Marcelo is so good because he trains with the best people and he has tremendous heart. He leaves his ego aside and just enjoys what he is doing. He is my favorite fighter. In my opinion his the pound for pound best Jiu Jitsu competitor to date.

I think both are good ways to train (as experience has shown) and each should find his own preference. But training both has also conditioning advantages, because in my opinion, no gi is way more exhausting due to it´s faster nature. What I don´t like is when BJJers put others down saying you have to train with a gi to become a technical fighter, that is wrong. But it´s true that it helps developing certain aspects of your game, as does no gi

Eddie Bravo is Eddie Bravo...if it works for him to not wear a Gi, and have those opinon's he has then so be it. Maybe the weed, got him to think that...kidding lol. Well everybody works and thinks differently. But I have yet to hear of one of his students...who not in their life trained without a gi, win a major major grappling event like ADCC or other major major grappling tourneys.

@RightWingCon81 That's understandable if most of the bbj practitioners train with the gi imo;/ I don't claim to be an expert, i'm just fond of mma in general, i practice boxing /thai bo mainly, but i think that it's like in boxing, when you put on those big glaves, with handwraps that maintain your wrists, you can punch from many more different angles, but the day you've got to fight bareknuckles you're going to break your hand because you don't mimic exactly what you'll be confronted with :/

@RightWingCon81 I agree traingin both is the way to go but Eddie does have a valid point and telling him to shove things in his ass is childish. Alot of Gi guys DONT work hard enough on clinching and staying tight and ti CAN but not always harm your no gi game. it's his opinion that gi trainign can have you focus away from that by focussing on pulling the gi rather than clinching. Thats his point. I'm sure in many peoples cases this is a fact andEddie does not imply that gi or no gi is superior.
@charlieapeshit
@charlieapeshit 13 жыл бұрын
@RightWingCon81 Read it. He talks about clinch work and staying tight and how Marcelo has amazing clinch work which makes his no gi game amazing and appreciates that. He feels alot of gi grapplers traingin gi focus and trains on yank/pulling the gi rather than clinching and staying tight which doesnt translat to no gi well, which is why he belevies only a few transition over well like Marcelo. Its a valid point by Eddie that alot of guys dont focus on clinch work and do have looser no gi games

@RightWingCon81 His no-gi attitude is hugley influenced on MMA where he has nothing but great arguments for why alot of BJJ fighters have hard times with wrestlers, ground and pound, and other aspects. Everyone has different opinions on gi vs no-gi. Maybe for Eddie and alot of his students it does make their No-gi game loose. This may be hard for you but people train and have different results doing different things... so no one should say anything against gi or else they're gay? You're a troll.
@RightWingCon81
@RightWingCon81 13 жыл бұрын
@charlieapeshit That isn't trolling as anyone who is familiar with BJJ knows about Eddie's BS comments. Now, as far as disgreeing on training methods, that's not what Eddie is doing, he dismisses an entire segment of BJJ, that's like saying to be a good baseball player one should never learn to hit a ball with a bat. Eddie kisses Marcelo's ass about his NO gi game, but shits on gi as a whole, read the article.

@maxhdz24 Oh, so EDDIE is saying all this garbage about Royler? Well, I think he's talking shit. I googled the shit out of that claim and found nothing at all. I doubt he's callign him out and if he has, he's probably done the Oscar De la Hoya thing. Remember when he would call out Tito Trinidad by offering Tito 5 million to his 20 million?Tito would say no and DLH could sit back and claim Tito was scared when he was actually smart. And the gi is ESSENTIAL for good BJJ. It's not just cool.
@RightWingCon81
@RightWingCon81 14 жыл бұрын
@maxhdz24 he doesn't just prefer it, he feels the gi is not needed and harms the game. He's wrong. All the top ADCC guys are all big gi players. Saluo, Marcelo, Jacare, Roger, etc. ALL play mostly gi. Do you know what a fluke is? Royler was passing Eddie's guard even tapping him at one point if you look at the video closely Eddie pulled off a quick and nice triangle and Royler got caught, fluke. Do that fight 100 times and it won't happen again. I doubt Royler refuses. Plus he's retired.

@open3rdeye like what eddie said. flexibility is part of the game of bjj. You can't be a Muay thai fighter without having a head kick in your arsenal. You can't be a boxer without knowing how to jab. Eddie's still is not for everyone but it is effective . Shinya aoki, Nick and nate diaz uses the rubber guard to their success.. Marcelo's X guard is not superior nor inferior to Eddie's rubber guard. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

But msot people you talk to, they'll say that those who train or have trained in gi, are more technical then those who jus train in no gi. I talked to this one guy who trained in gi all his life, and also those no gi. He said it's like a suit of armor, you take off the gi, your free. You wear the gi you feel confined; but it teaches you to be technical. You have to learn the basics, history, and foundation first as he said.

@desicuellar Half of what Bravo accomplished? Sure, I'd like to make some money on a bullshit reputation. I'd love to have fans and followers and groupies like you and have nothing to back it up. That would be GREAT! I'm sure if I tapped a Gracie I would seek to do it again to prove not to anyone else but ME that it was not a fluke.

@RightWingCon81 you should have respect. Eddie bravo doesn't force his opinion on anybody. its up to you to follow whoever you follow as inspiration. Much respect to the king of no gi marcelo garcie and also eddie bravo. You should aspire to accomplish half of what eddie bravo has. Go submit a gracie and then you can talk shit about bravo.

@maxhdz24 So what? JJ is the man, no doubt, and guess what, he trains the gi as much as anyone. Eddie went his own way and decided the gi is shit, well, that's why he beat Royler in a FLUKE while Royler was raping him then got destroyed the rest of the toruney and NEVER competed again. Eddie is shit, JJ is the man.

thats true if you train without gi you develop raw strength, marcelo garcia trains with gi not to develop raw strength rather to improve his technique, jiu jitsu is all about leverage and technique. Gi or No gi whenever you depend on raw strength it means your technique is lacking. Thats just opinion on the matter. have a good one:D

I know, look at Roger Gracie training most of his life with a Gi, but then I hear within like 6 months or so before ADCC in 2005, he starts to train without a Gi. I think if he went head first without a Gi I don't think he would be as technical as he is now. I mean the man submitted all his opponents in ADCC 2005, amongst some of the greatest grapplers out there.

Marcelo garcia is a genius. His methodology is simple and is centered upon always evolving, putting the ego aside while training - using it's driving energy in competitions, and even than with a tight leash. Everyone says he's the nicest guy ever! A true role-model.

the GI is what refines your technique in jiujitsu, it is what allows you to build the definition and fine tune skill to your technique it is what makes jiujitsu more than sport and technique but an art form the GI give jiujitsu beauty

I'm a Marcelo fan, but i think its funny that at his level he still doesn't tie his belt properly. you can see it in all of his videos, when he ties the knot he doesn't wrap both strands of the belt, only the outer one. oh well

You know why? Marcelo uses the GI. Eddie Bravo doesn't. You can only reach to a certain level with NO-GI. The GI....beautiful! You're grip also gets insane! It's a pain to train with GI but at the end...it all pays off!

i love the gi. the gi slows down the game .ppl hold on to it and that is where u have to use ur brain and think. and become a more technical and intelligent grappler instead relying on srength and srrambles to get position

Yes, that is not even an option... Bravo may be great for "foreign people" standards, but for Brazilians he is just average... He tapped Royler capitalizing on Royler's mistake. I would like to see he trying that again... I can't understand someone who do not teach BJJ with the gi, this is not Brazilian politics like he said, this is what BJJ is... Listen to what Garcia says: if you want to be really technical you have to practice with the gi. Bravo is on the wrong path, but, overall, I like him

. yeah eddie is full of crap.he learned with a gi at first, so i dont know how he came to his conclusions about why the gi is worthless. plus he got lucky against royler. 99 out of 100 times royler would rape him like he was doing up until he got cocky.
