This kind of pressure is real. It drove my little brother to depression and drugs. He died at 24. My family did nothing but put expectations of him making the NBA. Then when he didnt it put him in a spiral and he felt worthless. My family did the same thing to me with a different sport. I thought my Mom saying i had to "take her out of the hood" was a good thing. And motivated me. But it took away the ability to be a kid. I'm stressed out over things a kid shouldnt be worried about. Also, it puts a pressure on you that when things don't happen you don't feel valuable. And you feel like you let everybody down. Luckily I learned to live for a higher purpose and trauma from childhood I made peace with. We grew up very poor in the Midwest. I now make 6 figures and im doing alright. My only regret is i was too busy with my own life that I wasnt there for my little brother while he was at his worst. He died at 24 😕 But he's always a living reminder for me to cherish the ones that care about us and make the most out of the short time we have on Earth.

As a fellow black man, I say laziness. With that being said, my family lived right down the street from a crime infested area in Norfolk called Marshall Manor, so I want people to know I understand the black struggle, but I say laziness because so many black people want a hand out from the government. Single mothers get on welfare and spend those government checks on materialistic things instead of saving so they can move the family out. Another issue, we're not stopped by slavery, but democratic handouts put us in slavery. However, these single mothers have the freedom to go to the local community colleges that are affordable, transfer to the in state university, and get certified in their field of study. Also they can get their own business and be their own boss. Screw the laws made by democrats that prohibit those who receive welfare checks from working for themselves because selling drugs is a business and the cops don't stop it until black males are old enough to do time in prison. You will be surprised at how good people are living that receive welfare. They have laptops, iPads, big screen tvs, and food for days.

As Black folks we must understand there's more to being a Black Man than just some form of entertainment. Nothing wrong with pressure but too much will break some that don't make it. Just the pressure of taking care of your entire family is tremendous. My son is grown and is doing great and he's not an athlete or any type of entertainer. I loved sports growing up and was extremely talented but I didn't pursue it. I never put pressure on my son when he was growing up for sports. I told him sports is for fun and don't do it if you're not enjoying it. The only pressure I put on him was to use his intelligence and keep his academics strong and he did. I urged him to get his college payed for with his brains and he did, full academic scholarship. I told him the rest would take care of itself and I was correct as it has for him. He graduated college four years ago and he's very successful in his career. He didn't grow up poor but if he did there's more than one way of achieving success. For kids academics should be first.

You gave your kid something that people who grow up like Marcus probably aspire to do as a result of growing up the way they did. But your example is a rare case and exception to the norm for most people in these comments, they come from or connect to what Marcus has been through. Its sad and you are correct as to what things should be, the reality is its not...and congrats to you and your family...its a blessing to have had that ability and opportunity to raise in that way...especially as a black family! 💯🙏🏽

As a kid that grew up like him I get it 100%. Sneaking into the at night to get knives to keep undet my pillow. A little boy ready to kill or die to protect my mom and sisters. Being the oldest has a different weight to it. Having to resolve conflict and chase men away. It's a heavy load but someone had to carry it. I flipped out when I became a teenager. All that hurt from the things I didn't or couldn't talk about went into the streets. I was in pain and I was going to make the world feel it. I paid for it and finally had a turning point before I lost myself completely. Someone asked me why I was still alive. To know people want to see you dead is very sobering. I lived to tell the tale by the grace of God. To all the young men out there it will get better. Understand that no one is coming to save you. Stay in school, get a job and get out of the streets. They do not love you. Find a productive place to pour your anger out before it's too late. I want you to live and I want you to win. It's unfortunate that when parents are at war the children always catch strays. Peace.

I’m a child of harsh circumstances. My parents got divorced when I was around 5 because my dad was a severe alcoholic. My middle brother tried to kill himself multiple times because of said inherited alcoholic gene. He’s since gotten sober for the last 12ish years, but my father passed this past December, 6 days after I got engaged. My oldest brother took it very roughly, and ended up passing from multiple organ failure resulting from an undiagnosed preexisting condition 3 months later. I just want to say that you are worth the fight, you are worth the struggle, and you deserve every bit of happiness that comes your way. I’ve seen rock bottom. I’ve lived rock bottom. You have no idea what light can look like until you start that climb.

Until he retired blind in one eye. He admitted to my mom at 72. Alcohol will need with you memory he was forgetting everything took him to neurologist. Test can back normal. God not done with him. How can a grown ass nan tell a child that he needs to man up and stop acting his age? Sounds like some advice that he should have been listening to his damn self. This is the dumbest shit I've heard in a long time. Children should be allowed to be children and no, ,at age 12 he didn't have to stop being a child and go to work to make it for his moma. She was alive and living and taking care of and had been taking care of him . Even when he was in there crying and talking to his under-achieving ass brother. When he made it he was able to give back. I get tired of hearing how all these black athletes had to support the family from the age of twelve. Ask them who was working on the house or out buying groceries or paying the light bill or whatever bill in real time while they were at SCHOOL! I guess he had to jump in his whip and go to home Depot to pick up a door jam or groceries from Walmart when he was 13 and then head back to take that 2 period test before talking to his agent at lunch. His momma's life got better because it was her life and his got better because it was his life, not mine or anyone else's but their own lives. GOD blessed them.. I wish these athletes would just say thank you GOD, instead of I had to or I did! Give credit where credit is due.

I remember calling my dad telling him I was burnt out from playing ball and I didn’t want to anymore, I told him the pressure he places on me hinders my ability to focus and not be anxious while I play. He just dismissed and deflected that. That’s when I knew, it was time to hang ‘em up and do what I want to do with my life. Explore all the options and live for me. Best thing I could’ve done because I’m financially independent now. But still carry that weird weight of, if I stick with it, where would I be. Would I be more loved not only by family but maybe women? It’s a weird dynamic to grow up with this expectation of make the league or bust. Shoutout all of y’all who have dealt with that and took the reins over. I’ll never place that pressure on my kid, win or lose, that’s my kid, I’m proud. And my younger bro, hears that from me all the time. I want him to be greater than me. Go far and high. But if he stopped playing ball, he’s still my brother and I love him the same.

Us black folks "ARE NOT" all messed up, speak for yourself. What needs to happen is to stop having all these children in single parent households. One parent can't cover for the lack of the other. We need responsible mothers and fathers (two parent households) to raise these kids and keep them out of the streets.

I was like 4 and I gained some what of an understanding what it means to get murdered and as years go by you see exactly what kind of a toll it takes on the people around you.
