I've heard a number of different versions of this tune but this has to be one that stands out for me. It's difficult enough to play this fingerstyle, but to slap, absolutely amazing. I know there are many bassists that don't slap or don't like the technique and that's fine but I think that it's great when a player can show variety and creativity. Remember people there's always more than one way to do anything. Say what you want, Mr. Miller pays homage to Jaco for sure but in classic Marcus Miller style!

He's probably the ONLY one that pays homage to Jaco, or that we should even allow to try. Too many aspire to do what Jaco did, and, in the words of the great Pat Metheny, "they really need to just move on...let it go". Marcus is the exception.

A master writer, arranger and virtuoso. Hats off Marcus, you have taken Teen Town to a level Jaco would have applauded! We appreciate your gift of music for all of us to enjoy and as a bass player something to aspire to! Great post and audio - five stars! Wish I was there for this show...

His musicness is as big as is arms. Marcus Miller, what a man. My hero.
@Cookefan593 жыл бұрын
One of the most difficult things for anyone to do is to honestly express oneself. To really truthfully expose oneself. Marcus Miller has taken a beloved classic written by a fellow artist that he actually knew and not only honestly expressed his musical interpretation but also shows a deep respect and love for Jaco by addressing this tune at all. The way he plays is himself. Just as how Jaco played was himself. To those who feel it should only be played a certain way with a certain style really don’t have a clue about what music is. I feel sorry for them. In their misguided worship of style and narrow mindedness, they cut themselves off from experiencing the realizations of a different approach from another musical genius. Marcus showed so much love here for Jaco, his friend and hero, that it almost hurts to watch. It actually raised the hair on my head and bought tears to my eyes. What a master! As for Dean “Crazy Legs” Brown on guitar, he is also a master of his instrument 🎸 with a unique honest approach that may make some uncomfortable which is a PLUS. I’m happy to hear that he made people uncomfortable. It proves that he was honestly expressing himself which most people cannot handle. They cannot be honest so when someone else is, it makes them shudder. Good. I’ve met all of these musicians at that time and they were like a family. All are good honest people brought together by Marcus to make this magic at that time. Somewhere, Jaco smiling every time this video is enjoyed. He knows it’s the ultimate compliment and expression of love.

As bananas as that guitar solo was, you can still hear th crowd screaming underneath it all. Christ almighty from start to finish that was a tour-de-force of musicianship. I was in a band with a bass player used to Rave about Marcus Miller and I had never listened to a single thing the man had done that I had known of. The dude is just an absolute Phenom and I can see why anybody who has ever listened to this man playbase would go around and tell everyone they possibly could about just how unbelievable account is. I love listen to Marcus tell stories to another talents of his is that he is a phenomenal Storyteller as well, and at the time he was coming up with some of the legends that he has played with, you will never find a more concise compendium of musical stories. Bravo Marcos

If you play slap you usually build up a skin or bone callous from the abrasion. It's small, but it helps prevent pain to the thumb for stuff like this. If you mean for stamina reasons, take a look at people like Les Claypool and Victor Wooten, being able to play slap at the high level live

@greaterustreettheatregroup3965 жыл бұрын
Many Jaco fans really are just impressed with his overwhelming technique and locked in feel. If they don’t see MM’s re-imagining of the time as an exciting, highly creative tribute to JP, they really didn’t fully understand or appreciate Jaco. They should know that Jaco had various versions of teen town that he did in different live situations. Anyone who is stuck on the Heavy Weather version is missing it. Teen Town is about a young, fresh audacious approach to jazz. Each interpretation is SUPPOSED to be different. That’s the point.

I have to admit, when I saw this one's title I raised an eyebrow... for me, Jaco is sacred, and if it ever will be a Free Republic of Bassists its anthem will be Teen Town, "Ok, show me what you got, marcus" and clicked play prepared to worst. Well, the cat HAS GOT all it takes to play this and with flying colours! It even adacts so well to his particular tecnique, almost seems written for him. Hats off. (But Jaco is still Jaco) ;-)

Same. I love both artists, and knowing the song intimately, cringed at the idea of a slap version, but he makes it work. I mean, he is Marcus Miller, after all 😁. I think it suffers from some ‘jam overindulgence’ in the second half, though. 🤔
