online. They are not fun to play. They feel like they are always out of breath before they even get started and they are forced to do things they don't want to do. Blizzard has failed them tremendously. I would describe it as unconscious sabotage. Much like PVP, it's a dumpster fire so let's hope they read this and put in the necessary effort to fix it.

Tanks have to memorize quite a bit really. 16 different paths (or more?) and so forth. I will be trying to use Follower dungeons at least to learn the paths. Most everything else mentioned i can understand and practice to get better at. Thanks for the video!

I learned tanking on bdk this season and it’s pretty fun being immortal kinda. Just missing 2 portals 🎉 . Never used any kinda route addon or so. Just observed what ways other tanks see taking. I started as dps in s1 and then healing s2. Thank you for the video ❤

This is an amazing video but my tank anxiety comes from starting to play in BFA, so I don't know all the dungeons as well as the good routes. Getting lost, pulling the "wrong packs" and going bad routes makes me not do an instance without a friend watching my screen to coach me on pathing.

good video bro! for me as a long time player the rule is simple - if can tank then speck tank, if cannnot tank then heal role and the 4 dps speck are well...dps. solid points for all who fear the tank role and wanna try it were said in this video! and if any you dont know the special/mdi/world firsts routes just say at the start of the run: "we go pew pew m0 route" then... pew pew the dungeon! works for almost all dungeons even +20s. WOW needs more tanks! and healers!😖

This. This was the exact same advice that allowed me to enjoy League of Legends. As a tank, you are the leader and main face of the group. One of your dps doesn't like the way your trying to learn the dungeon, or practice some pulls and voices it vocally? Mute them. I promise you after that run, you probably won't see them again cuz its a big game and there are tons of dps out there. Just mute anybody causing you problems. Your here to play a game and have fun with your roll, don't let others dictate your fun.

The " you cannot die" is definately the scariest part. as a DPS you can die 10 time in a single key and the group goes on. Even as a healer, dying doesn't mean it's a wipe. Often time the group can finish the boss / pack without you. As a tank? if you die it's either a wipe, or a chaotic and highly inefficient kiting fest until you come back. And when you do come back, you don't have an AE taunt to get everything under control.

The main problem with tanking is the go go go mentality of a huge percentage of the player base. It doesn't matter how fast you go, that low dps, usually a mage, wants to pull ahead of you whilst being hard carried. You can chain pull but it's still not quick enough for that one person sitting at the bottom of Details. It stops at a decently high key level although it can still happen, it's like the idiot who is pulling thinks you want to fail the 24 timer. The other reason people don't want to tank is the flaming they get if they are not running the exact same route that one of the others thinks they should take, said rager then almost always rage quits and bricks the key.

alternatively, this mage is at the bottom of the DPS because the 20 second break tank like to take in low keys means mages lose their stacks, not only missing out on SKB (mini-combustion) but also not getting any CDR on the actual combustion, meaning they'll get 10-11 combustion over the dungeon instead of the 30-35 they should get with proper pulling.... and those combustion are likely low-value because of tiny pulls. In sums : they can barely do 20% of their potential because of pacing. Playing fire mage in low keys with inexperienced tanks is one of the most frustrating experience one can go through. Between the VDH/Ret paladin instantly AoE'ing all the fodder and tanks doing slow-mode baby pulls you start to wonder why the heck mages even exist.

In low keys those stacks won't make a shit of difference and if you read my post properly, I said, even when you are chain pulling, no one said anything about 20 second stops, hyperbole at it's finest. The group you sign up for should be about timing as fast as possible, that means not pulling 4 packs before letting the tank's CDs come off CD, not making the tank's job 5 times harder, trying to run around grabbing aggro because they have trigger happy idiots who are only looking at damage meters. I help out guildies that are trying to get gear on alts by queueing as tank for Lfr with them. Unfortunately I'm very over geared and very very rarely can the other tank take aggro from me outside of taunt even if im just trying to maintain mitigation (prot warrior), so i do feel a bit bad not really giving them a good learning experience. However I'm so overgeared i can solo tank the bosses. But again i wish they would buff tanks under a certain gear level so they can do fights as intended and get to learn the fights instead of feeling unneeded

Being a tank is too much responsibility. Many people dont like it because If you are a bad tank, you wont time a key. You need to know your own rotation, how to use and when your defensive spells, how to pull packs every single week as affixes are different every single time, what adds are doing and what classes are you having in your group. Too many stuff that tank needs to do and know thats why people are scared playing it. Also people are so toxic in pug, one mistake and they will blame you and leave.

I have a theory about this topic and I think people who have nature instinct to protect someone are good tanks, you need to have that something in yourself, that's why some people are more bold and better at tanking. Tanking since 2005. Never played as healer or dps. Got over 600 days of play time. Trick for tanking is : Always know your class & character capabilities so pull packs according to that. Do not fall to words like "PULL MOAR".

Best way to get into tanking from someone who has basically only tanked and healed in this game: heal first. Healing teaches you damage intake, CD usage and you will learn the dungeon routes eventually, doesn't take too long. I dunno, the DF dungeons are really bad when it comes to the route, those are kinda trickier, but they weren't as bad as BFA and SL dungeons, some of the BFA dungeons straight up had no route, some of them were Build a Path and really only the sweats like the Build a Path stuff, that crap sucks in PUGs because no coms. Entry for tanking is different, you don't need to do high keys to tank well, tanking baby content translates into harder content, there isn't that much to tanking unfortunately. This isn't true for healer though, you really have to practice harder content as a healer.

The group left due to insexperienced healer on the mega dungeon +8 and we had 9 minutes left to kill the last boss and all we had to do was tell the healer what to do but they didnt have time apparently. lol

I've been tanking in WoW since TBC expansion and its still best role for me but over all those years i gave up on that when Shadowlands came out due to toxicity and at some point i had to focus more on work and had less time to focus on the game. Eventually i realized that my main issue with tanking is that everybody in the group is always rushing and everything has to be done asap. When i was still tanking full time in Legion in my group we never had top gear but we had no issue pulling half of the dungeon on M+15 for as long as we went our own pace and we always finished the run in time but once someone started rushing everything went wrong and we wiped but since then pretty much everyone from my group who played WoW have quit and they dont come back. Btw we even took low item level friends to the dungeons to help gearing them and there were instances where they just got insta killed on the boss due to their low gear and i was finishing the boss solo for 15 minutes, happened quite a few times but we still had fun even then. WoW hasnt been the same since Shadowlands and i keep thinking that WoW needs hard reset. Its not that long since level and item level squish was done and soon they will be doing it again.

from a demon hunter player who is 3k m+ score, jumping in and then pressing immo isnt the best idea pref u have immo up before going in since its an active aoe on yourself and ideally you start the pull with a sigil of flame for good aoe aggro a dot and kicking off ur 2 set

I used to do dungeons as DPS to learn routes, mobs to skip etc.. then do them later as my tank, That worked for awhile. But coming back from Classic, i find it easier to just DPS. an let the tank do their thing, I have become a solo player now, just into the game for the story anymore

I main tanked for all of vanilla and TBC. I healed for all of Wrath/Cata then played whatever the guild lacked from then on. The community back then was more supportive of learning than it is now and maybe that was because we were all learning as we went. There were no open betas where raid strats and weakauras were pre-developed, dungeon routes pre-planned. Those things we're available for only the top few guilds in the world. Now however, with so many resources, there is so little room for learning from mistakes in the modern wow community. Same can be said for healing, two sides of the same coin. Patience has been sacrificed in favor of expedience.

Even worse: when theres too much talking in comms. Can’t hear myself think when theres more talk than required - which is none at all honestly if people know their class, their role, and know what to do.

I would like to tank, but haven't been into the current line-up available. Tanked a good while as prot, got AOTC on N'zoth, which is an absolutely insane fight for a tank-- so I'm confident I know what's up. Just got fed up with prot being all about stomping your feet like a child with a tantrum. Prot pally has too much magic, and I don't wanna be a DK, bear, DH or monk. Would have liked to see Survival hunter be a tank spec or enhancement shaman. I know a lot of people wanted to see a black dragonflight tank, but we got the evoker. It really comes down to the tank line-up being not very creative. They should look to other games for inspiration for the tank role.

Honestly the only reason I dont like tanking is because of routes (no time to commit to raids so can't speak to them). I dont know how or why but in sl I did some tanking to get ksm and it would happen at least once each week I would mess up the route and not have enough %, despite doing the exact same route, and have to go back which feels bad. Any other role I can kinda just turn my brain off and tag along and have fun.

I frequently tanked in SL and getting back into it after a long wow break. Everyone with even a mild amount of gear seems to want to micromanage your route and when you should pull big. The amount of wipes from when a dps decides that I can tank 2 more packs so he just pulls.... its... infuriating.... its not the tank role, its the entitlement of dps player.

The negative trope of tanking seems to be the main reason. Tanking this season was in reality extraordinarily easy imo. Dying before any of the DPS/healers is kinda difficult and in most dungeons there is literally no route, as there is only one way to play them. No tank spec requires any external healing atm and even most dps specs don't. And tanking in raid well...I'm sure people are afraid of that, but because of how incredibly boring and simple it is.

For me personally, it's the amount of dungeons and tactics for them you have to know to push keys, now I play mostly classic wotlk and there's literally three heroic dungeons that are somehow challenging (they aren't), but in retail there's tons of dungeons some from previous expansions and as a tank you have to know everything especially on a high keys. With mythic raids same problem. Yes, ICC heroic is challenging, but not even close to mythic raids. And you know what? I'm okay with that. I don't think it's okay to learn tactics for 30+ bosses(raid and dungeons included) every season just to have access to the endgame content and it's a minimum, also you have to be meta spec and class, have good rating and ilvl.

Back in wrath i played dps and when i swap to tank, i just did everything that would have made my dps life easier. Small things like turn mobs away so dps dont get parry. It wasnt even about breath or cleave. I made it so the dps life is easy cause i was a dps and knew this was a QoL for them. Ive never had a mindset of what if i fuck up. I dont get anxiety so it was very natural to just take charge and lead as tank. /shrug Im probably a minority but tank job is to make dps life easy. Not the other way around

The only reason I never play a tank is because most dungeons are a fucking labrynth and my sense of direction sucks. Navigating quests has been very streamlined, but navigating dungeons often isn't (although icons of where the bosses are helps). On top of that, everyone is always in a huge hurry to rush through, even without a mythic timer ticking, and a tank that doesn't know where to go upsets the whole group.

The hard part as tank are people who decline doing something like Interrupts and cc. my most hated people are healer who dont wanna play affixes like corporal or affliction because they cry its not there work here. EVERYONE IS THE FUCKING DUNGEON SHOULD DO AFFIXES, CC AND INTERRUPTS GOD DAMIT.

When i tank i look to play the simplest rotation having to press a mullion button is cool if your not actively having to dodge boss mechanics so my advice for new tanks is a simple rotations is your friend if you have to chose between a passive and an active skill always got for the passive its one less thing you have to warry about even if its worse then the active skill i see some many new tanks think thy are the super chad of the group only to fail because thy slip that one mechanic because there rotation gets to them and thy say fuck it thus is to hard and go back to dps so until you actually feel that tanking is easy for you makes things as easy for your self as possible even if your just playing a two button rotation

Before watching this video.. Why I think tanking is scary and totally for new players is due to having largest skill/game knowledge floor. Even during leveling dungeons people expect you to know the most optimal route and how the bosses and trash works. And probably the most punishing because your wrong pull or death will likely result in a wipe. Additionally, I think the fun factor plays a role which is mostly the reason for me not maining tank, I think tanking in raids is much more boring compared to m+ and open world content.

Main advice, dont take it bad if somebody say you dont know how to tank. Even veteran can make bs move and pulls. In s2 i mistakenly pressed my meld instead of my ignore pain. No need to say the key was lost after 5 minutes in the dungeon 😂. Take constructice criticism though, some people do make good remarks from time to time.

If a player wants to play tank and also for endgame then he is already discouraged while leveling up because as a tank he makes sure that he has agro and not the dps or healer so that everything goes smoothly but then he gets kicked because it is too slow for the dps and because of this this tank player loses the desire to keep tanking. Myself and my daughter stopped with tanking just because of this problem. People oly want to rush instances to get as fast as possible to max level

I tanked a lot on ffxiv through shadowbringers (from lvling dungeon to raids) and it’s amazing. Tried in wow and got flamed in less than 30 seconds of the dungeon started because I pulled something mythic plus addon didn’t point as a group to pull. I really dislike the umbilical cord of external programs (aka addons) just to know what is going on. And then I need to learn the right path for the right affix. And manage timers, and when to chain pull, meanwhile jhony dh is flaming you 24/7 on a +3… No thank you. I want to get fun too, it’s a game after all. Maybe in other games I can be a tank, but in wow it’s feels awkward at minimum

healing is hands down the worst in the whole damn game. tanking is the easiest thing in the game to get even remotely decent at imo. got most of my AOTC, when it actually was an achievement, by tanking my way thru it, as a keyboard turner i might add.

Never pug, ever. If you’re running high level keys without a guild or friend group you’re fucked. You know right away who the bad dps are due to their actions. Eat cleave damage, stand in shit, pull extra mobs to pump their parses are ruining the experience. I’ve been a prot warrior for a long time and I’ve seen it all.

I really enjoy tanking, probably in every mmo ive played. I enjoy holding threat, being the big dmg sponge. I dont play M+ and rarely do PUG things because modern mmo players are, largely, annoying little shits who want to speed run. This isnt just in WoW, its in almost every modern mmo. Eso, NW, starting to see it in SoD, ffxiv too though the people there are generally really nice haha so if you dont want to pull wall to wall, they dont mind. I prefer methodical take downs of mob packs and pulling just enough to keep the healer entertained. If the healer is having fun being active, chances are the dps is just pumping away too. The problem with modern mmos tanking, and speed running really comes down to the devs promoting systems that bring out the behavior in ppl that want to force a speed run. They add a difficulty like M+, which makes all levels under it too easy by way of balance. They five meek rewards for each dungeon, which pushes players to finish more and more as fast as possible. Quantity over Quality. Then the whole thing with Timers etc. Frantic gameplay, and punishment for failure, ie key drops in levels i think. So players get super mad at eachother when that happens. If leveling dungeons werent a face roll where the tank can speed run from boss to boss, and the dps just AoE everything down, then the expectation of that being the Norm would drift away.

It’s not scary it’s just boring after you figure it out and get a bit of gear. It used to require some skill, positioning, threat management. Maybe kiting etc if it got a bit hairy. Now you pull a bunch of mobs and press buttons that all cleave to every target in 360 degree radius, all generate massive threat, most tank specs become virtually immortal the more enemies attack them. Raid tactics are “taunt when boss does the thing until he does the thing again”, barely any add waves or anything interesting to do. Tanking is just straight boring let’s just have it right. Blizzard gave up.

I play tank heal dmg 20+ given me whole picture of everything. Yes tanking is scary cuz u dont know what pug can handle. Most pugs are overconfident and want bigger pulls. But when that happens/easiest thing in wow is to overpull sbove pugs capability ,it ends up with wipe cus noone go singular mode to take out 1 dangerous mob,all idiots AOE for dps meter muscle contest.
