I've been coming back to this video for years. National Emblem is one of my favorite marches, and to hear these girls nail it, in a field setting, better than most ensembles can play it in a concert hall, is something I still can't wrap my head around. Their entire 6 to 5 marching segment is some of the best brass I've heard in marching band. Americans have alot of pride in their bands, but these girls could outplay anyone on the field, from coast to coast. They are marvelous!
Very nice performance by Seika Girls High School Band , especially the DM. I'm not sure if she's also a musician like the other bands' DM. I want to watch her play the musical instrument too.

It’s an interesting mix of instruments. There are a particularly large number of French horns, and we see bassoons and oboes. The latter certainly disprove the people who assert that double reed instruments are too fragile for marching! We can also admire the military precision of step and harmony, the key to winning multiple gold awards.

Yes, I was surprised to see bassoons and oboes in marching performances.

The issue isn't the fragility of the instruments so much as the danger involving marching with the reed.

Excellent (as always). The second performance is one of their best i have watched. High speed precision plus wonderful music (and a DM that sells it).

In first show I loved the return to Steve Melillo's "Storm World" for a closer. Amazingingly clean. The DM was fantastic check out her EYES!!! and big smile after every toss. Second DM also great! Where do they get these fantastic DM's? Some would like to compare Japanese bands like Seika to Drum Corps or American style HS shows. Really they are not alike. In All Japan show there is a limit (81?) number of players. NO PIT! most do not use any color guard. Bands must perform the obligatory "180" march around the floor and there is a 6.5 minute limit to the show length. The only possible area of like comparison is in total musicianship. In this category there is no country that can rival the Japanese HS bands . (Seika, Tamana, Narashino, Tokyo Univ. 2nd HS, Takigawa, Kwassui, Kumamoto etc..) When Seika came to USA in 2006 they won the show in San Diego and performed at the Fiesta Bowl. There they put forth a complete "American style" show complete with color guard, pit and drill! Show featured music from West Side Story and "American Salute'. So they can do it when the situation calls for it. When they do parades in Japan they march over 200 with two guards and many auxiliary units... and ,of course their "penquin".

I've been trying to find more info on that San Diego show from 2006, as it's the only competition I'm aware of where a Japanese HS band competed directly against American HS bands (and won...of course). I'd kill for a score recap of that show but I doubt one exists in the public sphere, though I do know they won that contest quite handily, winning best music, best visual, best GE, best guard AND best percussion.

I played in my junior high school band in the 60s and the high school band later. I played the trombone and I really enjoyed the band experience. All three of my kids played in the same high school band. My oldest son played the trombone and my daughter played the clarinet and my youngest son played the saxophone. All three have the same love for music that I do. When my son would practice on his trombone the cows would come up to the fence and stand there and stare at the house and I believe that they were wondering what are y'all doing to that poor cow in there? Anyway I spend a great deal of time on KZbin looking for the best high school bands and I always end up in Japan. Congratulations Japan for your success and for having the greatest bands that I have ever seen. It is so very easy to see how much dedication and hard work that these kids put into their bands. Just simply wonderful.
