March 2024 | First look on a selection of pipe tobacco blends i purchased based on recommendations

As i have done in previous first look videos i will show you a selection of fine pipe tobacco blends that i purchased from Germany based on recommendations by friends & subscribers.
A short description of each blend would show on your screen as i discuss that particular blend.

As you're appearently living in the UK you shall definetely lay hands on the tobaccos produced by Gawith&Goggart's. You''ll find some of the most amazing virgias amongst the selection. They produce two brands, their own name and the ones of Samual Gawith. As they don't ship directy to customers you have to go through a dealer. Blakemarbriars is providing them and also produces formidable pipes, in case you like the traditional English shapes. In addition Mike is very welcoming when getting to him through mail. Eventhough it appears as if Blakemar is a factory, each ans every pipe leaving is made by Mike.

When I started the pipe, I listened to what other KZbinrs were smoking in videos and noted Kendal Black Cherry on one particular video, so I tried it. I also made the mistake of trying a tin purely on the brand and series (Vauen Auenland Evening Mixture), and disliked both for the heavy chemical fruit smell and taste. Since I read lots of reviews before purchasing and haven't been disappointed since ☺️

I agree Matthew. One needs to do some asking & searching before you buy but that said we all have somewhat different opinions especially when it comes to taste so it can be the same blend with opposite opinions of like or dislike. Take the very same blend you mentioned the Kendal Black Cherry, I am not sure if it is the same as one I tried Gawith Hogagarth American black cherry which I found quite pleasant cherry aromatic. In the end of the day, experimenting is the best way to discover what you really like. One more thing never throw out a blend that you didn’t like first time, let it age and you never know you might be pleasantly surprised when you try it again.

Yes it is Todd😊 enjoy your selected blends which seem to be good quality. The Mallard seems to be a good pure Virginia judging by tobacco reviews and the solani a good VaPer. I might give them a try😊

Good evening Nathan. I just finished watching your discussing your selection of tobacco. Good selection indeed. The Salty Dogs is a high quality Virginia / Perique blend that i enjoy immensely with a glass of Caribbean Rum, the mild fruitiness of the blend pairs brilliantly with the spiciness of the Rum. I will wait for your review of that blend and light up a bowl with the same while watching you smoking it😊 I too tend to stock up and as you so rightly say, better to over stock then to run out especially so if prices exceed to a point that it might strain my tobacco budget. Top selection Nathan 👍The haymaker & st. bernard are among my daily smokes that i did notice at the time it was recommended to you by Mark. You would enjoy those 2 blends. I am waiting for my order of salty dogs that is as you say top quality plug tobacco that i smoked in the past. The Capstan blue is a very good quality Virginia & so is the Orlik regardless of the perique debate☺ What i need yet to try is the dark sea that i will want to try. I made an order from the USA to the UK and luckily it made it through customs without trouble 200g of tobacco for £36 including shipping!

Good 👍 you have been lucky. I don’t take that risk anymore as my orders unfortunately were stopped by customs every single time. That said some people told me that if you order from smaller US online tobacconist, less chance of it getting stopped.

Some really nice ones there. Capstan Blue, unquestionably, is my favorite Straight VA and I have smoked many. The flavors are so mellowing and celebrated that you do not want the bowl to end. I do have a pouch of Salty Dog but have yet to try it. Like you, I prefer variety, so my cellar is very wide versus deep. There are a handful of blends that I stock deeper though, Capstan being one. And my thinking or justification is totally in line with what you stated about the unknown future of tobaccos.

I live in the US and just got my first German tobacco, Old Ironsides by Dan Tobacco. It is probably the best pipe tobacco ive ever had. Im in love. Just smoked the last of it yesterday but good thing my order came in with more Dan's, but i got Bill Baileys Balkan Blend and Midnight Ride. Great video!

Very envious of you Over in Europe for one factor the prices as well as being able to walk into a brick and mortor tobacconist. Other than ordering online from Christchurch. Yap. Unfortunately prices for vape-juice and tobacco will only rise more and more. Even here in Germany I noticed that trend in the last 15 years. So I'm glad that I stocked quite a bit of my favorite blends. All the Samuel Gawith blends that I so much love are now even more expensive than the newly arrived tobaccos from the US, like Cornell&Diehl and G.L. Pease, which is just ridiculous. Gawith&Hoggarth told me, they had to raise the prices that much or else they would need to shut the production down. But I'm not sure if that's a good idea, since people will look for alternatives, or buy much less than before. We'll see how it goes😔

Very nice selection. I had all of them (except the Dark Sea) and i bought a second tin/pouch of everyone. The Haymaker, the Capstan and the Erinmore will not come back to my Tobacco Cellar. They are very good smokes but not a complete pleasure for my palate. The Dark Moor and the Night Owl (from the same series as the Dark Sea) are more to my delight. My biggest surprise in 2024 was the Peterson - University Flake….what a delicious smoke. Unfortunately not available in Germany anymore 😢 greetings from Germany Michael p.s. Thanks Michael for your feedback. The plus side to the huge tobacco blend variety available nowadays is that one can always find a blend to suit his own taste preferences. For me part of the pleasure is the exploring & sampling side of things, fine tuning as I go along😊

⁠​⁠@@TheVapingPiperSometimes i have the feeling it’s almost too much tobacco and not enough time to try them all….or most of them 😄 Luckily we’re still have a small but well functioning tobacco culture here and DTM, HU TOBACCO, T.A.K. and KOHLHASE & KOPP deliver a lot of excellently produced smokes in a big variety. I had a lot of trial and error for the last 5 years and i still count myself as a beginner. My cellar is full of new experiences 🙂

No, you can’t extract NETs from pipe blends. In order to extract it right you need whole tobacco leaf that were cured in a specific way so the leaf doesn’t dry out by the curing and retain all the sugars & natural oil’s & spices.

Ok😀 thanks for the heads up. Talking about Captain Black is the CB original any different as someone suggested it to me and he said he starts off his mornings with that blend. I wonder if black cherry & original are 2 different blends🤔
