The suggestion to raise mag to 1500 was a God send. Turned my frogspawn around from being closed to fully open in a matter of days. Thanks for the tip.

Hello. I just found your channel and I subscribe right the way. I have a question. I just starting to enter to this hobby and I got Red Sea LX200. What wave maker do you recommend for this tank and how many ?

Will low mag cause your hammers tentacles to go thin? I can’t find any info on why my hammers tentacles would be so thin. I have a frogspawn that’s doing great but for some reason my hammer is always looking ill.

March.. I don't think 1300 mag would do that. I don't consider myself an expert, just my opinion. Alot of salts come with mag that's at 1320. I was thinking you were going to say like 1200 or below. I think something else was at play.

Question, so my hammer and Frogspawn look like yours for low mag, however I tested with the red sea test kit for mag and I had 1800ppm for mag. I didn't dose anymore abc+ for a week and did a small water change and they are still receded. Could too much magnesium be an issue? My nitrates are 5ppm and phosphates are .02 using the hanna checkers. I used a turkey baster and blew on the heads to make sure there wasn't any detritus stuck in there bothering them and nothing came out. So I'm a bit loss as to why they are doing this now. I've never had the best time with any hammer coral. I had a wall hammer that was fine for 6 months then receded and bailed out. This hammer was fine until recently. I keep parameters stable.

So is the problem that your Mag is low? Or is the problem swinging your Mag really high then back down?

I think maybe the issue is the drop in magnesium vs the level you want it at. I keep mine around 1350-1400 consistently. I don’t think higher is a bad thing though.

An old but newly interesting way to screw up a reef tank: use Vibrant (now AKA Algaefix).
@t0l4nd2 жыл бұрын
Vibrant is just heterotrophic bacteria / algaefix is an actual algaecide. These products are nothing alike and if you know how to use them properly there is no issue.

hello mate - ive got a walling hammer that has never been that happy, 3/4 of it is hiding away. My magnesium is at 1250ish and im thinking about raising it to 1500 like you say. Is there any negatives to other corals by having high magnesium like that? Thanks alot
@reviewit79742 жыл бұрын
1500 isn't a problem. Just increase it slowly over time.
@danielporter44932 жыл бұрын
You can safely raise it 50ppm a day, even 100 shouldn't be an issue, I've done it and no one cared. Being too low is more harmful then raising it to fast, you want to bring the numberes in check fairly quick then fine tune it once your close. I'd say crank it to 1350-1400 or more within a few days, then slow down. @KrakenEggs

Can you talk about how vibrant affects corals? I've added Vibrant for a few weeks and it has caused my montis to look like crap. My hammers are open but also don't seem to like it and the duncan hasn't opened up fully in weeks. I've stopped dosing it for 2 weeks now but how long would it take for things to go back to normal?
@artistic_spaz37242 жыл бұрын
My hammer and frogspawn haven't been happy since I have dosed vibrant as well as a birds nest too!
@LightSearch2 жыл бұрын
Vibrant is not bacteria, it's a dangerous algaecide, the manufacturer can't be trusted. It's exactly the same compound as API Algaefix and at the same concentration. It stays in the tank for a long time and there's no known way to remove it other than water changes. It makes sps, especially plating and encrusting monties, extremely sensitive to minor KH variations and they bleach. If you want to continue Vibrant, bring KH down a bit and don't let it swing more than .3.
@ryanc97972 жыл бұрын
@@artistic_spaz3724 Are they back to normal now?
@ryanc97972 жыл бұрын
@@LightSearch I've stopped using it. I only tried it because a lot of people said it was good. I also see Fragbox carries it too so I thought I would give it a go
@artistic_spaz37242 жыл бұрын
@@ryanc9797 so I have been dosing it for a while now but i forgot i did a clemiclean treatment 4 days ago. The hammer and mushroom are doing better the frogspawn is still retracted and I think I might lose all 3 pieces of birdsnest (unless they grown back their tiny little polyps from the center?) So my issues are likely due to chemi clean and not vibrant at all (and if you are wondering...NOTHING is working to clear whatever is growing on my darn sand)

Are you absolutely sure no one ran GFO on that tank? I'd check po4 too
@TheVapSter2 жыл бұрын
You think GFO can do that? I run it and know alot of successful ppl that do. Granted I use to do not gfo and started a couple months ago due to p04 climbing. I now have it leveled out at 0.05. I think some people get in trouble when they run too much or have the flow through the reactor too high.

@@Sammy31Dee this proves that every tank is different. I have kept my po4 at 0.03 for over a year straight with much lps and never had a head melt. I also know many in the hobby personally and they keep p04 form hardly detectable to .2 and never had a head melt from p04. I believe it's the fast swings that get you not necessarily the number itself as long as it's detectable. This just been my mileage and what I personally see with tanks in my area. These tidbits are still good to know. Thanks
