I just became an instructor on March in Mexico and then I came home to Puerto Rico on April and I was denied opportunities (its male dominated here), I finally started building my website, went solo diving to a very shallow reef and took pictures, built a fb page, digital card, google ads and Airbnb and this summer I was extremely busy and even got to buy three tanks, 3 whole scuba kits, an I phone and a GoPro, etc… (since april) Also, I got a contract with a gap year school to give the DSD experience to their students. I’m a hair stylist since 12 years and now I do both and I love it. I don’t waste the money I earned on things other than scuba related.

Super Video and a lot of good Informations! I just started to work as an instructor two month ago, did my PADI IDC just before Covid hits us all and was waiting for more than a year to find a job and now im finally working in maldives. I also used the ti e to do the Crossover to SSI so i have a lot bigger range of Dive Centres where i can find a job and i really start loving teaching diving to my students. On top of you salary you can get a lot of Tips or some drinks at the Bar when you like talking to your students after your working time. Hopefully this pandemic will end soon that the Dive Industry can restart again all over the World! Thank you Marcel for this inforative Video and also for all Skill Circle Videos wich helps so many new Instructors during there IDCs. ✌🏼

Yes I should have also included tips and other benefits that students give you. I used to love taking my students out of dinner during and after the course. So much fun to meet so many people from around the world and many times they offered to pay also. Keep up the good work and more videos are coming! :)

Sounds like if you're making $20 an hour, you're lucky. That's not much, even if you're working 40 hours a week. Great if you're young and living a simple life, not going to pay a mortgage, car payment, child expenses, etc. For most people, this amounts to a side gig, self-paying hobby. Having said that, I almost took instructor training in my mid 20's, I should have, I would have worked for enough money to pay for beer, tacos, and a windowless shack near the beach on some island. I opted for a fairly successful business career, that has provided me with a very comfortable and fun life... however, 30 years later, I'm still second guessing that decision... beer, tacos and the beach are still my favorite things, lol!

It feels a bit scary, but I bring a lot of customer and business experience to any diving school that would hire me when I have my certifications so I hope my crazy plan will work out. Hoping for a mix job that is both administrative at the school and ofc also teaching.

A great video. After years I do a refresher and was shocked at the low cost of the course and some dives afterwards. If you can fill the courses and trips then sure it works. Here they are not. There are more divecenter than grains of sand on the beach. No matter how good someone is, there are just too many. And even if the cost of living is bearable for Europe, it should be around 3000 euros a month. In any case, it's not much when you consider that the job depends on your health. You do it for a certain amount of time somewhere at one of the most beautiful diving spots in the world and then jump off. Or you find a place where you're no longer underwater every day.

I have been thinking a lot about this. What do you think should be (not is but should) the salary of a diving Instructor (in terms of local legal minimum wage) by comparing it to an other high-risk activity like parachute or others ? Taking into account the amount of responsibility (you are responsible for your students' lives), the specialized Knowledge, the skills underwater that not everybody has, the skills as a specialized First Responder that every Divemaster should have. Would not it be a good idea to increase the standards to make instructor slightly more selective and have less people available for DSD factories ?
@MarcelVanDenBerg13 жыл бұрын
I believe a Diving Instructor Salary should be 3000 USD and upwards per month.

Scuba dive instructor is like any other job, it depends who you work for. Think about chef or barber, lots are earning very low money and others can earn tons of money. It's possible to earn 12k a month as a fix salary, again it depends who you work for. Obviously you need to work your way up there, but it is possible.

Hi Marcel, great and very informative video! Love diving since many years and i am also considering doing my instructor education soon. But the video gave me some thoughts now that u said that attidude is absolutly everything. More for example i am fine with earning less, but i am not the most extrovert superstar always positive and always joking person u told u actually need to be to accomplish this. Normally i am a bit introvert person. Maybe sometimes a bit quiet, but for sure i would try my very best to give customers the best day ever! i hope in my education I can grow with it and maybe get better and better the more i train. I mean nobody is perfect, right? Or do you think u either "have it" or not? Thanks a lot again and greetings from europe :)
@MarcelVanDenBerg1 Жыл бұрын
The more you have the better and successful you will be at it. But it doesn't mean that you have to be a super super star. If you are a bit more introverted, then you can shine with other abilities or even attract other people who are the same. But out of experience, the more outgoing you are the more success you will get in this industry. But that is also just my opinion... Also, I have seen people being very quiet at the beginning of their careers and because they keep interacting with their diving students they become more and more outgoing, funnier, etc. :) I hope it helps a bit and have a great day!

What about Thailand. What is avg income for instructor in Thailand? Busy season and slow season?
@twocolorsocks94372 жыл бұрын
Due to Covid as a Thai instructor there’s plenty of work since it’s mostly Thai tourists. I would saw low end can be around 25-30k baht. High season month like songkran or December and January, I know some of my colleagues who made 100k plus bath but that’s working everyday courses after courses and always big group. It all varies because it’s only commissioned based. You get big groups you get more money.

That's a shame! Sorry, man, but I stop watching your video after you offered to promote a snorkeling trips, jet ski and so on. Sorry again, but how about just to get a relevant salary for the dive instructor job? We are not an animation crew, we are dive professionals. And all of this extra sales rise down the quality. Scuba instructor is not a slave worker for a tourist industry.
@MarcelVanDenBerg13 жыл бұрын
Hi Maxim, thank you for your comment. You don't always have to promote snorkeling trips or other excursions, but if you want to work in certain areas or resorts that don't have many scuba diving students to teach then you can increase your income by promoting these excursions. Some resorts expect it from you and sometimes it is just an option. If you don't like to promote other activities besides diving then that is your choice :) No one is forcing you, it is just a tip to increase your income in more quiet areas. If it is part of your job at the resort and you don't like it, then just don't work there and find full-time dive instructing work somewhere else. Some people think it is fun to mix it up a bit, but up to you buddy. It was just an extra tip :) Best of success to you!
