Given that this as recorded in one take in the early 60's, the microphone placement is 2nd to none. Great piece of music.

Zal me altijd bij blijven.

A clever device used by RS-A to get SA bands to play the da capo...write it in!

Just for the benefit of non-salvationists there is great significance to the silver star. It is awarded to the mothers of officer cadets at the commissioning ceremony.

Given that this was (if I was taught right) RS-A's first [published] piece for the SA bands, might it have also been a personal tribute to his own mother? Just a thought.
@julianbright5542 жыл бұрын
@@jdsmusicuk sadly not correct, his first published march was Gladsome Morn, and I think his first published piece was Bethlehem Story both around 15 years prior to Silver Star being published.

This recording of Ray Steadman-Allen's March "Silver Star" is not from the International Staff Band's album "Brass Band Festival". This recording is from the ‘Marching to Glory’ album (see below), played by the Band of the National School of Music. The ISB is high-pitched. The Band of the National School of Music is low pitched. www.regalzonophone.com/Albums/Marching-to-Glory

Hi Patrick, the recording is taken from the 1999 compilation "The Bernard Adams Collection" of previous ISB recordings which definitely credits the ISB not the NSM. The two recordings are very similar (as is also the Hendon Band recording later) but there is at 3'00" a mis-pitch on the NSM recording (in the baritones) which is not on the ISB recording...
@johnbrookes88042 жыл бұрын
In am sure all Salvation Army bands had converted to low pitch by 1963.
@patrickmorris73152 жыл бұрын
@@johnbrookes8804 SA and non-SA brass band officials met in 1964 to discuss the change from high to low pitch. The officials included Bernard Adams, Dean Goffin and Eric Ball.

@@Devonscot This is definitely not the ISB. It was wrongly placed on the Bernard Adams collection CD [which was not an official release either by SP&S or the ISB] - it doesnt sound anything like the ISB from 1963, wrong pitch, wrong style, wrong sound, wrong tempo, even 'individual player sounds' not correct.

Generally , for R-Z label productions, it would be EMI Staff that would set up and record, it has been known for Bernard Adams though to over-rule what, where and how many placements of microphones were done. Personally for this track I have played the tune slower certainly at the start and aimed for a 'fuller' sound when personnel permit. It works better then both as a indoor peice or on the march.
