Great analysis, but don't let this beautiful piece of music overshadow the fact that we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold.

Same, while red war probably wasn't the BEST campaign, it was better than the first campaign of D1, but the music in the mission, really did set the mood for it, and experiencing it for the first time was amazing, same with the 1AU mission, and hearing battlestations playing as you walk onto the outside of the almighty with the sun burning you as you step out into cover to hide, and the whole shutting down the weapon, and escape part, and then hearing journey again but far more intense than the first, was the best moments of red war, the greatest parts, that I will always remember, even if I started playing during shadowkeep, it was, an experience, no words for me to describe how I felt about it

Red War was about you losing everything, and fighting to take it back. Being told you were nothing, having everything stripped from you, and clawing your way through insurmountable odds anyway to prove that you were more than what you were given, and would never be alone even in defeat. In game, when you reach the cliff and see another Cabal Ship heading towards the last city, I just sat down and watched the destruction. At that moment, we'd lost. The light was taken. The Vanguard were missing. Guardians were scattered. You don't know which of your friends in the tower survived.

During 2020 after Covid broke out, I was really getting into the Destiny lore and almost roleplaying as a guardian on a daily basis. On one day as I was playing the game, my father had a heart attack and that was the last day I saw him alive. He died in my arms. This song helped me process the grief from that. I couldn't play the game much longer after that, but for what it's worth, it really helped me emotionally.

Having listened to this hundreds of times now, this song has taken it's own meaning for me now. I've played Destiny 1 for nearly a thousand hours and made friends along the way. Unfortunately Destiny was the only thing that connected us and some of us had others things in life to do, so we drifted apart after the first game. Listening to this before, it held hope. And while it's still there, the hope isn't for things to remain the same. Rather, it's hope that one day I'll find that happiness I lost after realizing what would come after finishing the Destiny 2 campaign.

I've started playing D1 again in 2020 and I've met hundreds of people that instantly became top friends, but now I just get on and wait for those good times that I feel like will never come back, 2020 and half of 2021 was such a good time forr D1 it was so alive and filled with lots of players and groups of people, but now Its so sad to login and find one player on your roster when I used to get 2 pages usually, I don't know how to move on because this game means so much to me but its so sad seeing it die slowly, and seeing so many people who got on every day now just disappear, I wish this game was like WoW I wouldn't even have cared if the new content is bad I just want the original game, especially with destiny 2 being this soulless money grab, the passion is not there and the new stuff raids and events are just so boring, the last time D2 was good was shadowkeep before they vaulted the game and transfered it to a money making machine, I don't know how im gonna move on but at the same time I don't want to, I hope they do something with D1 because the only thing thats gonna revive it again is probably an another pandemic, but I know if they touch it its just gonna get ruined.

I think the best thing about this piece of music is that it portrays the Red War campaign perfectly, the feeling of waking up without the Light anymore, the feeling of hopelessness in losing to the Red Legion, then to regrouping with your Ghost to escape the last city and moving forward with a plan to fight back and take back the Traveler from the Ghaul and the Red Legion. And just to hear it at the end of the campaign in a sense of urgency and despair to save the Vanguard from almost getting killed by the Red Legion felt so epic. And that middle part too at 6:30 is just awesome because it reminds you of your past then cuts back to the reality of where you currently are

To me this song means the end of one journey and the beginning of a new one. It’s heartbreak that turns into hope. When Destiny 2 launched, I was the only one of my friends left playing. It came out as I moved into college and drifted from all of my old friends. For me the first part is the loss of the great friends I made during the first game, the second is the conviction to go through it on my own, and the third is the new realisation of my love for the game. I’ve had some low points with the game, but ever since the Destiny 1 beta I’ve loved every second; from the agony of the original Thorn quest to getting Mythoclast on my first try with an LFG team and being dead as Atheon fell. I love these games to death, as they’re two of the games that have shaped me, and I hope it never ends. (also please do Deep Stone Lullaby; I’ve not experienced it myself but I can’t think of anything akin to it)

It genuinely gives a feeling of loss, of pain, and sorrow. It plays after the moment we "the player" lost our capabilities to defend the last city. As it progresses we're on a journey to go forth and fight again, as we start following a bird, a falcon, symbolic enough to represent there's still hope and that we're not alone. OST from year one hits hard. I loved how you managed to describe the exact feelings of the music without even knowing a bigger context.

Great analysis as always, very on point. Golden age has ended through a catastrophe called The Collapse, and the remains of humanity come together in the Last City under the protection of immortal Guardians. Blessed by the Light of the Traveller, ancient god from before time, we defend the City from incarnations of Darkness itself, persevering through unimaginable odds. When you read the premise of Destiny it's fucking badass, man, and music complements that a lot. Rendition of this track by Game Music Collective is pretty great as well. There's more amazing music in Destiny too. Major recommendations would be Deep Stone Lullaby and Grasp of Avarice theme.

Perhaps my favorite Salvatori composition. Within the context of the plot and even outside of it. Gentle and somber, while at the same time emotional, human and powerful. The vocal crescendo is akin to both a prayer, a lament and at the same time a statement of command. The Latin is... not exactly right but the approximate translation would also reinforce that. Some of the lines are directly taken from famous Latin phrases and quotes, and quite a few have an imperative tone to it. "Perseverance from Fire, Light Defend Us, Light after darkness. Outside(Of it there is) bravery and faith, The die is cast, I struggle , I emerge, To life eternal. (this line is odd but probably means) Save our truth in memory? Light and Truth, Preserve the covenant, We are preparing for a life, A life in memory. For Equality shine, Life defend us, Persistence helps/guides/empowers the brave, Peace in virtue, fortune favors the bold/Stay your course(really hard to discern meaning from the way it is written) Let The Earth be your light, Peace be with you, For/in our memory." Something of the sort it is very hard to translate modern interpretations of Latin so a bit of contextual molding of the lyrics will always happen

It makes me so glad to see someone analyze Destiny's music. I personally fell in love with this song the moment it came on in the game and still am in awe now. The emotion that comes through the piece alone alongside the tragic context of losing a home seeing guardians, the protectors, now powerless and dying left such an impact. The song is mostly associated with that story for me, but the nature of the composition is applicable to much more. I love how it evolves from sorrow and loss in the beginning to a powerful melody of mourning and reconciliation, then begins to rise with the main theme in the trumpets, only to return to the emotional chorus and strings. To me this pattern says that even as you change, maybe rising from strife in order to triumph, you always return to what shaped you in the beginning. Whether that's hardship, nostalgia, or something else. It's all part of the story.

4:06 oh man. I remember when this part first kicked in during the last mission of the Red War campaign. The game would match you with other players--other Guardians--to assault the Cabal defenses. So you had to work together with complete strangers to get past this part of the mission. Knowing that the other players were hearing the same music and (maybe) feeling the same goosebumps you were--it was such a cool moment. Only thing that's come close since then was the final story mission from Season of the Lost. Good times, man

I agree with your description of this piece, it starts off with a sense of such profound loss, but then with others by your side, you pick each other up and find the courage to carry on, to start this journey anew, swearing bonds of brotherhood and fellowship to each other and inspiring each other to keep going, even when all seems lost, its all about, unironically, that meme phrase of the friends we made along the way, it presents a genuinely mature, almost Lord of the Rings kinda take on that, its all about people helping each other even in the darkest of times

I’ve been playing destiny since day 1 of destiny 1 and when I hear this song it makes me think of all the things I had done over so many years in the game and how many people I’ve connected with and lost touch with. It reminds me no matter how many people I meet and lose, there’s always a tomorrow to look forward to. No looking back anymore, only looking forward at the next thing ahead. It’s a beautiful track and can mean so much.

We're doing Destiny themes now?! GGs. Just from the first game alone, there are so many tracks you simply have to listen through. - The First Challenge - The Guardian - The Last Array - Sepiks Prime/Sepiks Redux - Cabal Stomp - Shadow Thief - Temple of Crota - Siege Dancers - Bow To No One - R E G I C I D E - Surge of Light - The Awoken - Rise of Iron - Eyes Up - Ad Victorium - The Wretched Eye - Young Wolf - Forged In Flame There are a LOT more but off the top of my head, these few immediately strike a chord

There's 3 (and a half sorta) times i've cried from playing Destiny 2/listening to it's OST. First from going back and listening to Journey after playing for many many years. Second from Cayde's death and third (and a half) from hearing Deep Stone Lullaby when doing the space walk after being stuck on Atraks for 6+ hours with my friends/clanmates on day 1 of The Deep Stone Crypt, the half comes from going back and listening to Deep Stone Lullaby because it gives a sense of nostalgia (just like Journey), even though it's still pretty new to the OST. Even though it's from a "bad" memory, i dont see it like that. No matter how many stupid changes Bungie does to Destiny, no matter how broken the game is, no matter how infuriating it can be to play it and no matter how dry the game can be and how burnt out i get from playing it, Destiny and it's music is art and always will be. It's going to be a piece of my heart and soul forever and i'll always end up coming back to it. Eyes up, Guardian.

There is a song by Regina Spektor called "The Call" that I think says explicity the emotions that Journey conveys. the song starts with: "It started out as a feeling, which then grew into a hope, which then turned into a quiet thought, which then turned into a quiet word. Then that word grew louder and louder, till it was a battle cry." its about how change is difficult but not something to be afraid of.

For me, the opening phrase of this track - the strings, the sorrowful, reflective nature - is exactly as you say. We just lost in the biggest way. Lost our Light, lost our City, lost our way. We lost our people and friends and our purpose. A silent god sat above us and did nothing in our weakest moment. We were scattered across the system, unsure of what would even come next. The second part, that part that kicks in on the mountainside as the Cabal ships fly overhead and you see the Traveler in it's cage in the distance, feels to me like a "You lost. What are you going to do about it?" moment. Yes, we lost. But we're still alive. We aren't going to allow ourselves to be downtrodden. We are going to rise together from the ashes of this defeat. We are united, we are strong. THere are people who depend on us and need us to be strong. Even in our weakest moment we remained strong. We didn't give up and lay down to die. We trekked for miles over mountain ranges and valleys. We fought Cabal patrols without our superpowers. Together, we will ascend from despair and find hope. The final part screams to me, "Not only will we rise, we will TAKE BACK what is ours. We will meet the Cabal head-on and reclaim our City. We will fight for what we built over the course of Destiny 1. Together." And then the choir joins in and I get another message from the track. It's like the people of the City, the refugees on the Farm, are joining in with our 'hero moment.' They are saying "We will support you and rise on our own. We are the People of the Last City, and together there is no force that can stop us. We don't have the Light, but we have strength of our own. We see you, Guardian, and we need you." And there's even a sense of other Guardians joining in, because in the lore it explores how Guardians remained in the City to save people and evacuate them. Lightless Guardians dying Final Deaths to save the innocent. The last two minutes of the track has this insane heroicism in it. Like a memorial to these fallen Guardians and the strength of Humanity's resolve. - And to me it applies to even normal people in the real world. There's a time after great tragedy or loss to sit down and reflect. To let yourself be affected by whatever events happened. A family member's death, a natural disaster destroying your home, a war arriving in your country. There's a time to gather together and just feel your emotions either alone or with those you trust. But then there's a moment where you need to look inward and ask the question "What am I going to do now? What can I do now? What would they want me to do?" and there's a real moment where you might not know. But you can look around at the people who care about you, and who you care about, and you can try to figure that out together. It's like in Frozen 2 with Anna's song "just do the next right thing." What's the next thing that feels right to you? There are people who might depend on you, who are maybe weaker than you are, or feel the loss more strongly. Maybe you're now responsible for someone's life (elder or younger). And they need you. It's a really personal message, and when I think about my Nana and how tragic her death was for us, I play this song. I listen to it in its entirety and I let these emotions and feelings flow through me. I don't think the pain will ever go away, but with songs like this it feels lessened. It's a good guide for me to follow to overcome the emotions and do the next right thing.

I never really expected you to react to Destiny music and when I saw this in my recommendation I was absolutely elated. As someone with 3000+ hours between both games, this track has always stood out (I honestly probably have 100+ hours of just listening to this song). There may be songs in the soundtrack that are better or that I like more but nothing has come close to the emotion and feels that this track provides. Thanks for the great review man, you've made my day.

I know other people have said it but it can not be understated, the context of being a destiny player when you first hear this. Holy shit. Having been your guardian, beating everything you've beaten, then having all that power ripped away. Forced to walk past dead guardians knowing you could be next and past your home in flames, i will never shake that feeling. Ever.

Oh, I was wondering when you would react do Destiny's music, they are so good; Well, keeping withing the theme of "emotinal space opera" I recomend "This it what you are" from Warframe (btw they also have gorgeous songs) and "Rosalina's Storybook Theme" from Super Mario Galaxy, both have such powerfull contexts where they are played just like Destiny's Journey, and of course these contexts are huge spoilers in their games. Anyways, I love your musical analysis.

I was encouraged to play Destiny 2 by some acquaintances originally. I still remember making my guardian, taking time to pick their design and look, and going through the opening quests / missions to get to the part where this song opens. I was taken aback given the fact the song plays as you, yourself, are on a journey, or at the very least, beginning a new one in some fashion or form. The chills this song gave me experiencing it for the first time in-game are no less diminished in any fashion hearing it here again, and seeing your reaction to it. Your guardian is on a path, whether or not they realize it in that moment is irrelevant, as their journey will take them absolutely to those horizons. Even if the world is different, or the battle is different, there's a goal that needs reaching. Great analysis and take on the song.

In the context of the game this song makes absolute sense, like you lost everything you and your comrades fought (part 1) for and have to walk on your own, without powers, weapons or anything (choir part), then you have to fight and stand against an army with what you have with you (the third part) and finally the song resolves with you surviving to fight another day.

I never played Destiny 1, but when D2 came to PC, I remember hearing this for the first time. The sense of vulnerability, tragedy, loss. I felt the intent of the devs wanting to drive home that player characters were immensely vulnerable during those first few missions in the Red War. I think what upset me most was when I found the destroyed camp outside the City walls, Guardians having been overrun by Cabal warriors and Warbeasts. I grieved for them, even though I knew they were just set dressing. The entire power fantasy was that Guardians were nigh-unstoppable and immortal, and to be desperately trying to survive with the little rinky-dink SMG I picked up from what could have been a comrade, I felt like death could come from anywhere. I wished I could have saved them. Then the transition hits and we're resolute, the song tells us not to give in to despair, that our Guardian is not alone, that even when gods fall, mankind will endure. One of my absolute favorite pieces of music, ever. I'm gonna go listen to it again.

Cayde gave up his light so that our light could shine ever brighter. With The Final Shape coming to a close, I found myself revisiting this piece. Destiny has indeed come far. The emotion Destiny's music elicits has never failed me. It always fits the story suitably, from the beginning and now to the end. This song has made me cry. And while The Final Shape may not have made me cry, it made me feel so incredibly sad for (what feels like) the end of Destiny.

I've been playing D2 for over 3 years but I have a tendency to not pay attention the music in games while I'm playing, until one song really resonates with me and I start scouring the internet to find all the soundtracks. I started listening to all of D2's Soundtracks about a year ago and Journey was always one that made me reminisce of the original story of D2 (The original campaign was removed). It's now one of my all time favourite Soundtrack from a game.

Funny that you mention climbing a mountain - part of the sequence where this piece plays has you doing _exactly that_ after you've escaped the destroyed City. The opening part actually involves you limping your way out of the destroyed city after losing your Light. You see other Guardians being executed, and you know full well you could be next. The only weapon you have is a heavily damaged pistol, much like the city which you were supposed to protect.
