The thing I remember most about the Kentucky go ahead basket at 2 seconds was the Duke response. They looked so confident when they went off the floor for that timeout. No heads down. No shaking heads in disbelief. It was all business and "okay, we need that one back." It's like they knew, just flat knew they were going to somehow someway get the win. I don't think I've ever before or since seen that kind of confidence in a situation like this.
@Phillip-xi2cq5 ай бұрын
You are flat wrong. Duke looked completely rejected after that shot. Their heads were down and their bench was demoralized. Laettner saved that team combined with the pass from Hill. They were defeated until that.

My dad passed away from cancer in 1988. He was diagnosed and told he was going to die and he passed away 6 days later. He was a graduate of Duke back in the '50s so we were all born into being die hard Duke basketball fans. He died never getting to see Duke win a national championship. But then they upset UNLV in '91 and went on to win it all for the first time. And then in '92 for the Kentucky game, I remember I was in college and I went over to watch it with my older brother who was at law school at the same university during that time. When Sean Woods hit that shot, I went outside and started smoking a cigarette, and I remember thinking about my dad and how much he would have loved to see them win a championship and I looked up into the night sky and said, "They had a good run, didn't they?" And I was upset about the loss, but was also genuinely content that we all, sans my Dad, finally got to see a Duke National Championship the previous year. And then I went back inside and the rest is history... EDIT: *sitting here balling my eyes out as I typed this and remembering that event that marked my life in such an incredible way.*

i love laettner bobby hurley, the whole duke gang from 1992, I was 14 years old and hung on every shot of the NCAA tournament in my hometown of chillicothe, oh 45601

Jalen Sugg's shot was not a win or lose situation, the game was tied. Therefore, Laettner's shot is much better because the game was on the line. The difficulty factor was much greater also. Had to accurately throw it, catch it, make the shot. There is no comparison, Laettner for the win!

Exactly. I watched both games (Duke/UK ‘92, & Zags/UCLA ‘21) live, and nothing has that magical feeling/utter euphoria like Duke/UK. Still the greatest game ever. Period

This was such a great time for college basketball. The names on the court... Laettner played for Timberwolves, my hometown. One of the best draft picks, a dbag, but he was good.

I'm not a Duke fan but I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes watching that play. Perhaps it's the nostalgia for how things used to be. As an experiment I asked all my friends and colleagues (close to my age) to name the best decade of their lives: they easily said the 1990s. Before internet, political divisiveness.

To this day that is still the greatest game, I've ever seen. And give credit where credit is due. The PASS was every bit as impressive as the SHOT. Kentucky committed a major defensive blunder there by not contesting the pass.

Agree. Pitino will go to his grave thinking "we should have guarded the inbounds pass."

The announcer yelling YES !, and then remaining quiet to enjoy the moment...was so perfect for the moment. Up there with some of the best sports calls ever. By saying one word, and realizing in an instant...to just let the fans enjoy the moment. You can wax poetic when the shock wears off🤯

Gotta love Elmore after Woods made his shot.." look it went in alright but it was a terrible shot!" Lol spot on
@speedracer553 жыл бұрын
lol you can always count on Len Elmore to be a wet blanket. 4.1 seconds left, throwing it up and hoping for a basket, a rebound or a foul is perfectly fine (and in fact you can see at least a couple Duke defenders ball-watching and letting their guys get rebounding position on them)

As a Duke fan, I was so happy with that win but even in the moment I was sad the game ended because it was one of the best match ups ever in college basketball. Both teams were so good and it was back and forth the whole way. I felt sorry for the KY players because they played a great game and truly deserved to win as much as Duke did. That may have been the Elite 8 but those were the two best teams in the tournament, it was the real national championship game because the winner of that game would go on to win it all.

Grant Hill to Christian Laettner and the two Maryland comebacks... Jason Williams. Duke basketball is holy.
@9Ballr3 жыл бұрын
"Coach Pitino, what's your defensive strategy on the final play of the greatest college basketball game ever played?" Pitino: Uh, we've decided not to guard Grant Hill taking the ball out of bounds at all, since this will make it much more difficult for him to get a good pass down court to Laettner. Once Laettner catches the ball, we've decided to back away and give him an open shot, because he's only 9 for 9 from the field and 10 for 10 from the free throw line, so it's very unlikely that he'll be able to hit the winning shot from the free throw line if we don't guard him.
