Defintely a preference. Some people like dark, some like the pingy sound of zild. I don't mind them, but I'm more of a Meinl than a zild or pastie

Assessing the quality of cymbals is pretty complicated. Whether an instrument sounds good or not depends 90% on who is playing it and in what context. It is an equal matter of technique, style and personal taste. Also consider the fact that the majority of today's “renowned” chopzilla drummers don't even know how to produce even a half-decent tone with their instruments; this is especially true in the case of cymbals.
