In this episode I discuss Michael Ignatieff's view of Aurelius's Meditations and his despair of life. Ignatieff's book is called On Consolation.

I went to a funeral today. The difference is stark. This godly woman and former nurse died in amazing peace, which I've not heard of before. The author of Ecclesiastics seems to share the hopelessness and cynicism of the Roman emperor. "I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind" (Ecc 1:14).

Yeah they do seem to both emphasize the transience of all things. Ecclesiastes is one of my favourites!
