Studio One 4.1 - Tempo Ramps & Time-Linear vs Beat-Linear Timebase Settings

Just discovered this--thanks, Marcus. Makes it WAY easier to make more detailed manual tempo maps to songs, because it shifts the timeline to the tempo instead of shifting the tempo to the timeline. As a digital orchestrator this will save me loads of time doing tempo maps on all the rubati I have recorded with lead and solo instruments. Big thumbs up!

One aspect you didn't mention, Marcus, is when it would be most beneficial to or how we might use each of these different timebase settings, like with a for instance. Would you add that detail to the description? Thanks!

Hi Marcus - I use this in somewhat a different way for instance I add extra tempo "dots" in 1-2 measures which enables me to stretch and or speed up the section creating out of control chaos finally allowing me to regain control.

Russplight I never thought about using it that way to be honest! But, I guess you could - although I feel like the audio would be effected pretty negatively with that amount of timestretching... have you tried it?

Great again! I like the way you explain the functions. Would you consider doing one on the relation between Melodyne's tempo mapping and how to import it into Studio One?

I would! But in all honesty, the video would be 10 seconds long! LOL Essentially, in order to "import" any tempo mapping done via Melodyne into Studio One's Tempo Track - All you need to do is 'drag & drop' the audio event to the Studio One Tempo track - and that's it. It's imported.. Now having said that - I think it's worth pointing out that there is a specific workflow (a sequence of steps) that would need to be used in order to "generate" that Tempo Map using Melodyne. In my personal experience with Melodyne 4.1, for basic material with straight forward Time-Signature's it works amazingly well.. See this example below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5WWpICum6aKbMU But if you're working with complex material that involves multiple Time-Signatures and tempo changes, etc etc. It does require some editing, and in some cases (not all) I find this easier to do manually in Studio One, as opposed to using Melodyne. Sound sets and loops are great you don’t even have to play an instrument or have any talent whatsoever, really cool also the tempo options that were just added look kinda like ProTools sample and tick based options I have been using for years eventually when studio one steals all the good tech from every other daw it will be worth using more although I own SO4, Ableton (that’s where they stole the drag and drop workflow) and Logic but I’ll stick with Pro tools the industry standard even with all its bugs it’s still better than Studio one unless you’re a newbie or don’t ever wish to work in an professional studio

Great video as usual Marcus, could i ask that you do a demo video for this new 4.1 feature as from the release notes i'm struggling to see how this feature works. Its called Import Song Data from song template

That particular feature is an extension of the "Import Song Data" geature - take a look at this video to see how it works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4PXpmWwgMx4arM But to answer your question, in 4.1 - we can now import Song Data from our Studio One Song Templates Song Files. So if you've created some Song templates, you could navigate to the Song Templates Folder on your system, and Import Song Data from those templates. Hope this helps clear things up. :) Cheers, M
